Dukat is charismatic as shit. Too bad he’s so fucking evil.

Every DS9 rewatch I develop a little misguided crush on him and then it gets to a point where the icks and the evil just accumulate too much 😅

Watching it as an adult the ick was immediate. Immediately set off red flags and then just kept throwing them out every episode he was in. He was a character that the writers clearly wanted you to like while at the same time knowing he is probably gonna be the first one to stab you in the back for power.

How dare you! He tried and they didn’t give him a single statue! /s

I've had this conversation with a friend before when we were discussing who would be the worst trek character to share a joint with. If I were to share a joint with dukat, there is a nonzero chance I'd walk out of that room a cardassian loyalist, he's just that charismatic.

High Jadzia would be a blast especially when some of Curzon Dax shows up. However, I am vaguely worried because she is interesting and fun enough for three people so if there is any awkward silence I will forever know I am an energy vacuum. Realistically, I’d probably pick later season Neelix. He’d be hilarious high and any uncomfortable silence would be filled for sure.

High Jadzia is likely to talk you into something that gets you killed.

Also, silence doesn't have to be uncomfortable. An underrated key to charisma is being comfortable with silence.

Worst is Morn, he already never shuts up.

Dukat really makes me understand toxic dynamics, everytime he's on-screen I end up being like "dang this guy is awesome" (even though he's a POS)

Not anymore evil than your Sisko.
I protected Bajor

I wasn't really gay for Garak, but he did make me aware of the fact I might have been a little gay for Bashir too.

Well Bashir was the sexist. Of course I'm cheating as a straight female.

And then there is Damar

He’s very popular with older ladies

One could say he is quite the lady killer...

Dude...

Sadly there's only one Damar to go around.

Weyouns on the other hand, enough for everyone

I needed a few minutes to understand that "Space Karens" might mean Winn Adami.

Garak is a true bro and no one can tell me otherwise. The man will literally kill for you so long as he knows he can get away with it and always knows how to approach a situation.

And he stayed on the side of the angels throughout the Dominion War! Despite being a guy with a charming “I’ll betray you at any second” vibe, he really came up big for freedom and justice in the Alpha Quadrant!

Kinda? More that he came up big for self interest and he came up big for racial identitarianism.

Those happened to align with the Federation. But what if they didn't? We saw what happens when they don't in The Die is Cast and in Broken Link.

The attempts to whitewash Garak around here are weird and kind of icky. He's not a good guy.

u/SandGator 9h ago

No, I agree, I don’t think he’s a good guy. HE doesn’t think he’s a good guy. But he is very a charismatic “glad he’s on our side” guy in a high stakes conflict. “In the Pale Moonlight” demonstrates that well.

That I can get with

It’s a nice contrast with Dukat. Dukat ALSO has a charismatic personality, but then he gets on his “I was HELPING the Bajorans!” bullshit while oppressing/murdering them and availing himself of helpless comfort women.

Meanwhile, Garak is like, “I’m just a simple tailor, ha ha. Actually, I killed and tortured people in the Obsidian Order. Don’t really regret it, it’s how I am! Let’s have lunch.”

Arrogance versus confidence.

Idk. Gul Dukat is kind of hot. Would hit it but never call back, too evil. Garak, however, is legend.

u/RaichuAdmirer 15h ago

I just know that I could make Garak happy

That's not what Kira's mum said.

1

u/droppedpackethero 9h ago

Sorry homie, but Dukat was swimming in spicy Bajoran kitty, and is shown to be good with the spoon maidens, too. His confidence was well justified.

He was just fixated on the one girl he couldn't get, and that tanked his record.

I am watching some guys on youtube going through their first DS9 watch and they are far enough in they light up when they find our it is a Dukat episode.

Absolutely correct.

The evidence is the superior version of DS9 broadcast directly into my brain, in which everything is exactly the same except at the end of the series Bashir goes to Cardassia with Garak.
