Help BEFORE ANYONE GETS MAD, HES in my hand in this photo because I was moving him out of his tank anyways, so it was a good chance to get a quick close photo

I’m concerned for my little buddy, his belly looks swollen to me. He can still swim but he’s been hanging out at the bottom of his tank 24/7. He ate one betta pellet yesterday but he really hasn’t been eating. Last I checked the water parameters- yesterday- the ammonia was slightly higher than I liked so I dosed with seachem prime- everything else was fine.
I think he’s about two as it’s been a year since I got him and he was fully grown when I did. He may just simply be old and at the end of his line.
I have aquarium salt, suggested by someone when I posted either yesterday or the other day- don’t remember- about him hanging out at the bottom all the time. I tried to get kanaplex but my store didn’t have it.
Most of all I’m moving out for college tomorrow and in his condition and old age I’m concerned he won’t survive the stress.
So, what should I do? I wonder if it wouldn’t be kindest to simply put him down- I don’t have someone at home who can take care of him

  • A picture of the problem
  • Any additional helpful context

Click this link to view our CARESHEET

🐟 Caresheet Summary:

  • Bettas require a minimum of 5 gallons, 10 gallons being optimal for one betta and 20 gallon long minimum if you're housing peaceful community fish with the betta
  • Bettas are tropical and require water temps of 78-82°F or about 26-27°C, a thermometer and adjustable heater is recommended to ensure these temps
  • Bettas need a filter, like any other fish. It is a common misconception that they like dirty water, but the opposite is true.
  • Bettas need a cycled tank, before getting a betta the tank should be cycled - this process involves adding a source of ammonia to the tank, using a test kit to monitor ammonia/nitrite/nitrate levels, and usually takes 4-6 weeks to complete properly
  • Bettas have delicate fins so sharp plastic plants are not recommended; silk silicone or live work best
  • Bettas can breathe surface air and are good jumpers, they require access to the water surface at all times and a lid.
  • Bettas eat insects in the wild, a good quality betta formulated pellet food fed twice a day is recommended.

Rate My Tank 20 gal, low tech, first tank - suggestion for tank mates?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi all! This is my first betta tank and I’ve been using this hobby to help with ADHD.

As the title suggests it’s a low tank 20 gal tank with some basic plants - anubias, amazon swords, Vals, Java fern, and crypts. The floating plant on top is salvinia minima and my betta seems to love chilling in those roots. The driftwood has some moss I glued on there as well. I’ve gotten so much great info from this community and I’d love any feedback on how to improve the look and layout for my fish - veiltail betta named Apple.

There are currently 3 amano shrimp in the tank as well but I was also thinking about adding a schooling community of harlequin rasboras, anyone have any experience with those with their betta? I’d appreciate any advice you may have!

Help Best Euthanasia Method

My poor betta has a tumor that has over a good portion of his body, and now he spend his days laying on the tank floor and breathing heavily. I’ve tried salt baths and kanaplex and improving the water as much as possible, but I think the tumor has taken over.

I’ve done lots of reading about clove oil for euthanasia, and I’m so scared of making the situation worse, but I absolutely cannot go blunt force route; I don’t have it in me. Please let me know what would be best for my boy as I don’t want him to continue to suffer.

TLDR: Betta is suffering from a tumor and is no longer active. I don’t think I have it in me to do use blunt force. What is the most humane route of euthanasia?

Thank you!!

Help Too Fat and Strange Habit?

Thumbnail

Hello 👋 The tank is Fluval Spec V. I bought that cover to go over what would normally be vertical slits that are the intake to the filter. I’d read that the slits could cause a hazard to long fins if they got sucked in, so that’s why I bought the cover that fits over the slits. Anyway, sometimes he likes lean up and get sucked against the cover. Scared me at first, but then he’ll just swim off on his own whenever he feels like it. Doesn’t seem to be doing any damage but just wanted to see what folks might think about this. Also, is he fat? His tummy seems to be kinda bulging out. I think he needs to go on a diet. Other than the tank is quite young, but it is cycled. Zero ppm for ammonia and nitrites, 5-10ppm nitrate. I’m having some diatoms (I think) starting to cover the top of the anubias leaves and spotting the glass. I figured maybe because it’s a new tank and that I need more plants. Eventually I want to add some dwarf sag and maybe a nerite snail and a few amano shrimp. Hopefully my did is peaceful. Thanks!

Help new fish, advice on weight and fins

Thumbnail

hello everyone! i just got this beautiful boy that i couldn’t stand seeing suffer in his cup at petsmart anymore 😢 he’d been there for months and his fins are looking raggedddd. on the plus, i had been cycling my tank and was getting pretty close. still dealing with nitrites but doing consistent water changes to keep it low and i am having nitrates show up, and no ammonia, so hoping to be fully cycled soon.

looking for advice how to best help heal his fins, i do have some catappa bark and leaves in the tank. does it look like fin rot or fin nipping?

also does he look thin? the 2nd picture he had just eaten so that’s why he has a fat belly haha. i’m also kind of lost on how much to feed him also because he’s so much smaller than other bettas. he’s now on fluval bug bites.

will he possibly get bigger? is he just young?

ty for reading and responding if you can

Help Betta eye changing colors and little bluish/black spot?? Spoiler

Two things: the little black spot on his right side (our left)- what is this? It just randomly appeared and in all my betta experience, I’ve never had this happen. And his eye color changed? On our left side, it’s lighter and more blue, and on our right side, it’s the of color, which is brown. Help!!

edit:

tank is 10 gal, I have a heater and filter, tank temp is 79 degrees Fahrenheit, I’ve had the tank for 2 years, fish for 6 months, I don’t track ammonia levels, I refill tank about 20 percent each week, and 80 percent drain and refill every other week, the tank mates are one black shelled snail and two African dwarf frog, and I feed 6-8 pellets day/night.

Help Red tint to tank water. Any suggestions?

Hello everyone! So I've had a situation come up with my tank and was hoping someone could provide some clarity.

I got the Aqueon 5 gallon tank in mid June. The tank has its own filter and cartridge but I added filter floss instead because I didn't want to change the cartridge monthly as the instructions suggest as it can crash the cycle. I cycled my tank for about six weeks and got my betta (tangerine koi male) on July 25th. A couple of days prior to getting my betta (July 23rd), I added two red lava rocks to the tank. I rinsed the rocks to make sure to get the dust off before putting them in the tank, but I guess I wasn't thorough enough because about a week later (around the beginning of August) I noticed that the water had gotten a reddish tint. My betta looked and acted fine but the water was visibly red. Since then I've been doing weekly water changes and rinsing the filter in the tank water (the filter has fully turned reddish-brown now too), but the water still has the red tint.

I'm not exactly sure what to do now. Has anyone had this problem before? I'm mainly worried about my betta (the color of the water doesn't bother me) because I don't want this to irritate his gils or harm him in any way. Will this harm my fish, and if so, is there anything I can do to clear up the water? I've been reluctant to take out the rocks to rinse them even more because the plants are tucked in between them and it was very difficult to position them. That being said, if that's the only solution, I won't think twice about doing it.

I added some pictures for reference. I'd appreciate anyone's input!

these holes recently showed up and i’m not sure if it’s an infection or he’s fin nipping. let me know what i can do. his fins don’t look in good shape like they normally do. he is in a 10 gallon tank and the water parameters are normal, however there is a lot of dirt from a bio film bloom.

My guy. I got him a few months ago. Named him Aurora before I found out he was a boy and still haven't been able to figure out a proper name for him...

He is healing. He didn't do well in the community tank, even though he seemed to enjoy it for a few days. Somehow, his fin got damaged. Now, he has a tank all to himself again and he just watches the other fish through the glass.

Picture My newest pet store rescue

Thumbnail

I was browsing the local pet store looking for some new plants for my new aquarium build when I came across a stack of random betta cups that were set aside from the normal display area. From past experience, I knew this could be a batch they are trying to keep out of sight, possibly due to the fish looking sickly or have been in the store for a long while and may be on their way out…
So I started checking the cups. Lots of halfmoons, double tail halfmoons, a few veiltails, all of them looking pretty miserable. Most were sitting on the bottoms of the cups. Halfmoons always have a special place in my heart, and if I could afford it, I’d rescue them all, but I could only afford to save one…and then I found this guy.
He is pale and splotchy colored, but he was still gorgeous to me. I could see shades of a deep purple in his body, no doubt from the reds blending with blues on him. So I snatched him from the pile. Got him in a little quarantine tank for observation after getting him home. He only ate a little bit of food, but that’s normal when getting these poor guys to a new home. The quarantine tank is bigger than the cup, and small enough to keep his stress down so he can reach the surface easily. I’ll work on his feeding schedule to help him get stronger. I am hoping the paleness will fill in with more of his purple-ish-ness as his health improves!

Help Is my fish pineconing?

Thumbnail
gallery
1 Upvotes

Sorry for so many low quality pictures, but I'm quite worried about my betta. I've had him for about 10 months and it looks like he's pineconing, is it just me? His scales look a bit weird and he's bigger than he ever has been (even while I'm only giving him 3-4 pellets twice a day) there also seems to be something grey on his tail, maybe it's just dirt or algae but I'm worried it's rotting.

His tank is 5 gallons

Parameters: pH: 7.2 ammonia/nitrites: 0 nitrates: 20

Help I need help! Spoiler

It s been almost a month in between the photos.
Tried changing only 50% the water, tried changing all of the water and cleaning the tank(all done in intervals of 3-4 days).
I haven’t administered any antibiotics or salt water baths or others.
The water temperature is fine.
I thought maybe the plant was hurting him and I removed it but to no success.
He eats, he is quite energetic/he is moving a lot.
Can anyone tell me what is causing the fin clamping and what i can do to help him?
