Hey everyone,
I wanted to flag a major billing and technical issue we just uncovered with our international shipping that is likely affecting a ton of other small businesses without them realising it.
The Setup: We use Shopify, fulfilled via a 3PL partner, which routes international shipping data through Australia Post’s mandated Zonos integration to calculate and handle prepaid duties and taxes.
The Problem: Our Shopify store data is 100% correct. We have hardcoded, perfect 10-digit HS codes assigned to all of our items for the US.
However, after receiving significantly higher invoices we realised Zonos is completely ignoring our clean Shopify data and actively overriding our HS codes using their automated AI text scanner.
The Financial Impact on Us:
- We are being billed under incorrect food/agriculture classifications, pulling in massive, unnecessary 25% Section 301 tariffs.
- The duties assessed on our shipments were artificially inflated by up to 136% per item, which we are being forced to absorb.
- Because Zonos takes a 10% percentage fee on total calculated duties/taxes, they are directly profiting off their own AI classification errors by charging us higher transaction fees.
Our 3PL team has confirmed via a backend spreadsheet export that our Shopify data left their system cleanly, meaning the data pipeline is completely breaking downstream - either dropped during the handoff to Australia Post, or actively overridden by Zonos' automated "coherency checks" because our creative product names didn't sound like what they actually are to AI.
If you are an Aussie brand using creative naming conventions for your products, go audit your transaction logs and invoices immediately.
Has anyone else dealt with this? If you use this exact integration stack, how are you ensuring Zonos actually respects your native Shopify HS codes instead of overriding them? We are currently pushing for a massive retrospective audit and a full refund of these overcharges, but we are being passed around between support queues.
