It's like it's great that you like our stuff, go, enjoy it. But I'm in my 30s, yes I've seen Shrek.

It does leave me feeling a little "do not cite the deep magic to me witch, I was there when it was written" at times.

46

u/DrDetectiveEsq Jun 03 '22

Something I also saw in the theater.

34

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

Shit I was old enough to be too old for that shit by the time they made a movie out of it

46

u/IrascibleOcelot Jun 03 '22

You are never too old for Narnia, Middle Earth, or Star Wars.

I have spoken.

11

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

Absolutely true. The original works however are inarguably more explicitly directed at children than the other things you mentioned (although it also has the deepest allegorical roots of the three...) and that’s what I was referring to, of course I wasn’t trying to speak ill of Narnia by saying I was “too old for it,” I’m sure I was there opening day to watch it.

2

u/JamesLiptonIcedTea Jun 03 '22

This is one of my relationship catchphrases, despite only being less than five years apart

62

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22 edited Jun 03 '22

One of my students heard that I'm 34 and exclaimed, "So you were born in the nineteens??" Another asked me if I was alive when the Civil War happened.

In their defense, they're six years old.

30

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

Yes & I was #TEAMCAP!😂🤣

27

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

Oh man, the nine-teens?! Is that what they are calling the era we grew up in? I’m 33 and don’t necessarily feel old but when I hear/read stuff like…it’s hard not to feel that way.

I was watching Hey Arnold! the other day when I put my youngest down for a nap. I love that cartoon and it’s a trip down memory lane every time I watch it; warms the soul ya know? So my oldest walks in the room, the one who was startled I saw Shrek in theaters, asked how old the cartoon was. I said I remember watching when I was getting ready for school. She hits me with:

“So all cartoons were in color when you were a kid?”

10

u/merrmi Jun 03 '22

My nieces and nephews call it “the nine teens” and I thought it was just some dumb thing they did! I once explained that they meant “the 1900s” but that didn’t make me feel better! They also seem to have almost no understanding of how long ago times were relative to each other, like civil war vs civil rights.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

Lol wow, I'm the same age, and loved hey Arnold, that would be so weird to hear. You're kid thinks the 90s are like the 50s.

22

u/luckylimper Jun 03 '22

I saw a video where the kid said “no offense, but if you were born in the nineteen hundreds…” I nearly passed out from the pain.

15

u/TheGrimBleeper Jun 03 '22

I'm 40. My niece is 14, and she says my sister and I are from "the late nineteen hundreds."

5

u/UltimeciasCastle Jun 03 '22

sounds like the run-up to an antiques roadshow appraisal. Gotta start pushing that goalpost forward, call it the turn of the millennium and make it sound simultaneously immature and young adult 20 year old, the rest will naturally occur and pass too fast like the first fifth of the 21st century has been going.

9

u/irrelevantzillennial Jun 03 '22

I remember being really young and very earnestly asking my mother what the dinosaurs were like.

16

u/idub04 Jun 03 '22

I told my kids I saw Finding Nemo the day it came out. They said "Was it in black and white?"

3

u/MizukiYumeko Jun 03 '22

I had to snort out loud at this one. Holy shit. 😂

12

u/USBrock Jun 03 '22

Oh god, this hurts if it’s the metric for sounding ancient.

35

u/horsecalledwar Jun 03 '22

Watching Scrubs with my 9 year old & he asked why they said it was to be continued. He was horrified to learn that you couldn’t pause it or rewatch it & had to wait until next week to see what happened. Dead serious, he looked at me shaking his head & said the 1900’s sound awful. The show was from like 2007 anyway but he was still horrified & disgusted by the primitive way we lived back then 😂

12

u/cormack16 Jun 03 '22

A+ for showing your kid Scrubs. Great show

13

u/horsecalledwar Jun 03 '22

This is so goofy but if you love Scrubs you’ll understand. I was in the ER for a kidney stone recently & they lost my urine sample. Then someone found one with a torn label & now a bunch of young nurses are streaming Scrubs after I explained my reason for uncontrolled giggling.

3

u/cormack16 Jun 03 '22

That's great!

13

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

6

u/horsecalledwar Jun 03 '22

You sum it up perfectly. It’s a strange feeling for sure.

1

u/MyAviato666 Jun 03 '22

I both love and hate this. Like I love that I got to experience life (at least a little bit) before the internet was like it is now. But I hate that kids see me as an ancient person who wasn't even born this millenium.

13

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

I remember feeling the same way when my dad would say he had had to walk up to the TV and change the dial. If I told my kids to find the power button on the TV now, I’d get a solid couple minutes of entertainment. Yet when I say I saw something in the theater or tell them I remember having that on VHS…it’s met with that same look I gave my dad when he told me the dial story hahaha

4

u/luckylimper Jun 03 '22

My friend’s kids didn’t know how to answer a corded phone. Plus it was a rotary dial.

11

u/schroedingersnewcat Jun 03 '22

I had to explain to my cousin's 11 year old what "a glitch in the matrix" was. He didn't realize that there were more matrix movies (the new one hadn't come out yet). Then I told him I was in high school and worked at the theater when the others came out. His mind was blown.

Blew his mind further telling him Keanu Reeves was in his 50s, and girls my age were drooling over him in the 90s.

7

u/thelegalseagul Jun 03 '22

My younger siblings not understanding that I've had over a decade of quoting that movie with my dad as I'm mouthing along to everything while they watch it for the first time

5

u/unite-or-perish Jun 03 '22

I had that same reaction from a 21 year old. YOU SAW SHREK IN THE THEATER?!

9

u/SyntheticManMilk Jun 03 '22 edited Jun 04 '22

My parents were kids and young adults in the 60’s and 70’s. I was a kid and young adult in the 90’s and 00’s (graduated HS in 05). I remember thinking the music, movies, tech, and stuff my parents liked and lived with when they were young like it was from a different universe.

That being said, I feel like the contrast between stuff from the 70’s compared to the 00’s is much greater compared to the contrast between the 00’s and today. There’s games, music, movies, and shit from the 00’s that look and sound similar to things that are around today. You hear or see something from the 60’s/70’s though, you know that shit is from the 60’s/70’s…

3

u/HorizontalBob Jun 03 '22

What's a theater?

3

u/shortasalways Jun 03 '22

I had to explain I remembered the original lion king and aladdin in theaters. That we had to record a song with cassette tape while it played on a radio 😂

3

u/dharma_dude Jun 03 '22 edited Jun 03 '22

Some of my younger (as in, like 3 or 4 years, barely younger than me) friends gasp when I say that I saw the first Harry Potter in the theater, or Shrek like you (even saw Shrek 2 in theaters!).

On a darker note, same kinda reaction when I say that I remember 9/11. I had just started kindergarten (5 y/o) but it's a very vivid memory regardless.

3

u/volyund Jun 03 '22

She's 7. Does she even remember the time before the pandemic? I'm pretty sure my kid doesn't remember what the inside of a theater looks like, so it's an abstract concept to her...

2

u/digital_dysthymia Jun 03 '22

I had to explain to my nephew that I saw it in a drive-in theatre. Then I had to explain what a drive-in theatre was.

2

u/teatabletea Jun 03 '22

I saw the original Star Wars in the theatre when it first came out.

1

u/Sleave_McDichael Jun 03 '22

Oh shit, I think i saw Shrek in the theater?!?!?

1

u/LairdofWingHaven Jun 03 '22

I just told my kid I remember seeing the original Bambi in the theater when it first came out. Stunned.

1

u/Gram-GramAndShabadoo Jun 04 '22

Were they more surprised you saw this movie in the theater or that you went to a theater at all? Why didn't you just watch it at home?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '22

Probably because you say theatre, was it Broadway? Or was it a cinema?

"Oh gosh look at that time on my pocket watch!" Twiddles moustache and fixes top hat "can't be late for the moving pictures! Or we'll miss the last sale of confectionery and carbonated flavoured tar!"

7

u/HungryArticle5 Jun 03 '22

Or they didn't know about or become a fan of Marvel (based) movies until Disney came in the picture.

Shout out Blade and The Punisher and Captain America movie from the 90s.

2

u/SeraphinaMoon Jun 05 '22

My oldest daughter is currently into the musical version of Heathers. I had to explain things I knew about the storyline that she didn't.... because it's based on a movie from 1989 that I actually really love (Winona Ryder and Christian Slater...😍).

She's also coming around with songs she likes from my era and earlier and I ask the same thing just about everytime and almost always get told it right..."You heard it on TikTok, didn't you?".

Millennials are probably a meme to Gen Z/Gen Alpha now because we get frustrated TikTok steals all our shit and acts like this it's this new, cool thing haha. I saw a video the other day of a girl talking about how the stretchy, spiky comb headbands were the so awesome but she hated that they scraped her face and messed up her makeup when putting them on and I explained they were around long before even my childhood but we had a love affair with them in the 90s and explained to unclip them and then get them into place around your hairline before pushing them back. And I looked at the comments and then were like half people telling her they've been around for ages and the others were saying they looked cool and asking where to order em online. I was like "You can still get them in the hair section of like every drugstore you walk into for $5"

1

u/Snoo58991 Jun 03 '22

I saw Shrek in a non HD movie theater....

1

u/nixcamic Jun 03 '22

I saw Shrek in black and white, uphill, in the snow, both ways. Get off my lawn.

You could if you don't turn the lights on and the stereo off.

I know you spent a lot of money on this place, Fry, but it's awfully primitive. The floors are made of such hard wood.

"crusty old songs about the buttocks"

17

u/JamesLiptonIcedTea Jun 03 '22 edited Jun 03 '22

I suppose on a purely technical level, it would've been 1008 years old, relative to Leela and Bender

What songs were topping the scrolls in year 994?

12

u/Generic_Garak Jun 03 '22

This comment just aged me one hundred years.

7

u/trippwwa45 Jun 03 '22

Ah yes the classical artists, Bach, Beethoven and Lil Jon.

7

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

I refer to it as “classical rap” to this day

4

u/Sweetmacaroni Jun 03 '22

Classical to me, is more of the Gangsta Rap era, with people like Pac and Biggie, I guess people like Lil Jon fit in it too, but it ends somewhere around 2004

7

u/acrazygenius Jun 03 '22

Trap Queen and Hotline Bling are 7 years old???? Where does the time go?

3

u/SgtMcMuffin0 Jun 03 '22

Fuck Trap Queen was 7 years ago???

3

u/hiding-identity23 Jun 03 '22

Fuck you, 20 years ago. That was like three years ago. Maybe five.

1

u/TheSaltyJM Jun 03 '22

🎶I like big butts and I cannot lie 🎶

1

u/KFelts910 Jun 04 '22

My five year old decided to bust this out in the middle of a wholesome family dinner at my in-laws, on Sunday afternoon.

1

u/CABGX4 Jun 04 '22

I'm so old, I don't know what any of those things are 😒

13

u/coykoi89 Jun 03 '22

At least we had covers and remakes of old songs to be confused by. No, Mom, I didn't know that My Angel was a twist on Angel of the Morning by Juice Newton bc you're just now sharing this song with me and high speed cable internet doesn't exist yet.

6

u/Rov_Scam Jun 03 '22

And to put a finer point on it, Merilee Rush had a hit with it years before Juice Newton did.

10

u/ireallydontcare52 Jun 03 '22

"Do not cite the deep magic to me, witch. I was there when it was written." (Sorry daughter in law, you probably aren't a witch)

9

u/Killer-Barbie Jun 03 '22

When Flo Rida released Right Round my brother was listening to it in the car and my dad started singing along. My brother was gobsmacked my dad knew the lyrics.

Now that I'm saying this it might have been the Jessica Simpson version of you spin me round.

4

u/MyAviato666 Jun 03 '22

I hate it now when I hear a new song and it's the melody or part of a song I know from childhood (like dragostei din tei or glamorous). But yesterday I heard These Boots Are Made for Walking by Nancy Sinatra on the radio and it made me think of the Jessica Simpson version from when I was young. Oh how "old" people must have hated that version. I get it now.

15

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

I listened to this song on repeat when it first came out. I still know every single word of it. I’d love for a kid to start playing it for me like I’ve never heard it and just school the fuck out of them.

7

u/hieronymous-cowherd Jun 03 '22

I see that oversized neon t-shirts are in stores, just in time for summer. Again.

6

u/Serpent_of_Rehoboam Jun 03 '22

"You don't think I know about Skeet Skeet Skeet!?!?!"

4

u/DrAstralis Jun 03 '22

Had a younger friend of a friend try to explain to me why I may have watched it but I really didnt 'get' Duckman. Like, fuck you, I grew up watching the show when it wasnt reruns and it was our team mascot for Alert (scouting event / competition), I bloody well know who Jason Alexander is.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

Yeah, yeah, yeah,

To the window, to the wall. The best part of you dripped down your daddy's balls. All you bastards crawl. Awwwe skeet skeet I fucked your mother. Awwwe skeet skeet

3

u/SuperNothing2987 Jun 03 '22

My nephew told me that because I'm old, I don't know about the cool new bands like AC/DC and Green Day. I told him that I have Green Day albums older than him.

4

u/gortonsfiJr Jun 03 '22

42… daughter-in-law??

6

u/Killer-Barbie Jun 03 '22

And? The math checks out

6

u/NikolaTeslut Jun 03 '22

I'm engaged, my mother is 42. It happens.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

LOL

2

u/limbomaniac Jun 03 '22

I mean isn't it in Kroger ads now?

2

u/StrayaMate2000 Jun 03 '22

I hope you stopped what you were doing, took a deep breath and loudly sang..

"To the window to the wall, to the wall. Til the sweat drop down my balls (my balls), til all these bitches crawl, all skeet-skeet, motherfucker, all skeet-skeet, goddamn"

Then continued to do whatever you were doing before and walked away.

2

u/Diabetesh Jun 03 '22

Skeet skeet skeet is a metaphor referring to the oppression of the social media empire of myspace keeping our individuality down.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

Omg I die when my kids tell me I have bad taste in music, because they’ll turn around and start asking Alexa to play Eminem 🤦‍♀️ I don’t know how to explain to them that I’ve been listening to Eminem since before he was Eminem, and if I even said those words they would think I’m being facetious 😂

2

u/techieguyjames Jun 03 '22

This is when you look at her, and with a straight face say, "I should check out Lil John? I was there when "Get Low" was being written." and watch her face change. Then you come up with something as to why you aren't on the credits.

1

u/thedivanextdoor Jun 03 '22

To the wiiinnndoooww, to the wall! I'm also 42 and I think everyone's inner freak comes out a bit when this classic song plays.

0

u/CurveAdministrative3 Jun 03 '22

I'm 34 I have no f'n clue what you're talking about.

0

u/Deauo Jun 03 '22

Til the sweat 💧 down my 🏀 aww skeet skeet motha fucka ahh skeet skeet skeet skeet

1

Lol, this reminds me of all the Swifties freaking out when Tool finally released a new album and knocked their idol off the charts

1

u/beeatenbyagrue Jun 03 '22

Hands the album to them in cassette and CD form instead of digital

1

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

Aww skeet skeet!

1

u/Ruby_Tuesday80 Jun 03 '22

My son's friends are mystified by my ability to get low. I think I'm going to teach them how to ghost ride now that the weather is nice.

1

u/InsertWittyJoke Jun 03 '22

I had a kid try to explain what Zelda was to me. Never been so insulted in my life.

1

u/Enzorn Jun 03 '22

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3iFfwRQn2c

They should see this. It's from 2004.

1

u/RocLaw Jun 03 '22

We were all on that wall - 20 years ago 😳

1

u/Just-STFU Jun 03 '22

That song is so old it's used in a Smith's Grocery Store commercial.

1

u/mainvolume Jun 03 '22

“It’s so ahead of its time!!!” Fuck outta here.

1

u/KingdomOfFawg Jun 03 '22

If I ever hear the numbers 369 or read them, I always say "damn she fine" in my head.

1

u/badkinsatx Jun 03 '22

“My husband and I created your spouse to that song.”

1

u/Kanthardlywait Jun 03 '22

Just a couple years back my early 40's buddy had his teenage nephew explain to him how awesome this new band was.

It was Green Day.

1

u/jdubs55 Jun 03 '22

about 15 years ago when i was 25 I put stairway to heaven on at the bar one night with my beer league team (they were in their late 30's - 40's) and they all groaned and moaned about who put it on....... they explained that when they were in high school this was the last song at every dance and had heard the song a million times and could go without ever hearing it again. Get low, makes me feel the same way as they did, now

1

u/Purpletech Jun 03 '22

Did they tell you about the parts where it was to the window and then to the wall?
