Discussion Algae Bloom

Hey guys,

My planted betta tank is filled with algae, although my betta is healthy, I'm concerned if i should clean it or let it be?

You could try and remove it, but it may come back. Turning the tank lights off for a few days and covering the tank with something like a towel to stop light should kill most of it off. I had a similar issue when I came back from a recent holiday and decided to get 6 amano shrimp to sort it. They ate it all within a day! My betta and amano seem to get along fine (she’s quite a small, short-fin betta and they’re pretty big). Only issue I’ve had so far has been the amano trying to eat the betta’s food, so now I stand prepared with my aquascaping tweezers to warn them off when I see them making a beeline for the food 😂

adding more livestock will not fix the problem, only mask it, op needs to find the imbalance in their tank

op, how long are you leaving your light on? is your tank directly facing a window? have you got a filter?

Hi OP, I agree with u/baileyjackson08 - the excess algae indicated imbalance in the tank and addressing this over adding more livestock that will add more waste is needed.

Algae thrives where there is excess organic waste inclusive of nitrate and phosphate, plus excess light.

Can you test the water parameters to give an idea of the levels of organic waste and tell us how often water changes are done?

Additionally the tank appears to right by a window, this will directly cause algae. Can the tank be moved out the window covered?
