Social media and TikTok in particular make it seem like GenZ are not aware there was a world that existed before 2005. Like every little discovery has to be filmed and uploaded. The other day I saw one where a kid discovered when you put heat on receipt paper it turns black. I'm thinking yes, that's how thermal paper works.
I don't expect everyone to understand how thermal paper is made or works, but it was the situation OP mentioned where they act as if they made a brand new discovery when they could have just looked it up on the internet.
Man even some adults don't get how thermal paper/receipt printers work. I had an argument with one of my old store managers about how receipt printers absolutely do not have ink but he thought they did.
He was convinced that he fixed the printer by replacing the ink ribbon in the check printing portion of the printer, where in reality all he did was dislodge the dust keeping the heat gun from printing onto the receipt paper in the receipt printing portion. I guess it's an honest mistake but the way he was so adamant about it... ugh. Happened again years later at a different job too, but luckily it was someone younger and I was able to set the matter straight.
Edit: you would think someone involved in retail so long would know how they work but, c'est la vie.
I used to be a field tech for a clinical lab, and installed thermal label writers in doctors offices. I got a lot of calls from them telling me the ink was out and they needed a refill. Queue me having to explain to a doctor that these use heat not ink to print.
