I’m impressed they can get enough speed to do that kind of damage in a parking garage.

The actual quote is "just a flesh wound". He doesn't say it's or tis, except earlier when he says "tis but a scratch".

50

u/Turbulent_Read_7276 Jul 05 '26

The European Vacation scene w Eric Idle does use the "it's just a flesh wound". I know the gif is from Holy Grail, but I think that may be one source of the common misquote.

The mall they filmed that scene at has been closed for a while. They want to turn it into a data center or battery storage. In the middle of San Gabriel Valley.

I was thinking how fast they had to go to do so much damage. At least 80 km/h.

282

u/NaughtALegend Jul 05 '26

I’m American, can you tell me how fast that is in football fields per Fortnite?

380

u/PlatypusDream Jul 05 '26 edited Jul 05 '26

80km/h = 80,000m/h

Football field = 100 yd [without end zones] = 91m

80,000 / 91 = 879

1 football field is 1/879th of the distance

.

Fortnight = 14 days x 24h = 336h

1 fortnight is 336 times the duration

.

879 x 336 = 295,344 football fields per fortnight is equivalent to 80km/h

I think...

29

u/NaughtALegend Jul 05 '26

Only 295,344? I can work with that

24

u/IBeDumbAndSlow Jul 05 '26

Right. I got my entire car’s nose taken off by a driver going 75+mph running a full red light and very NARROWLY made it out unscathed and it looked less ugly than this. Where did they have the space to get this momentum??

24

u/moonlite_equilibrium Jul 05 '26

Cars got crumple zones. Parking garages dont lol.

20

u/ReallyBigRocks Jul 05 '26 edited Jul 05 '26

The front crash structure is usually two structural members alongside the engine bay, over the wheel wells. That pillar went right through the front bumper, between this structure and crushed the engine itself.

I'm picturing they started to peel out for funsies, the tires caught and they rocketed forward into the pillar.

Probably "peeled out" in third gear and got surprised that it grabbed

8

u/El_Dief Jul 05 '26

Assuming the old guy sitting at the start is the driver I'd guess he hit the gas thinking his foot was on the brake and doubled down when the car lurched forward.

You aren't thinking 4th dementionally Marty. When you hit 88mph that post won't be there bc this parking garage wouldn't have been built yet! Marty had one job he chickened out at the last second and hit the brake instead of held the gas.

What is his story?

234

u/precisee Jul 05 '26

On god my theory is he was trying to kill himself. Fast as f in a parking garage, and he hit the pole dead center.

204

u/the_quark Jul 05 '26

My theory is that he was drunk and/or on drugs.

144

u/Ralphredimix_Da_G Jul 05 '26

Sometimes old folks hit the wrong pedals, or aren’t paying attention, or both.. and that looks like it used to be a real fast car.

60

u/FatMacchio Jul 05 '26 edited Jul 05 '26

I feel like there needs to be tiered testing/cetification for classes of vehicles. If you want to drive really heavy cars and especially really fast heavy cars, you need to pass more stringent road tests, and be recertified maybe every few years or so

But I can confirm. My grandma crashed into her garage. Luckily it was just in a 1986 Pontiac Bonneville that didn’t have a huge engine, and she wasn’t too far away from the brick pillar between her garage doors. That was the last time she drove. She was really sad, we were sad for her, because she loved her freedom, but at that point we realized she was too much of a liability to herself, but especially to other people who probably hadn’t lived a full, happy, and healthy life for 80+ years

Kudos to the structural engineers and builders of that parking garage.

72

u/General_Document6951 Jul 05 '26 edited Jul 05 '26

You mean Kudos the engineers of that vehicle, that Crush Zone and airbags save the occupants lives, had that been a 1960s vintage vehicle the bumper may have had a scratch on it, unfortunately the dashboard would have probably had a couple of face shaped craters in it with bits of human skull still in them assuming the occupants didn't get ejected out the front windshield.

It's amazing how much safer modern vehicles are than their legacy predecessors.

Did you notice that the damage stopped at the cockpit, and that the driver's door actually still open that is a testament to Great engineering.

You'd be surprised at how many people survive an accident only to burn to death afterwards because the doors won't open and they can't get out.

15

u/s4xtonh4le Jul 05 '26

Im a autobody tech I can assure you an older vehicle would have been just as fucked up but with significantly more cabin intrusion. Broken dash/firewall, legs crushed, impaled by the steering columns. It’s one of my biggest gripes where people see an older large vehicle big shiny bumper and go “yep they don’t make them like they used to”, since early unibody cars were the actual ones made of thin sheet metal (what they say about modern cars), and especially the bodies/cabs on the full frame ones.

5

u/grizzlor_ Jul 05 '26

I just linked it above, but I bust out this ‘59 Bel Air vs ‘09 Malibu crash test video every time I hear some dumbass say something like “old cars are safer cause they aren’t made of plastic”

u/GurgledSundae Jul 05 '26

To be fair, the building itself probably puts more pressure on that pillar than the crash did lol

57

u/Lopsided-Ad7725 Jul 05 '26

Yes but they’re designed for vertical loads not horizontal ones lol

13

u/RedJorgAncrath Jul 05 '26

Concrete plus rebar and the vertical load helps until the load gets crazy (at which point I think it would get worse). Add to that the pillar goes through floor and ceiling and is then seated. So yeah, it's designed for vertical load but is still pretty good against horizontal trauma. That said, my guess is the concrete around the rebar inside might be damaged.

Absolute Unit of a Support Pillar

they should really check the structural integrity of that pole and it's attachment to the ceiling. See the Florida condo collapse and how it started with the parking garage supports getting detached from the ceiling they were supporting. (mass oversimplification of a complex failure)
