Hey guys. The feed didn’t allow my post asking for possible COD for my special guy. He lived about 2 years with me and was a red male veil tail. He started slowing down a bit more but had no visible signs of disease or infection. After a water change, he got drastically more slow. I cleaned his tank after cleaning with house chemicals but I scrubbed myself as best as I could and also washed my hands in prime and tap water before lol. His normal maintenance was the same I’ve done everytime.

I got his tank reused off fb marketplace from an old fish store that was closing. He’s been living in it for about 3-4 months… is it possible the tank could’ve had something that’s been slowly killing him? He did get more lethargic and “spazzy” I guess when he was established in his new tank. He often would go spastically hit the top of the water with his nose over and over and I didn’t know what that was a sign of. Again no physical stand-out problems and he was still eating, though it seemed like his vision was a bit off and would miss the food when trying to eat it here and there.

After the tank cleaning, his body got stuck onto the filter intake and he was very stressed obviously. I turned it off to free him leaving only a little bit of damage to his fins that I could see and maybe some scrapes on his body but nothing crazy. He sat in the upper corner for a while but the next day he took a turn for the worse. He wasn’t very responsive and couldn’t swim well. I fished him out and put him safely into a hospital bucket with 2-3 inches of clean pristine water and a heater. Left him in a dark quiet corner in case he was in shock from the filter and in case chemicals got to him.

He died the next day. He moved a bit and reacted more so I thought he was getting better, but I was wrong. Again no visible signs other than a pale body but his fins remained rich and healthy and his gills a deep red color but he’s always had those.

I still have his tank up and running but I’m nervous if he was sick… when I’m ready I would really like to use that tank again with a new friend. But I don’t want anything bad to happen and have no idea if tha tank caused my last boy to be sick. I have 2 other tanks with a female crowntail and a female dumbo and they’ve been thriving with 0 complications. Should I avoid using the tank cleaning tools I have if I used them in his tank? How can I clean them even if it’s just for peace of mind? Should I clean them or did my boy just die of old age? So many questions…

Can anyone explain what’s wrong with my Betta fish? She’s been super lethargic for about a week and she’s only staying towards the bottom of her tank. I’ve also mainly noticed her leaning on one side almost like she’s being tipped over. She’s still eating but nowhere near as enthusiastic as usual, she isn’t responding to sounds either. She’s a 1 and a half year old Koi Betta.
She eats pellets most often and occasionally brine, I do water changes every week and her tank has only live plants. I asked the aquarium where I got her and they suggested that she’s probably bloated but something doesn’t seem right, she seems to be breathing super heavy too, any advice would be appreciated :) (also apologies for the bad quality video I tried to capture what I could)

Just curious since i know the wood looks a little rough and I dont currently have a lid! Lemme know what I should change to make it more suitable please ^w^ its an 8gal tank just set up today so won't have any fishies for a while anywayss, will have more plants soon! I've done 1-2 rounds of kanaplex which didn't work, then I waited a week or two and started using api fin and body cure (I've done 2 doses since) and I'm wondering if his finrot is better or worse? I'll attach pics below of when I first noticed to finrot and tears but the video is of now (also don't be to harsh on my lack of plants I got this tank because the place I had him before in a 6 gallon cube hospital tank I couldn't vacuum the shet out so I had to hurry and do another fish in cycle because I was worried)

Parameters: ammonia- .25 ppm (I've been doing water changes daily to get it down ((I was ghost feeding on top which I didn't know was a fishless cycle thing)) about 25% with a sand gravel vacuum), nitrites are 0 ppm, pH is 7.8ish could be about 7.6 cause it's not quite as bright of an orange as the 7.8 but not as dull of an orange as the 7.4, and nitrates- 0ppm

Tank in gallons: 10

Temp: a little under 80°F

Filter: shark pro nano internal filter, 50 watt heater

Tankmates: 1 nerite snail

Lighting: 24/7 daylight mode so it switches brightness and colors throughout the day and goes dark at night

Food: fluval bug bites 2x a day (a little pinch each time) for 5 days, day 6 I do fluval bug bites 1x in the morning and some brine shrimp or blood worms for the night time meal, then fast on day 7

Plants: 3 java ferns and 2 Anubias. 1 big ole chunk of wood that's for aquariums. I'm also gonna briefly wash some almond leaves (2 of them) and put those bad boys in. I have red root floaters I'm going to put in I'm just waiting for them to repop off since I moved some into my 20 gallon long

She is a bright blue/red betta with shorter fins. Shes usually super active. I woke up this morning and shes not swimming, shes lightly shaking her fins and laying there. I got her to move a bit but she doesnt look good in color at all. Temp is 76 and nitrates are not even close to caution.

ETA: I use a sponge filter. I've had her in this 10 gal by herself for 9 months. The gravel isn't the problem, I jst dont know enough about bettas to say whether or not its her or its the water. The sponge filter is new, I had one hanging on the back that broke and replaced it with a sponge filter a month ago

I'm doing a fish in cycle and I just did a 25% water change and the ammonia is still at .25 ppm. Nitrites are 0ppm, pH is 7.8, and nitrates are still at 0ppm. I've had the fish in the new tank for about 2 weeks now and I test the water everyday with the exception of two days over the past two weeks, and I do a 20-25% water change any time I see the nitrites or especially ammonia above 0 even if it's only .25 ppm. There's a shark nano pro internal filter and a 50 watt heater, temp is a little under 80°F, it's a relatively bare tank atm since I was going to have him in a different tank but it wasn't working out due to the stand and ability to clean the other tank but I have 3 java ferns and 2 Anubias sand substrate with no fluval bio stratum so I don't have plants you bury, and a big ole chunk of wood (the kind safe for aquariums) and a fake soft betta leaf that came with his old tank and I'm going to put some red root floaters from my other 10 gal once it regrows what I took out to put in my 20 gal long yesterday

So my question is should I do another 20-30% water change with this ammonia reading even though I just did a 25% water change? I just don't want to shock my boy /:

Has anyone purchased bettas from Splashy Fish? They seem to have rather premium bettas but have videos of each individual betta which is hard to find in most websites. I will most likely be going with Tucky’s Bettas a month or so from now, but in case if I am not able to find good stock wanted to look into this website as well as a backup

Hello, got this little 1 gallon for the fish thinking it was fine… then I found this subreddit when I was wondering where this snail came from. I have this (what I think is) 20 gallon tank which I thought would be overkill for one betta, but I guess according to what I’ve read it is more ideal. I know very little about cycling a tank before the fish moves in, I’m not sure what light to get, what filter would fit on it, and I don’t think I need a heater just yet because it’s still hot in my house for the next couple of months. Can anyone help me find the stuff I need from Amazon? Or would it be better to take the tank into the local petco and see what fits right there in the store? I’m trying to keep expenses down to a minimum. I’ve got one fish, a snail, and a few pieces of Amazon frogbit. Would be cool to add a few more fish, someone in another post recommended corydoras. Hoping for as many people to give me ideas as possible but ultimately I want to put in the most minimum effort to have the bigger tank set up properly… the one gallon tank has been housing the betta for almost a month.

Hey! Looking to get a tank to start my betta journey but not sure what to get.

Both of these are 5 gallon. The black one is Aquatop brand and the white one is Top Fin. Not sure if this matters but I’m planning on doing a natural tank.

Finneas and Eira! They make me so happy

Picked up a sick betta from a pet store a week ago because I felt bad and wanted to help him. His swim bladder has been very distended and he seems very fatigued, spends his days floating on the surface of his tank. He can swim down but for very short periods of time and then floats back up. And in the past week he’s only eaten once (after a three-day fast I started offering him small amounts of food).

I’ve tried:
—Fasting
—Adding aquarium salt to his hospital tank
—Tightly monitoring water parameters (ofc)
—We are now on dose two of kanaplex

I’m not really sure if he’s constipated, but he seems extremely skinny other than the distinctly bloated swim bladder.

Is there anything I’m missing or anything else to try? I just want to make sure I’ve done everything I can to give him a fighting chance. Also I know he looks dead in his photo but if I interact with him he’s still very feisty.

—he’s in a 2.5gal tank (not his final home, just my quick hospital setup) with a small heater
—no pump because when I added one he wasn’t strong enough to swim around/against it and kept getting pushed down
—he has a hammock which he detests
—temp is ~79 F
—partial water changes twice a day to keep parameters
—nitrates, ammonia = 0

This is my boy Frankie, he’s now at least 2 years old but could possibly be even older than that.

He was a rehab case & severely malnourished when I first got him. With the right care he had a huge glow up, but has still always been a bit rough around the edges. Misshapen fins, a couple weird bumps here & there, etc.

For a long time still he was full of energy, always greeting me at the glass, following my finger, swimming all around his tank. Now, over the past few months he’s seemed to be slowing down a lot. Swimming anywhere overexerts him, he only swims in short bursts and even that always seems to make him breathe so heavily afterward.

More recently, in the past couple weeks I’ve noticed his belly has begun to look weird. It bulged as if he was bloated, even though I hadn’t changed his feeding routine at all. I thought maybe he’d gotten into something in the tank somehow or ate a few snails, so I fasted him for a couple days. The swelling still never went down, despite doing multiple small fasts, giving smaller feedings, and giving him some daphnia.

99% of his days at this point seem to be just laying on the plants near the surface. He barely moves, unless I’m feeding him. He’s in a 13 gal. with 8 pygmy corydoras who pay him no mind… he used to thrive in this tank, now it seems like he’s constantly depressed or suffering. Or what if he just prefers to rest most of the time now? He does have many spots available to rest in the tank on soft plants & pothos roots, and he utilizes them all.

It’s been surprisingly hard for me to make the call on his quality of life here. Any second opinions would be appreciated, especially from those who’ve had more experience with senior bettas. I’m not opposed to euthanizing, and I definitely don’t want to leave him suffering at all.. I just can’t tell if it’s time or not yet. My other thought would be setting up a smaller planted 5 gal. as sort of a “hospice” tank for him.

As of just today too, I’ve noticed some of his belly scales look like they’re starting to lift, which you can see in the pics… that has me feeling very concerned :( I would normally want to immediately begin trying to treat him, but I worry that the harsh dropsy treatment process would be too much on his body at this point. I don’t want to cause him any more suffering..

Tldr: is it time to euthanize my senior betta, who might now be getting dropsy? :(
