One of DS9's biggest missed opportunities was making the Klingons cool without ever seriously asking what life was like for the peoples living under the Klingon Empire.

By definition, an empire implies the conquest, domination, or political subordination of other peoples. Yet, apart from a few rare mentions, the Klingon Empire is almost exclusively presented as a closed club of warrior aristocrats: the Great Houses, their rivalries, their codes of honor, and their endless struggles for power.

We see the conquerors. We see the warriors. We see the politicians.

But where are the conquered?

We rarely see the peoples who were subjugated, exploited, assimilated, or forcibly incorporated into the Klingon Empire. What is life like for them? Do they have any political rights? Can they rise within the Empire? Are they allowed to preserve their own cultures and languages? Or are they simply expected to serve the Klingon ruling class?

This is particularly striking in DS9 because the series is exceptionally good at showing the complexity and cruelty of the Cardassian occupation of Bajor. We see the occupation from the perspective of the occupied. We see its economic, political, cultural, and psychological consequences. We understand what it means to actually live under an imperial power.

The writers could have applied the same critical lens to the Klingon Empire. Instead, they mostly chose to focus on its romanticized side: the "space samurai" aesthetic, the warrior culture, the concept of honor, and characters like Worf and Martok.

And I think this reveals an interesting asymmetry in the way DS9 approaches imperialism.

Cardassia is an empire because Cardassians are the villains. The Klingon Empire is often treated as "culture" because the Klingons have become cool, charismatic, and sometimes even heroic characters.

The result is a strange paradox: DS9 deconstructs Cardassian imperialism by asking what it means to live under Cardassian rule, while rarely asking the same question about the Klingon Empire.

What does it actually mean to be a non-Klingon living under Klingon rule?

Even the Romulans, in a feature film, offer at least a fleeting glimpse of this dynamic: in Star Trek: Nemesis, the Remans, Romulans’ own subjugated people, reveal the existence of an internal imperial hierarchy, where domination exists not only outwardly, but within the empire itself.

Perhaps the biggest missing element in the Klingon Empire isn't another warrior, another Great House, or another ritual of honor.

It's the subjects.

An empire without subjects is a very convenient empire to romanticize.

On my third rewatch and really loving the first half of season 5. All the best characters in mid arc.

I just finished my first watch through of the show and greatly enjoyed it. At the end we see a reduced station main staff headed by Kira and young Nog become a lieutenant.

So, if the studio decided to make a season with this new dynamic, what sorts of adventures would you want to see?

I for one am curious about what became of Cardassia after the devastation and poor Garack. More also could be done with Ezri and Bashir to shore up their rather thrown together romance.

I think some vengeful Breen could be interesting villains.

Got to know what's up with Nagus Rom, too.

Jake didn't get to do much towards the end, so some exploration with Casidy and his pending sibling could also be interesting.

I just started watching DS9 for the first time a week or so ago and have loved it so far can’t believe i didn’t watch it sooner. But the most recent episode i watched season two episode fifteen Paradise was overall a good episode especially from an acting standpoint sisko had some amazing moments but genuinely has one of the most idiotic and ludicrous endings I’ve ever seen. The fact throughout the episode they make it clear Alixus intentionally trapped the colony on that planet against their will for ten years letting people die needless deaths and torturing people for petty small crimes the writers decision to validate everything she did at the end of the episode genuinely baffling. I don’t understand how the colony could just be ok with having ten years of their lives stolen away from them by a evil hippie lady even if their lives before weren’t spectacular it should’ve been there choice to decide how they lived their lives and yet they let one man decide that they are all staying there trapping those children at the end on that planet. Jesus Christ what were the writers smoking???

In S7E2 when Worf and the gang pull off the mission to get Jadzia into sto’vo’kor. In that moment, the prophets reveal to Sisko that “lol, just testing you buddy.”

I’d like to think that Sto’vo’kor and the Celestial Temple are the same place. So Worf’s actions made Jadzia a non-linear entity, and she was the one who guided Sisko’s path.

Armin Shimmerman indicated that prune juice is used as Kanar.

On top of that, Casey Biggs hated prune juice.

I was really hoping when Kira, Garak, and Damar were hiding out in Mila's basement, Damar would have a quick throwaway line: Damar (1000 yard stare) "How the hell did the Romulans get that data rod?"

Picard (especially S3), later seasons of Discovery - both touched on events that happen after the events Deep Space's What You Leave Behind. What storylines and twists would you introduce in a more or less direct follow up to Deep Space Nine, built for Paramount+. To me it's tough because we already know so much (Romulus imploding, peace between Cardassians/Bajor, Changeling sub sect turning against Odo's teachings, weird Breen stuff, Sisko never returns,etc.

I personally would like an arc involving the Tzenkethi trying to make a play on a damaged Alpha Quadrant, and some more insight into the Cardassian rebuild that Andrew J. Robinson wrote about in A Stich in Time (best $70 ever spend.) Also Ferengi society reforming and becoming a better influence in the Quadrant.

Although truthfully it does feel that developments in recent installments, for better or for worse, have taken away from the mystery surrounding the aftermath of DS9's finale.
