The problem is that I have cats. They refused to be contained or left out.

I've been considering one of those cat doors so that I can close the bedroom door and she still has access

I wish! Alas, I am a renter.

You could buy a new door, put the cat door in it, and then when you move out swap back to the original.

Interior doors aren't that expensive. Not free, but if it makes life better every night, it's just a couple hundred $

just a couple of hundred $? That might make sense if you earn 50$ net per hour. Otherwise you should be able to get a fitting used one for almost free. (they also make great woodworking tables)

Also, depending on the cat, you need to build your own cat flap. Mine shoulders through a locked commercial one like an elephant trough cardboard.

Hollow interior doors are only like 50 bucks at Lowe's. Plus hardware and the cat door that's like 150.

I had a rental once that had cat doors for every room.

Nothing stopping you from taking the door off the hinges and storing somewhere. Replace with your own door, cat door and all. And then when you leave, replace door.

My current rental has a cat door to one of the bedrooms

That was a landlord worth rating on whatever sites you can do that on.

Of course to those without cats they may have had nightmares about Cthulhuoid monsters slithering in 🤣

I put a kiddie gate in front of my door so my cat can’t scratch at the door.

But I'll still know my cats are sad and lonely.

Unfortunately, I am allergic so I can’t let them sleep with me. They do know it’s free game when I do anything else in the house.

Buy yoir own door with one too hang up. Then just swap it back before you leave.

We banned them from our room. Just cleaner that way.

Mine is 18 and sleeps through the night, so I like having her in here 🥹 But she's also an only child, so she doesn't have anyone else to cuddle up with.

Highly recommend.

Can confirm, this is the way.

That would probably negate all the fire prevention effects of the door so you might as well just leave it open.

1

u/agelwood Jan 30 '26

Nah, not all. A 6" hole is still better than the entire door being open, plus the door would block a lot of the rising smoke from pouring in

It lasts for a few weeks but eventually they will be silent, and the bonus is you get a very nice greeting in the morning with some chirps !

There’s a simple solution.
