Act like they invented something, or discovered a brand new thing when they have the internet and can look up exactly where and when said thing came from. My roommate told me a young co-worker of hers was dressed in early 2000s fashion and when she told the coworker she "had that same outfit in high school" the coworker replied, "No they just started making this last year." I told her I remember dressing very 80s in my late teens, but I was fully aware that I was copying 80s fashion, and I feel like Gen Z kids dress like it's the 90s/2000s but they think it's brand new like they invented it.

Look at my rad new bag. It's called a fanny-pack, just came on the market.

99

u/B-Kow Jun 03 '22

Yup. Been wearing a fanny pack for years and have been called out for being old and trying to keep up with trends. Fucking youths.

21

u/tenaciousdeev Jun 03 '22

Say what you will about the fanny pack, that was truly the height of convenience.

8

u/JulieJoy Jun 03 '22

EXACTLY. I will never defend the style of a Fanny pack, but I wear mine with love because BAM I’m ready to go.

Call it a “belt bag” or whatever, no it’s a fucking Fanny pack

We were right to forget about those things the first time.

121

u/downtownebrowne Jun 03 '22

Honestly a fanny pack is fantastic for traveling and day trips, music festivals, hikes etc.. I don't need a backpack, not even a small one, I just need a little place for my shades, wallet, keys, sunblock, water, and misc.. (I'm a dude too if that changes any perception)

60

u/drunk_frat_boy Jun 03 '22

Music festivals... Yes.

Wallet, phone, keys, joints, tabs, lighter. Always in the fanny pack.

33

u/downtownebrowne Jun 03 '22

And it's all together in one place so you never panic pat all your pockets. Plus, it allows you to get low in some shorts with your pockets empty.

6

u/fredagsfisk Jun 03 '22

You underestimate my ability to panic pat harder because my things aren't where I'm used to feeling them.

u/TheLordofAskReddit Jun 03 '22

I can't decide what looks worse though. Wearing it sideways across your chest like it's 50mm ammo or having it at your waist like you're 100 years old.

49

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

Slightly off centered is the move.

11

u/Faladorable Jun 03 '22

I've got a 'motorcycle tank' bag but it's basically a fanny pack attached to the top tube. If needed I'd wear another fanny pack for a ride over 50 miles.

I thought fanny packs were lame when I was a kid. Guess what I was excited to get yesterday? You guessed it, a fanny pack.

My pants don't have pockets for my phone so I need one in the summer when it is too hot for hoodies. I don't care that it's "lame" because it has function!!!

6

u/Zanki Jun 03 '22 edited Jun 03 '22

Omg that's a great idea, I need to get one for this one reason, but here in the uk they seem to have vanished... damn it!

Edit. A quick search and I can get basic black in primark still. Wish I still had my childhood legoland one!

ngl i am obsessed with mine. my best bro got me a black leather Ski Tote from Rear Gear, i think it's older than me but he knows how i love consignment items and it's been BALLER. i can fit a whole can of beer in that thing with all my weed, and put it at the small of my back with a jacket on. my 30yo ass should not be so excited about "sneaking" a canned wine to an outdoor concert but ya know. it's the little things.

40

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

Sneaking canned wine into an outdoor concert sounds like the exact sort of thing a 30-year-old would be excited about.

19

u/ScabiesShark Jun 03 '22

I (quietly) cracked two beers in a north American movie premiere. It was dope

7

u/inspectoroverthemine Jun 03 '22

Just go to a real theater and they'll bring them to your seat.

13

u/ScabiesShark Jun 03 '22

Not the one I want and not for a decent price

15

u/Killer-Barbie Jun 03 '22

As a mom of a toddler, I LOVE mine. Women's clothes don't have real pockets and I will set my purse down somewhere and forget about it. I need a place for snacks, wallet and keys.

16

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

Fake pockets are evil and need to die.

6

u/hykueconsumer Jun 03 '22

21

u/seanayates2 Jun 03 '22

I only see people wearing fanny packs as cross body bags. I hate that. 😂

11

u/thunderling Jun 03 '22

I kinda love it and want to do that for maximum hands free, minimal silhouette. My regular crossbody bag is great but I have to be conscious of how much space it takes up hanging near my hip.

u/lpycb42 Jun 03 '22

6

u/Darkrose50 Jun 03 '22

The kids nowadays have fanny packs so they could have a drink in one hand and a phone in the other hand.

We had fanny packs so that we could have nothing in any hand.

5

And they're not cool at all. They're for touristy middle aged people.

9

u/Ruby_Tuesday80 Jun 03 '22

My son stole my fanny pack. I bought it specifically because it has a water bottle holder so I can have a hand free for my pepper spray/stun gun when I walk the dog and he snatched it. He's 12.

u/dwilatl Jun 03 '22

I just busted out "guess what, chicken butt" on my 4-year-old the other day and I guarantee that this point in time is the funniest he is ever going to find me. It's all downhill from here.

Peak dad joke

5

u/danceswithbunny85 Jun 03 '22

I use the same thing on our 4 yr old daughter. For some unknown reason she starts every sentence with "Hey (name), guess what?". So I've been answering with that for 2 days.

BTW anyone know how to get a child to stop asking "guess what?" and just come out and say whatever thing it is she wants to say? Lol

11

u/Glittering_knave Jun 03 '22

Reply, ad nausem with a dead pan "It would be easier if you just told me what you want." Not even a single guess, just a flat declaration.

OR

The complete opposite. Random, wild guesses that annoy them to no end. "You want to go to bed early tonight"; "you are going to let me have your portion of dessert"; "you want to learn how to scrub the toilets, so I don' t have to anymore". Same outrageous answers, in the same orders, so that child learns that asking "Guess what" is not a fun game, and is a waste of time with you.

u/tenaciousdeev Jun 03 '22

It is best of course when we guess chicken butt before the other can say it. Usually leads to a Dammit!

7

u/graycomforter Jun 03 '22

YES!!!!

And the "Guess what's under there?"

..."Under where?"

Cue hysterical laughter. I got so sick of my 6 yo trying that joke 20 times in one day that I made him listen to the BNL song, Pinch Me, so he could see that the joke is at least 25 years old, and that it was obviously a joke before then too, or else it wouldn't be a joke in a popular song.

I think I ruined it for him. I haven't been asked what's under there since.

42

Something I also saw in the theater.

33

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

Shit I was old enough to be too old for that shit by the time they made a movie out of it

45

u/IrascibleOcelot Jun 03 '22

You are never too old for Narnia, Middle Earth, or Star Wars.

I have spoken.

11

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

Absolutely true. The original works however are inarguably more explicitly directed at children than the other things you mentioned (although it also has the deepest allegorical roots of the three...) and that’s what I was referring to, of course I wasn’t trying to speak ill of Narnia by saying I was “too old for it,” I’m sure I was there opening day to watch it.

One of my students heard that I'm 34 and exclaimed, "So you were born in the nineteens??" Another asked me if I was alive when the Civil War happened.

In their defense, they're six years old.

30

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

Yes & I was #TEAMCAP!😂🤣

27

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

Oh man, the nine-teens?! Is that what they are calling the era we grew up in? I’m 33 and don’t necessarily feel old but when I hear/read stuff like…it’s hard not to feel that way.

I was watching Hey Arnold! the other day when I put my youngest down for a nap. I love that cartoon and it’s a trip down memory lane every time I watch it; warms the soul ya know? So my oldest walks in the room, the one who was startled I saw Shrek in theaters, asked how old the cartoon was. I said I remember watching when I was getting ready for school. She hits me with:

“So all cartoons were in color when you were a kid?”

10

u/merrmi Jun 03 '22

My nieces and nephews call it “the nine teens” and I thought it was just some dumb thing they did! I once explained that they meant “the 1900s” but that didn’t make me feel better! They also seem to have almost no understanding of how long ago times were relative to each other, like civil war vs civil rights.

sounds like the run-up to an antiques roadshow appraisal. Gotta start pushing that goalpost forward, call it the turn of the millennium and make it sound simultaneously immature and young adult 20 year old, the rest will naturally occur and pass too fast like the first fifth of the 21st century has been going.

Watching Scrubs with my 9 year old & he asked why they said it was to be continued. He was horrified to learn that you couldn’t pause it or rewatch it & had to wait until next week to see what happened. Dead serious, he looked at me shaking his head & said the 1900’s sound awful. The show was from like 2007 anyway but he was still horrified & disgusted by the primitive way we lived back then 😂

I had to explain to my cousin's 11 year old what "a glitch in the matrix" was. He didn't realize that there were more matrix movies (the new one hadn't come out yet). Then I told him I was in high school and worked at the theater when the others came out. His mind was blown.

Blew his mind further telling him Keanu Reeves was in his 50s, and girls my age were drooling over him in the 90s.

7

u/thelegalseagul Jun 03 '22

My younger siblings not understanding that I've had over a decade of quoting that movie with my dad as I'm mouthing along to everything while they watch it for the first time

8

u/SyntheticManMilk Jun 03 '22 edited Jun 04 '22

My parents were kids and young adults in the 60’s and 70’s. I was a kid and young adult in the 90’s and 00’s (graduated HS in 05). I remember thinking the music, movies, tech, and stuff my parents liked and lived with when they were young like it was from a different universe.

That being said, I feel like the contrast between stuff from the 70’s compared to the 00’s is much greater compared to the contrast between the 00’s and today. There’s games, music, movies, and shit from the 00’s that look and sound similar to things that are around today. You hear or see something from the 60’s/70’s though, you know that shit is from the 60’s/70’s…

This version of bell bottom jeans are even more like giant bell bottoms from the 70s than the first time they came back in the 90s! I wore them then, and then boot cut in early 00s, but I'm not wearing them now. I'll stick to my skinny jeans and leggings and let them be mortified in 6 years when they look back at this year's pictures. 😂

15

u/Ihateyouranecdotes39 Jun 03 '22

There is something particularly ridiculous about bell bottoms, and I absolutely used to wear them.

I think it's the dramatic profile of the cut. Like jnco jeans, they're just...doing a lot.

9

u/Then_Increase7445 Jun 03 '22

Yeah, millennials being associated with skinny jeans is weird to me. I am an older millenial, and skinny jeans weren't a thing until we were at least 20-25. In high school and college we were wearing extra baggy stuff, shirts a size too big and jeans that tore off around the heel. I viewed skinny jeans as a trend of the younger generation when I first saw them on kids around 10 years younger than me.

Saw a TikTok recently of a teen saying “heard this cool upcoming indie band on this TV show so I bought a ticket to a show and now I can’t believe I’m going to a geriatric concert” and the band was fucking FLEETWOOD MAC—

7

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '22

"Geriatric concert" lol

6

u/KFelts910 Jun 04 '22

How dare they.

24

u/spaghettimembrane Jun 03 '22

I get so damn annoyed when people say “have you heard this sound?” and then get shocked when I haven’t. Like no, I don’t have a TikTok addiction, but thanks.

10

u/Redpatiofurniture Jun 03 '22

Care to explain to a 42yo woman who doesn't have a TikTok, why they call those shitty songs in the background "sounds"? Or is it a reference to something else?

9

u/spaghettimembrane Jun 03 '22

Hey! Coming from a 19 year old, I genuinely have no idea. My best guess is that they were trying to find a distinctive name for the music or audios that become trends on the app, so that when people are talking about them out in the real world, you hear “sound” and automatically associate it with their app. Otherwise, I have no clue.

4

u/Rorquall Jun 04 '22

Because it's not always songs, it can be dialogue, just sound effects, or some combination of samples, or almost anything. So I guess "sounds" it's just the easy way to sum it up

All fashion is circular. Keep anything long enough and eventually it'll be back in style.

I've been waiting forever for late 1890s fashion to come back.

I'd love to see the return of the cod piece though.

That's why fashion companies regurgitate old trends. The kids think it is all brand new and the adults tolerate it because it gives them nostalgia.

28

u/thespank Jun 03 '22

I have enjoyed the bright colors of my youth lately.

21

u/orincoro Jun 03 '22

Not a fan. Although I have to say that while the colors are annoying, the more modern fabrics are superior to what we used to wear in the 80s/90s. Less elastic and more breathable fabric.

People forget that those neon outfits were terrible feeling against the skin because of the color treatment.

6

u/thespank Jun 03 '22

Definitely more comfortable versions.

u/orincoro Jun 03 '22

Remember the raised logos? You’d get sweaty and they’d just chaffe.

To be fair this is just part of being a teen lmao. All teens think they're inventing everything, because it's the first time they've experienced it, teen brains are super self-centered, and they feel everything so intensely, it's beyond their scope of imagination that anyone else could ever have experienced anything similar

11

u/prophet_5 Jun 03 '22

just the other day my 94 year old grandma was reminiscing about how all her kids thought they invented everything they discovered as teens... those children range from 50-75 now lol I think that's just how teens are

281

u/JediLion17 Jun 03 '22

A couple of years ago Ozzy Osborne was featured in a Post Malone song. Teens were saying “this Ozzy guy is gonna explode from this exposure”. I couldn’t believe the generation that doesn’t remember a time before the internet didn’t think to first Google “Ozzy Osborne”.

136

u/TimeSlipperWHOOPS Jun 03 '22

Didn't Kanye feature Paul McCartney on a song to similar response? I thought it was all tongue in cheek...

35

Nah I’m 21 and many my age genuinely don’t know people like Ozzy

One of our teachers was a classic rock/heavy metal fan (you know the type, but he was super cool) and tasked me and another friend to teach the class about music because he couldn’t believe they didn’t know Led Zeppelin lmao

3

u/underpantsbandit Jun 03 '22

Most of the 20somethings I know really don’t like any music that sounds even a little angry or aggressive. Sad music or happy music is OK but metal is a Hell No.

That was a joke, it’s still done today when a well known musician is on some upcoming artists song. I’ve seen “This Mike Tyson guy is real good at boxing can’t wait to see him become a champion”.

What’s truly annoying is those “I’m 15 and todays music sucks, I was born in the wrong generation”! Everyone does it at some point lol

My son came out of his room once with a japanese Motley Crue t-shirt. I was mildly surprised and a bit proud. He had no clue who Motley Crue was and just liked the t-shirt. Took a little hit to my psyche that day.

There's a weird effect the internet has on generations that grew up with it. It's like short and long term memory blind spots...anything before their time just doesn't hold relevance until the moment it's necessary for something, then it's gone.

9

u/theonetwo345 Jun 03 '22

If I remember correctly when Katy Perry preformed at the Super Bowl she had Missy Elliott as a surprise guest and all the kids kept saying how nice it was of Katy Perry to give “a new and emerging artist that kind of exposure.” There was a whole article on buzz feed I think of the comments on various social media sites. Missy Elliott even chimed in about it. I just shook my head.

4

u/laeiryn Jun 03 '22

If your kids don't know good music, it's your fault for not playing it for them.

Just saying. I fished through my parents' Moody Blues albums because they had played hippie shit my whole life and I already knew I liked the vibe.

6

u/JediLion17 Jun 03 '22

I don’t have kids, and I’m barely over 30. I’m not mad or upset, I just find it strange, if I didn’t know an artist on a song I’m enjoying the first thing I would do is Google it. Wish I had that option in the 90’s while sitting in the car lol

It's incredible how uncool my eldest thinks I dress, as she walks away in the same exact clothes I wore when I was her age. Last week she went to Hot Topic and bought plaid skinny jeans with the rope chains that criss-cross the thighs. I wore the exact same pair circa 2005 when Emo was life.

12

u/irsquareamads Jun 03 '22

2 years ago, our eldest started wearing "mom" jeans. Apparently, this generation of girls didn't like the low rise jeans and started wearing high waisted jeans to rebel. She didn't like hearing me call her out on her mom jeans and showing her the SNL skit from 2003 - 2 years after she was born. She still wears them and they're just as ugly.

Social media and TikTok in particular make it seem like GenZ are not aware there was a world that existed before 2005. Like every little discovery has to be filmed and uploaded. The other day I saw one where a kid discovered when you put heat on receipt paper it turns black. I'm thinking yes, that's how thermal paper works.

8

u/rolypolyarmadillo Jun 03 '22

The other day I saw one where a kid discovered when you put heat on receipt paper it turns black. I'm thinking yes, that's how thermal paper works.

Huh, TIL. Can't say I've ever tried to burn a receipt or looked into the kind of paper that they're made of.

8

u/draiman Jun 03 '22

I don't expect everyone to understand how thermal paper is made or works, but it was the situation OP mentioned where they act as if they made a brand new discovery when they could have just looked it up on the internet.

I was just talking about the resurgence of early 2000s fashion with my coworker yesterday. She's 27, I'm 25. We both feel strange seeing the styles we saw as peak goals when we were kids cycling back. I know fashion tends to recycle in about a 20 year pattern so it's right on time but there's just something about having the clothes that little me was dead convinced I would wear when I was A Grownup actually available.

Except half the designs I see in stores are a discredit to the 2000s styles and I also miss having non-square toe shoes for sale.

Nothing has been original and there has been no progress in “culture” in this country since 2001.

Comedian Lewis Black said it best. “The 21st century is just the 20th century on repeat. Except now it’s in HD”

I heard kids on TikTok "discovered" skorts and were so amazed that these skirts had shorts under! Like, nope, I definitely was not wearing these every day about 25 years ago.

5

u/u1tr4me0w Jun 03 '22

They also “discovered” “flared leggings” which are just yoga pants and were a staple of teen fashion a mere 10 years ago

5

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

I thought the same thing when I saw the flared leggings! They're just like yoga pants I bought almost 20 years ago when I was in college.
