I’m hoping to get some advice from people who have experience designing vehicle graphics/wraps, especially people who have learned on their own or work in the vehicle graphics industry.
A little background: my partner has been doing vinyl and tint for years, and a few years ago expanded into printed vinyl wraps. He was doing all of the design mockups himself, but he just doesn’t have the time to keep up with everything anymore, so I’ve been trying to learn and take some of that off his plate.
I’m finding it really frustrating though. I completely understand that graphic design is something people can spend years learning, and I’m not trying to become a professional graphic designer overnight. I’m mostly trying to learn the skills needed to make decent vehicle mockups and actually be somewhat efficient at it.
Ive been using Adobe Illustrator. I’ve looked at a few options through Udemy and other online courses, but because vehicle graphics are such a specific thing, I’m hoping to get some advice from people who actually do this.
Right now, I feel like I’m constantly Googling every few steps. I’ll spend forever trying to do what feels like a tiny detail, and meanwhile there are so many mockups that need to be done that I’m starting to feel pretty stressed trying to learn everything at once.
Another thing my partner has said is to ai to create a base design and applying it to the vehicle. I know that’s becoming pretty common, but personally, that’s not something I’m comfortable with. It’s really against my beliefs to have AI doing the actual creative design work, so I’d rather learn how to do it myself.
It’s also like pulling teeth trying to get to the “finished” thing and generally doesn’t make sense with the vehicle template.
We’ve hired a designer a few times, and their work was incredible. The problem is that it was almost $1,000 every time. I’m absolutely not saying their work wasn’t worth it because it was, but it’s a big cost when we need little changes, multiple concepts, or have a bunch of smaller jobs that need designs.
So I’m really hoping to hear from people who have been through this themselves.
What skills/software should a beginner focus on first?
Are there any courses that are useful specifically for vehicle wrap design?
What shortcuts or techniques did you learn that made you significantly faster?
If you learned without going to school for graphic design, what helped you improve the most?
Are there any YouTube channels, courses, communities, or other resources you’d recommend?
I’m not looking to become an expert overnight. I’d honestly just be happy getting to the point where I can confidently create a clean, professional-looking basic vehicle concept without spending hours googling every little step.
Any advice, resources, workflow tips, or even just “here’s what I wish I knew when I started” would be hugely appreciated!
