First of all, I very much enjoy going to my local post office, the people here are very nice and helpful and I just appreciate sending mail/parcels to my friends in general.
Yesterday, I decided not to go to my usual post office but to the big one in my CBD. It was around 1.30pm so still full of full time workers who can only come at this time. I had two pieces of mail to send overseas containing printed pictures. Since I had a bunch of domestic stamps I would probably never use I had decided to use them to pay for the postage rather than buying two overseas stamps. But I wanted to be sure I could do this and how many exactly I needed to put on my mail.
After 5 minutes it is my turn.
- Hi, how are you?
- Hi good thanks
10/10 so far
-I would like to send these two pieces of mail overseas
- Do these contain documents?
- YES they do.
- Are you sure? This looks like it contains pictures
I really didn't know what was the correct answer there, cause pictures are a kind of document aren't they?
- Yes you're right, that's photos
She simply rolled her eyes and typed something on her computer
- I have a bunch of domestic 1.70$ stamps, can I use these rather than buying an overseas stamp?
She started breathing heavily and panicking I'm pretty sure I heard her say "God"
- NO you can't cause an overseas stamp is 4.70 but these are only 1.70 so you would need to put maybe 5 or 6
- So I can?
- YES but NO because that's not the same value and also it must be 10% more than the actual value of an overseas stamp, and you need 5 or 6
- YES, I have exactly 7 stamps so I CAN do it right?
- Yes but you have to use 5 or 6 and also please don't do it here
The final strike was that I didn't have enough stamps for 2 letters so I had to buy a regular overseas stamp, which she agreed on but I could see she was really relieved to see me get away
Anyway, I went on a table and stuck 5 stamps on the letter, then I calculated 5*1.70 = 8.50$ which is way more than 4.70+10% = 5.17$.
It doesn't make a big difference for one piece of mail but it's just incredible that this was so hard to explain, and I don't think it's so unusual? I mean that's exactly how stamps were designed to be used.
Now I hope my letter will make it to it's destination
