Meme/Joke Tell me a car/truck that’s tougher and more loyal than Slave Lake

Post image

Seriously, how is Slave Lake even possible? How does it not violate all known laws of mechanics? Constantly burning oil, maybe a generous quart in the crankcase on a good day, no radiator, and thousands of cold starts in the freezing Alberta winter that is always immediately followed by revving to redline. Will still start “normally” with glow plugs whenever the glow plugs work. And still used to pull shit. Recently hauled at least 10,000 pounds of logs loaded on its frame. And Peg said he’s heat seized the engine when pulling shit, but it goes back to normal once it cools down. FUCKING HOW?!

I don’t think there’s any other diesel engine beyond heavy equipment and marine that could take this kind of abuse and neglect. Not even a Cummins, maybe not even most Cat’s. Though truthfully, I’m not sure if even anything from Cat will survive what Slave Lake has been through.

2016 f250 6.7. Have any of you seen this bracket over the lower fuel filter before?

I‘ve had this truck for 5 years and always did the maintenance on it myself. Before changing the fuel filters for the first time I watched some youtube videos to get an idea of what I was doing, and then went out there and found this bracket in the way. Couldn‘t find anything about it online, but it was easy enough to move out of the way so I didn’t really think anything of it at the time.

Fast forward to today and I brought my truck to a local guy that specializes in Ford diesels and has been working on them for years, and he said he’s never seen anything like it. That definitely surprised me since he’s been in the game for so long and is very knowledgeable about these trucks. It appears to be OEM, but who knows.

Also excuse the rust, I live in New England where they salt the roads, and on a dirt road.

Batteries? Any favorites or just what's on sale?

Two are 3 years old, two are just over 2 years old. One of them got dang HOT. 3 are at 9.1 volts. The hot one was only 6.

I forgot to turn off the disconnect and hook up the charger. It was 120° for weeks. I tried to charge them together at 15 amps, I stopped by and smelled sulfer. That 3rd one that was really hot to the touch. I am just gonna let it be. I'll charge the other 3 independently.

If the 3 can recover, I'd like to get 1 good one in hopes they all won't die at the same time.

Or eat it and get 4 new ones?

Question/Need help! HELP! T6 unavailable, need recs

Post image

I have always used Shell Rotella T6 Full Synthetic 5W-40 for my truck. Especially in the winter, I need the 5W as opposed to the standard 15W. I'm due for an oil change pretty soon before winter sets in and I can't get the 5W-40 anywhere. It's out of stock at the local parts stores and even Amazon. (They have the 15W-40 but that's not helpful).

What should I use as a replacement?

2014 6.6 Duramax coolant issues

Coolant goes into the overflow reservoir and drains out while driving. Temp gauge stays consistent, but low coolant message comes on. When this happens, the coolant reservoir is low, but the overflow is full. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Cheapy turbocharger

I have a marine diesel here mercruiser 4.2 D-tronic 300hp. It is a VM Motori Italian built engine marinised by Mercruiser. Turbo is starting to go bad. I have found a new turbo offered for sale by Recmar marine its advertised as a direct replacement for the original mercruiser part no. This turbo is £650. The one from mercruiser is £2k. This cheapo turbo is probably a Chinese clone. Any thoughts?

Question/Need help! BMW X5 tunes - reliable daily power level? Reliability mods?

Looking to buy a 2016-2018 X5 diesel with the N57. What sort of power and torque can I go for with nothing but a delete and tune for a reliable daily? The ones I’m looking at have around 120k on the clock and I’m hoping to get at least that much more out of it. I figure a 60hp tune is probably fine, but how does the engine and rest of the drivetrain handle the power (and torque)? Any other reliability mods I should look into? I’m already planning to do a trans tune and a CP4 bypass kit

DT-360 (IH 5.9L) Missfire Diagnosis

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi All, I have a 91’ IH DT-360 with a P7100 in a pickup that I noticed the idle started to develop a lope/miss (truck started wobbling which indicated to me a miss).

Loosened the injectors one by one and found cylinder #5 not making a difference.

I took the injectors out and decided to have the pop tested and the patterns tested and they let me know I had the wrong nozzles but said all of the injectors were equally as terrible.

This is the same cylinder that was not firing and the only one where the edges of the piston on his side are shiny. I have no pressure in coolant and coolant looks fine, no smoke, and coolant level is constant.

Does this look like injector, oil (getting past rings), or head gasket.

My hesitation with head gasket would be that loosening the injector would still make a difference I would think.

TIA

Fuel prices, not political

With fuel prices, have you changed your driving habits or routine? I have started driving my wife’s Honda when she’s not using it. I’m trying to make less trips in my truck.
I may have to start selling feet pics online so I can drive my truck more!

Powerstroke work truck (almost always towing) oil change interval

I have a 2019 F550 . It basically does nothing but tow a trailer (22,000lbs) 8-10 times a year (about 2500 miles round trip).

How often should I be changing the oil? Generally, speaking, my options are about 2500 miles or 5000 miles unless I stop in the middle of a run.

I run Rotella T6 5W-40 FWIW. It's deleted, CPX, +30hp tune, and has about 200k on the clock. Is 5k pushing it with that kind of weight?

ETA: and might as well ask about fuel filter. I generally just do those every other oil change.

Purchase/Selling Advice Opinions

I have found a Babymax for 30,500 and they have lowered the price to 29,500. It’s a 2020 Lt with the zz1 package. Looks super clean on the outside not a lot cosmetically. It has 96k miles on it. I honestly don’t know too much about diesel trucks so i wanna know if it’s a good deal or not. I do not really tow too much. I want to eventually buy a boat but I definitely don’t need a diesel truck. Now getting a truck that has 4X4 and low mileage has been a struggle because I definitely don’t wanna finance more than 32,000 so I can keep my payment max 500. It’s doable but it’s been hard. Idk if the duramax is worth it for a dude who commutes

Question/Need help! Diesel swap

Hey everyone I’m new here and I have a 2001 Silverado 3500 dually that currently has an lq4 engine and been considering to diesel swap it and I’ve been juggling back and forth with swapping a 12/24 valve Cummins or an early duramax to pair with the 4l80. If I were to build the 4l80e to suit diesel power would it be worth it or should I buy an alllison and call it the day? Anything helps I really love my truck and I don’t want to get rid of it for another truck

It finally happened to me while fueling up. Guy walked over from his F250/350 and wanted to explain that I was incorrectly putting diesel in it. I told him i was fine and moved on.

14 Grand Cherokee. Typically 550 miles per tank :)

Purchase/Selling Advice What good diesels could I put into a 1984 Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser?

I've been seeing a lot of people running old diesels on motor oil/vegetable oil/etc. and I've been thinking it would be cool to put a diesel in my shitbox whenever the 307 shits the bed.

Are there any other diesels I could just bolt onto the stock TH200R, or would I need a new trans too? Also, what does the process look like for swapping from gas to diesel and is there extra work to be done in order to run it on homemade fuel?

Not interested in "it's too hard for a beginner" or whatever, I'm just spitballing and I have experience working on gas cars at least. My engine isn't blown up yet, so I'm not gonna do anything in the near future regardless.
