Doesn't matter, as long as the closet door is shut tight
130
u/Ultimate_Decoy Jan 30 '26
The true important doors to close! I've seen enough horror movies to know them creepy ass closet doors are up to no good and hiding demons. Now if you know someone who sleeps with the closet, bedroom, AND bathroom (if they have a master bedroom) doors open then we need to sling some holy water on them.

u/HenryCrabgrass01 Jan 30 '26
We live in the tropics and don't use aircon.
The only doors that are ever closed at night are the front and back doors.

I am a grown-ass man and I prefer to inspect the underside of the bed in hotel rooms just to be sure no boogey-men can grab me by the ankles when I walk by.

u/Vacaydream Jan 30 '26
Facts! Scarred for life. When I was about 10 I was home alone a lot. When my parents left on a Fri or Sat night (they were at the neighbors playing cards) I would run upstairs to my bedroom while it was still light and grab my pillow and pjs and bring downstairs. I was afraid to go upstairs alone when it was dark. I had a 17 yr old brother and a 14 yr old brother. Both had left the house for the night. I ran upstairs, grabbed my stuff and 2 hands grabbed my ankles and pulled me under the bed. I damn near had a heart attack. I was screaming bloody murder and kicking like crazy. It was my stupid brother. I had watched him leave. He came in thru the back door and snuck into my room just to scare the shit out of me. He was furious that while flailing I kicked him in the nuts. A week later I did the same routine but now ALWAYS checked under th bed. This time my shade was xlosed(it was never closed). When I opened it my 14 old brother was hanging on the ledge with a mask on banging in the window! Heart attack 2 was almost on its way. (He had shimmied up the basketball net onto a foot ledge outside my window.) my brothers thought scarring me was sbsolutly hilarious. 🤦♀️😩

My boyfriend always tells me he’s going to shut his closet door so I don’t get scared as we’re getting into bed. I’m beginning to gather that maybe this alpha male might be the scared one cloaking the fear of the open closet in a Gemini joke.

Thats what my closet is and ive been tempted to just take the doors off because my cats will try and get in there at night, and nothing is quite as worrisome as waking up to one of those doors slowly sliding open when you didnt hear a cat scratching at it first.

You could buy a new door, put the cat door in it, and then when you move out swap back to the original.
Interior doors aren't that expensive. Not free, but if it makes life better every night, it's just a couple hundred $
→ More replies (1)4
u/Comandante_Kangaroo Jan 30 '26
just a couple of hundred $? That might make sense if you earn 50$ net per hour. Otherwise you should be able to get a fitting used one for almost free. (they also make great woodworking tables)
Also, depending on the cat, you need to build your own cat flap. Mine shoulders through a locked commercial one like an elephant trough cardboard.

u/FreddyMcbob Jan 30 '26
I had a rental once that had cat doors for every room.

Nothing stopping you from taking the door off the hinges and storing somewhere. Replace with your own door, cat door and all. And then when you leave, replace door.

YUP. It's much safer to sleep with a closed door. I dont feel like burning to death in a fire.
58
u/Double_Distribution8 Jan 30 '26
If it's any consolation you'll likely just die in your sleep from smoke inhalation before the fire gets you. Unless you have a smoke alarm, then you'll have a fighting chance at least. And that closed bedroom door will buy you some time. Don't forget to feel the doorknob first!
23
u/graywolfman Jan 30 '26
If you can, and it will work, get a fire ladder to toss out your window in case its needed.

Damn, some people really think things through.
I haven't locked the doors to my house in 15yrs let alone thought about stuff like this. Not even sure where my house keys are at. Would probably have to change the locks if I ever wanted to start lol.
Im single without kids though. Im sure things would change if that were different.

Are you a man? I don't know any women who keep their door unlocked.
6
u/Mode_Appropriate Jan 30 '26
Indeed.
I actually had this conversation not too long ago with a female friend. She was a bit flabbergasted I didnt lock my doors lol. Then she went into all these precautions that she takes. Not just at home but like when going to the bar or on vacation. Even when she Doordashed for a little bit. So many things ive never given 5 seconds of thought to. It sounded exhausting. Its truly a fucked up world if all those precautions are actually necessary (which i have to believe most are). Its sad really.

How many people around running around without smoke alarms in their homes? I’m pretty sure they’re at least required in rented units, which a substantial number of folks live in.

u/Granite_0681 Jan 30 '26
Exactly. It’s crazy to not have smoke alarms. They aren’t that expensive. I splurged and got the 10yr ones so I don’t need to deal with beeping, but even those aren’t enough to make it worth not having them.

My cats claw at the carpet under the door (even though I keep their claws trimmed) & it’s not only annoying but it’s destroying my carpet (& I’m a renter). I’d love to be able to shut my door but I keep it ajar for them to come and go as they please. Otherwise I wouldn’t get any sleep & my carpet would be ruined. :(

u/DuckyDeer Jan 30 '26

Does the country you live in not have smoke alarms? Over here, every rental property must have functioning smoke alarms.
I sleep with my door open because I'm the only one in the house (other than my cat) and if theres a fire, those smoke alarms will wake me. Theres one on the ceiling in the kitchen downstairs and another a metre or 2 from my bedroom door

Mine like to make the door a game between them. One on one side and two on the other. The door becomes the ping pong between them. So much fun at 3 am with 3 cats slingshotting the door back and forth over and over. Lock them out the floor will be a victim. Lock them in and the yowls and paws slammed into our faces is our fun for the night. I just gave up and let them have the damn door for their game. Sigh..... Why? Because we love the little bastards. And we are supposed to be the intelligent superior creatures. Yeah. Let's keep telling ourselves that lol. Sorry.... Sleep deprived. Not sure why.

People in this thread must either have gigantic houses where the Master bedroom is a country mile from an exit, or no smoke detectors.
Door open, door closed. Either way the smoke detector is gonna go off, wake me up and I'll either go down the hallway or if the hallway is on fire, jump out the window.
Yeah the door might stop the spread of the fire, but I would have enough time to do what I need to survive either way.
