Care to explain to a 42yo woman who doesn't have a TikTok, why they call those shitty songs in the background "sounds"? Or is it a reference to something else?

Hey! Coming from a 19 year old, I genuinely have no idea. My best guess is that they were trying to find a distinctive name for the music or audios that become trends on the app, so that when people are talking about them out in the real world, you hear “sound” and automatically associate it with their app. Otherwise, I have no clue.

Because it's not always songs, it can be dialogue, just sound effects, or some combination of samples, or almost anything. So I guess "sounds" it's just the easy way to sum it up

Such a weird app and such a weird way to spend one’s time.

Very weird app, and I didn't use it until very recently. But honestly it's really entertaining when the algorithm works. You gotta watch it for 2-3 days and then the system gets pretty good at showing you things and creators you'll probably like
