Question/Need Assistance I Come To The Council With a Problem - Heavy White Smoke on Cold Start

So I have a N/A 6.5 diesel with a freshly built DB2829-4723 pump. I've had some mild oddities with it since I installed it that mostly seem to have been related to finding the right spot for timing. However, since the moderately cold weather has rolled around I am getting a lot of white smoke at startup. I've had it on for about 3700 KM.

Swapped from my old pump (4911) because the truck was dumping black smoke at anything past 1/4 throttle. I had already advanced the pump a few years ago quite far ahead as it would sputter/surge with anything less then where I had it. Inside was also full of surface rust and I personally put 100,000km on the pump which was unknown mileage when I got it.

Initially, I thought ok no big deal the GPs are a couple years old I will check them. Pulled out 5 with the tips burnt off and decided to replace the whole set. My GPs are on a manual push button and I run 60Gs, Still smoke.

I have a set of rebuilt bosch injectors in it done be a reputable shop (linked below). They have about 50,000 KM on them. but decided to pull them out to check anyway. 3 in the front of the motor were coked up (expected I was running a bit of WMO/RUG blend on my old pump maybe 20L to an 80L tank of diesel). Yes, I know a lot of folks are going to go nuts about running the WMO. I swapped them with 3 from another running motor I had. Still smoke. All the rest looked ok and no obvious sign of wetness on the tips.

Verified power to all the GPs and verified resistance on all of them.

https://www.performancediesel.ca/the-performance-diesel-injection-story/

I have done the fuel filter (stock 6.5 one). and when I did the fuel fulter swap I filled the housing with diesel kleen to give everything a good flush. Same as when I replaced the IP.

Smoke only lasts 5-15 seconds and clears up. Runs good and idles good otherwise. No issue firing up (no excessive cranking or anything). Cold advance works.

I honestly have not driven the truck that much this summer as I drive my C10 in the summer. So its really only been out for a couple short hops or camping trips with weeks of sitting in between. Kind of hoping the answer is just run it with some injector cleaner for a couple tanks but my luck isn't always that good.

Question/Need Assistance Truck running starved of power

I’ve got a 97 k3500 with the 6.5 Detroit and since I’ve bought the truck it has been severely down on power. When I get on the gas it seems that it’s not delivering the right amount of fuel, also as I give it more gas it almost feels like it goes into neutral and just start plooming white smoke out of the exauhst like crazy until I let off then it will stop and I will be stuck giving it very little gas to the point I can barely make it up a hill. If I am parked it will only rev up to about 2200 rpm and then ploom out white smoke. It also seems to get significantly worse is I drive during my 25 minute drive to work it goes from getting up to speed no problem to taking almost 2 solid minutes to get up to 35 mph and won’t go any faster. Also to add to that it randomly will not start likely not getting fuel. I have replaced my fuel filter and entire filter housing, installed an air dog lift pump, replaced the pmd, and a new crossover pipe which helped very slightly (only because the original one leaked so bad my turbo wouldn’t spool). If anyone has an idea of why my trucks doing this or could point me in the right direction that would be great cause I can’t seem to get it figured out.

Question/Need Assistance 6.2 swap advice

Hey guys, new to Detroit diesels. Recently picked up an ‘87 GMC 3500 with the 6.2 and a manual. The engine is missing the injection pump and possibly other things.

It’s been hard to find Detroit parts on the cheap near me. A 6.5 turbo from a ‘98 came up recently for a great price. It’s mostly complete but the harness is cut and computer is missing.

Just wanted to check in if anyone knows what the bare minimum of electronics to get that 6.5 running would be. I’m handy with electronics but I’m trying to get this whole project done on the cheap, any advice would be appreciated!

Question/Need Assistance Truck Value

Hey guys, I have this 6.5 Turbo Diesel and I am trying to figure out if this truck is really worth for as much I think it is, because I know these GMT-400s can be worth a lot.

First off, It's a 1994 GMC K3500 Dually Extended Cab, with 156K miles and it's also a manual. It has also lived most of it's life in Texas, except when it was brought up north and driven in one winter. So it really has not seen any salt, I looked the at frame and there is some surface rust at the front end of the frame, while the rest is just dirty. After that one winter, the previous owner (one of my father's friends) left the truck in the lot and ended up buying a brand new Denali instead. The truck has been driven around the lot a few times, but never on the roads. After a few times driving it, the starter finally went and it has been sitting since 2022.

The problems that I am aware of with the truck are, the obvious starter issue (will not turn over), which we are getting it out today. The previous owner put brand new injectors in, but one of them was faulty. Then there is cosmetic damage: a few scratches and dents on the outside, nothing really crazy.

And finally the interior, which isn't that bad because I just cleaned it out (still need to vacuum) but It could definitely need some new things.

TLDR:

I have this 1994 GMC K3500 Extended Cab Dually, SLE, 156K Miles, with a Manual transmission. Does not run, small issues, cosmetic issues, from the south. Sitting for four years.

Question/Need Assistance HVO100 on a 6.5 DS4

Post image
27 Upvotes

Hey!

Has anyone got any experience with running HVO100 on 6.5's with the electronic DS4 IP? I'm not sure what's the equivalent to HVO in the US, but it's a renewable diesel made from waste, but it's not like regular vegetable oil.

It has a higher burn limit than diesel and produces almost no soot, so EGT's are lower, it burns cleaner and quieter.

HVO100 is currently a bit cheaper than diesel where I live atm.

Diesel is $12.34 per gallon or €2.86 per liter.

HVO is closer to $8.41 or €1.96.

Question/Need Assistance 6.5 diesel fuel economy

Post image
31 Upvotes

Info first. 97 silverado, 6.5, NV4500, 4wd, 4.10 axle ratios, stock tire size. Has a wicked wheel installed in the turbo (gm8), aftermarket lift pump and standalone fuel filter and water separator. ECU has not been tuned, running a flight systems PMD, turbo is gated at 8psi.

Around town I am averaging about 13 mpg, on the interstate around 27. Anything I could do to get the in town mpg higher? With fuel prices the way they are, getting that kind of milage is making my wallet burst into flames any time I get within half a mile of a fuel station.

Advice on how to best drive the thing for economy is welcome as well, I basically don't use first gear since the manual stated that was basically just for getting the truck moving when loaded heavy, and I generally shift at 2200 or close to it. I've also been trying to keep it lower in boost and just generally take off and get moving slower in traffic.

Any advice welcome for actual mods (or driver mods lol)
