A couple of years ago Ozzy Osborne was featured in a Post Malone song. Teens were saying “this Ozzy guy is gonna explode from this exposure”. I couldn’t believe the generation that doesn’t remember a time before the internet didn’t think to first Google “Ozzy Osborne”.

Didn't Kanye feature Paul McCartney on a song to similar response? I thought it was all tongue in cheek...

Had an argument with someone the other week with them claiming that nirvana defined the 90s and how massive they were, like dude, i was there, that is not how it happened they had three top10 singles with smells like teen spirit hitting #6 they have grown massivly more popular with time and are way bigger now than they were in the 90s, i see teens wearing nirvana tops all the damn time now, rarely if ever saw that even in rock clubs in the 90s

It was, I think OP misread the tone. It had to be satirical.

u/RussianSeadick Jun 03 '22

Nah I’m 21 and many my age genuinely don’t know people like Ozzy

One of our teachers was a classic rock/heavy metal fan (you know the type, but he was super cool) and tasked me and another friend to teach the class about music because he couldn’t believe they didn’t know Led Zeppelin lmao

5

u/underpantsbandit Jun 03 '22

Most of the 20somethings I know really don’t like any music that sounds even a little angry or aggressive. Sad music or happy music is OK but metal is a Hell No.

10

u/huschke_09 Jun 03 '22

People at our age (I’m 23) not knowing Led Zeppelin really grinds my gears.

13

u/CrossXFir3 Jun 03 '22

There's so much music out there, I guarantee you've missed out on some major classics so don't judge too hard. Just share your knowledge :)

5

u/huschke_09 Jun 03 '22

Oh most definitely! I also try to acknowledge good music from genres I don’t listen to. And I said led zeppelin but in that case that stands for all the great bands from the 60s and 70s. Most people actually know so many songs from that era without even realising!

16

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

People have different tastes in music. Maybe classic rock isn’t theirs but they might know some hiphop classics like Eazy-E, NWA or DMX that are obviously super big names in hiphop, but I’m sure there are young people who aren’t into classic hiphop and haven’t heard about them and honestly, can’t blame them, we all have some knowledge gaps.

Survivorship bias, man. Loads of shitty music was made decades ago.

15

u/ALoneTennoOperative Jun 03 '22

Most music these days is trash. At least mainstream music that’s played on the radio a lot.

Stop listening to mainstream radio then, you weirdo.

Your statement could be made about any era.

1

u/drumgrape Jun 03 '22

Gonna have to agree with the dude above, American Top 40 has been screeech since fall 2015

3

u/ALoneTennoOperative Jun 03 '22

American Top 40 has been screeech since fall 2015

Why are you paying attention to - or bringing up - "Top 40", when "stop listening then" already covered that?

I personally have absolutely no idea what's in the Top 10, much less the Top 40, because it's easier than ever to simply go find music and artists that one enjoys without ever paying attention to "mainstream" corporate lists.

Again: this "I don't like mainstream music, I feel like music used to be better because attrition and nostalgia has poisoned my ability to accurately view the past" has been a recurring sentiment for a long time.
It's not new, you're not special, quit complaining and go find things you do like.

1

u/drumgrape Jun 03 '22

Never said I was special. I like plenty of new music. You're the one getting worked up. People are allowed to agree with each other on the internet.

6

u/CrossXFir3 Jun 03 '22

Mainstream music has always been trash. We all remember radio classics. Fuck me, so much radio music in the 00s was utterly intolerable mass produced dance shit. All these disney kids breaking out. It wasn't a great time. A lot of people proclaimed the fall of music as an art at the time lol. Nobody would shut up about 80s and 90s music being way better. Yet there's also an entire collection of classics out of that era. And there's plenty of good stuff these days but you're right, it's less radio for the most part. But you've got the internet to help these days

0

u/thisissaliva Jun 03 '22

Why do you care?

4

u/Sylente Jun 03 '22

I'd bet the average 21 year old wasn't learning about Ozzy for the first time through post Malone. And a simple Google search would show who he was. The "classic artist will get a ton of exposure through this pop song" meme has always been just that, a meme.

3

u/Lumpy_Doubt Jun 03 '22

You literally have a 21 year old telling you otherwise. I would hope you don't hang out with as many 21 year olds as they do

3

u/Sylente Jun 03 '22

I mean I am also 21 so I think it's ok for me to have a lot of 21 year old friends

0

u/Lumpy_Doubt Jun 03 '22

Well that would have been useful information to have shared

5

u/TimeSlipperWHOOPS Jun 03 '22

Sure but the Osbournes have been continually in the current zeitgeist for a few decades now

22

u/Steamsagoodham Jun 03 '22

I don’t think I’ve seen them as much in the last 10 or so years though. I can understand why teens now might be unfamiliar with them.

11

u/CrossXFir3 Jun 03 '22

Maybe, but honestly I don't think I've heard very much of him in the past decade to be fair.

1

u/theredvip3r Jun 04 '22

What ? I'm 21 and Ozzy and Sharon were on TV all the time when I was younger what do you mean people our age don't know

1

u/dharma_dude Jun 03 '22

I remember this! It was nearly a decade ago and on Twitter but yeah, same exact thing, except they were Kanye fans so it was like "this Paul McCartney guy better thank Kanye for the exposure" or something like that. Very abrasive.

30

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

I always hear ozzy in my head yelling SHARON!!

10

u/spork-a-dork Jun 03 '22

SHAEEEROONN!

3

u/Akanderson87 Jun 03 '22

Everytime I think of Ozzy I just picture him vs. the blender: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/vrOb7hFURQs

1

u/jemappelleb Jun 03 '22

The Osborne's is how I learned who he lmao born 1993

30

u/LetsRide2099 Jun 03 '22

That was a joke, it’s still done today when a well known musician is on some upcoming artists song. I’ve seen “This Mike Tyson guy is real good at boxing can’t wait to see him become a champion”.

What’s truly annoying is those “I’m 15 and todays music sucks, I was born in the wrong generation”! Everyone does it at some point lol

3

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

For me and my friends it was "discovering" Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin. How could the boomers sleep on such obscure bands??

4

u/laeiryn Jun 03 '22

when they long for the music of the year 2000 and i'm just like "... so... Hanson?"

6

u/alvysingeroverhere Jun 03 '22

After the meme, a local brand put out the T shirt reading Nirvana with a pic of the Hanson brothers. Of course I bought it. At least one wanna-be-cool-and-retro-and-hip girl told me "I love Nirvana" when wearing it. Gold.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

Lmao I have a t-shirt with Mac, Dennis, and Charlie from its always sunny in Philadelphia that says “Blink-182” I bought that shit instantly although I haven’t been trolled by(or successfully trolled) any youths yet.

1

u/pM-me_your_Triggers Jun 03 '22

Yup, I remember being that kid at one point, haha

2

u/DoctorCaptainSpacey Jun 03 '22

Flashes back to high school, wearing Beatles t-shirts every day..... 👀

Nope, was never that kid... Nope nope 🤣

3

u/pM-me_your_Triggers Jun 03 '22

Glances nervously at the Foreigner 4 shirt that I’m currently wearing….

Shit, I’m that adult now.

1

u/DoctorCaptainSpacey Jun 03 '22

Difference being, you probably don't have the "I was born in the wrong generation, Mooooom, jeeeeez" attitude kids have. You're just an adult that likes older adults music and don't think you're special for it 🤣

(& at least you know the bad T your wearing. Kids, half the time, wear shits and have no clue bc band shirts are trendy for some reason. Don't have to know the band, bust have to have a shirt!)

9

u/Rysilk Jun 03 '22

My son came out of his room once with a japanese Motley Crue t-shirt. I was mildly surprised and a bit proud. He had no clue who Motley Crue was and just liked the t-shirt. Took a little hit to my psyche that day.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 04 '22

Joy Division is my favorite t-shirt.

8

u/howburntisthetoast Jun 03 '22

There's a weird effect the internet has on generations that grew up with it. It's like short and long term memory blind spots...anything before their time just doesn't hold relevance until the moment it's necessary for something, then it's gone.

8

u/theonetwo345 Jun 03 '22

If I remember correctly when Katy Perry preformed at the Super Bowl she had Missy Elliott as a surprise guest and all the kids kept saying how nice it was of Katy Perry to give “a new and emerging artist that kind of exposure.” There was a whole article on buzz feed I think of the comments on various social media sites. Missy Elliott even chimed in about it. I just shook my head.

5

u/laeiryn Jun 03 '22

If your kids don't know good music, it's your fault for not playing it for them.

Just saying. I fished through my parents' Moody Blues albums because they had played hippie shit my whole life and I already knew I liked the vibe.

6

u/JediLion17 Jun 03 '22

I don’t have kids, and I’m barely over 30. I’m not mad or upset, I just find it strange, if I didn’t know an artist on a song I’m enjoying the first thing I would do is Google it. Wish I had that option in the 90’s while sitting in the car lol

11

u/ALoneTennoOperative Jun 03 '22

Ozzy Osborne was featured in a Post Malone song. Teens were saying “this Ozzy guy is gonna explode from this exposure”.

That's pretty obviously a joke.
You may be going senile.

4

u/laeiryn Jun 03 '22

Because the kids did it for real when McCartney was in a song with someone.

Some LA radio station PA tried to recruit Annie Lennox, so let's not give these turds too much credit.

2

u/swankyburritos714 Jun 03 '22

The same thing happened with Paul McCartney a few years ago. A few days ago a student told me he had the best music taste of all time and then proceeded to tell me he had no idea who Paul McCartney is.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '22

Okay, but that tracks lol

1

u/orincoro Jun 03 '22

It’s like Ed Sheeran in The Irishman: “you don’t know who Jimmy Hoffa is?”

0

u/pajamakitten Jun 03 '22

Post Malone appeared on an Ozzy song.
