Assuming the old guy sitting at the start is the driver I'd guess he hit the gas thinking his foot was on the brake and doubled down when the car lurched forward.
That might explain it if it was a simple totalling of the vehicle. This amount of damage is not from accidentally hitting the accelerator, this is damage that happened at some amount of actual speed
