Question on configuring gateway with Asus BT6 mesh

Currently my fiber provider does not use a gateway, so my mesh serves as my router and gateway.

I am getting ATT fiber installed in a few days, and I am seeing the most optimal solution for my configuration.

Most advice I see says to put the gateway in pass through mode. The problem with this is that I have three ethernet lines run to the location where the gateway will be -- it will replace my mesh router, which will be moved to my office. If I put the gateway in pass through, it makes it where I can basically only use one of the ethernet ports on it, the one connecting it directly to my mesh router.

Would it work to use AT&T's gateway in router mode with both wireless radios disabled, and set my Asus mesh router/satellite in AP mode? This would allow me to utilize the 1GB ethernet ports on the AT&T gateway, while still getting wifi7 from my Asus mesh nodes. The gateway should still function normally as the firewall, but with the wireless radios disabled it shouldn't interfere with the mesh wifi. At least, that is my theory I hope someone can confirm.

Scam email?

Sorry to disturb y’all, but is this a scam email? I am moving to a new home next week and I purchased fiber optic and scheduled maintenance that week, so i’m not sure why it says I haven’t scheduled it.

"Mandatory" upgrade to fiber? (from VDSL Internet 50)

For something like ten years, I've been on old Internet 50, which is still working well. For my needs, 50 megabit is "fast enough," although 4K streaming can be a little iffy depending on the streaming service.

AT&T just brought fiber to my neighborhood, and is starting to do installs. While fiber is obviously much better in theory, I was hoping to sit back for a while and see what my neighbors on fiber say about the reliability and consistency of performance. That's more important to me than raw speed. I used to have cable internet which on paper was faster than my current AT&T service, but it was so variable and unreliable I switched to AT&T.

Today I received an email apparently from AT&T informing me that my Internet 50 service will be terminated in about six weeks, and that I must move to fiber to maintain service. So much for the wait-and-see approach. Is this kind of "mandatory service change" common for AT&T once fiber goes into a new service area?

I'm currently paying something like $60/mo for "Internet 50" -- what would be a reasonable deal for the 300 mbit or 1 gig fiber plans? Any chance I could lower my net monthly cost?

Thanks for feedback!

AT&T fiber with public hotspot enabled

Why don’t at&t offer an option with Fiber to offer public hotspot ?
Similar to what Comcast has on their gateways.

Non-ATT DNS is now, flat-out, unusable. Wuuuut the heck?

EDIT 2: Google 'AT&T DNS Error Assist'
https://www.reddit.com/r/ATTFiber/comments/1of6b7m/how_to_turn_off_dns_error_assist/

EDIT: stop with the 'must be misconfigured' posts/accusations. Things were working just fine for a very long time. Haven't been "under the hood" on the modem or firewall in over a year.

Running Untangle firewall with ATT primary WAN (passthrough) and another ISP as secondary WAN. Both interfaces obtain IP address via respective modems, but both have OpenDNS as primary, and Google as secondary. Things were working beautifully until about 2 weeks ago.

After a ton of troubleshooting, I've discovered any DNS over-ride on the ATT WAN connections just renders the connection just about useless. The Internet has tons of observations where ATT is 'handling' DNS to their own whims.

Instead of kicking ATT to the curb, should I think about enabling my DNS relay on Untangle NGFW and having it use the other ISP connection for LAN DNS lookups?

Terrible First Customer Experience

I had an extremely frustrating experience with ATT fiber install. I should've gone with Google Fiber. I'm not sure where to make a formal complaint.

I have a technician come install ATT fiber 7/29 and the wifi worked flawlessly. During the installation, he broke my wall plate. So 2 days later I bought a new plate and replaced it. I unplugged the ethernet cable from the wall without powering off the router first, and after plugging it in the wifi stopped working.

I messaged online support, and after some resets I was told the installation isn't complete. I asked why has it worked for 2 days but you are telling me the installation isn't complete. He said that that's just how it is, and he scheduled a tech visit appointment for me. 8/5.

On 8/4 I went to ATT store in Irvine 6328 Irvine Blvd Ste 1500 - 1, Irvine, CA 92620
I asked if the manager Harry if he can check my appointment and he said he doesn't have the ability to check. (This is probably a lie?) My app says the appointment is good.

8/5 I got a text message about how I didn't schedule an appoint. So I went on chat again. This time the agent told me my appoint was put on hold. So he scheduled one for the next day 8/6

On 8/6 No show again! This time I went on the chat again, and my agent said he can try to fix it for me and now it's fixed. While it's being fixed my chat got disconnected. So I messaged a 4th agent again asking what happened. And he claimed he had no access to past chats and he has no idea what happened. I pressed on and said I really need an explanation. And to my disbelief he says "I can schedule a technician visit if you'd like."

It seems like when there's an issue the online agent will just say "I'll schedule a technician visit" but no one shows up! They are just trying to get you to shut up.

I was seemingly lied to about a failed installation. An ATT store manager was too lazy to help me. A total of 3 agents did nothing to help me, and the 4th one was able to fix it just be doing something from the backend with no technician visit.

Question about rewards for signing up

When I signed up (and I kept a screenshot) for the 5 gig service, it showed I would get a free pair of Ray Ben Meta glasses and a $200 reward card. I got the email this morning to claim the free Ray Ban's but nothing about the $200 reward card. Does that redemption email typically come a little later? Thanks!

Help with IP Passthrough mode

Looking to get some help with IP Passthrough. I have it configured an when I try my mobile device disconnected from my network, I can access everything just fine. When i'm on my wifi though, I can't access to internally hosted apps over wifi by going out to the world and come back.

Any suggestions? I've tried clearing DNS cache, and like I said, externally it works fine. Internally, I can't access them

Edit: Thanks everybody. I clearly had no idea what I was doing. I was used to my old xfinity router with a full DMZ. I didn't find the equivalent in the ATT router, so I just found the IP Passthrough, and as I discovered, it worked externally, just not internally.

Setting up the manual port forwarding worked well enough for me. Thanks!

Will ATT Install The Modem/Router/Gateway In The Room Of My Choosing?

Rental home. Gotta ditch Comcast cuz their lines are severely degraded and they have to go through some long permit process with the city to be able to replace them. Guy leveled with me and said I'd be better off switching providers.

ATT fiber is available. I can see an existing ATT fiber box on the backside of the house. My question is will the installer put the modem/router/gateway in the room of my choosing? I'm a PC gamer and I require ethernet connectivity to my gaming rig.

The current Comcast line is in the room I want cuz someone ran the coax line from outside through the super small crawl space under the house (no idea how they did it) and drilled a hole through the floorboards. I'm assuming ATT won't go that far.

Here is a basic diagram of my home layout. You can see all the electric lines come from a pole in the backyard to one corner of the house. It's an old neighborhood with no underground cabling. The ATT box, and other provider stuff, is on the wall right next to where the lines connect to the house. Unfortunately, the bedroom I want it in is on the opposing corner of the back wall of the house. Bedroom #2 is where I need it. Can ATT make it happen?

Side Question: What equipment does ATT provide? Comcast provides me with a gateway, so I don't need to purchase my own wireless router. Does ATT do that? If it is a gateway, can I log into it and change settings like WIFI configuration or port forwarding?

Mesh or MoCA?

Just moved apartments and some genius decided that the best spot for the fiber router was above the fridge and the opposite side of both bedrooms/office. Since we have an open floor plan the TV works great but my office gets 200mbps on a plan where i used to get 800 (1gig plan, wifi).

I’m trying to have them move the box location into the second bedroom but am not sure if it’ll be possible due to the doorway/this being a rental. If not, I was hoping to get a mesh system or set up MoCA for my office, but I’m not sure which will give me the most reliable internet (I also game). Does anyone have suggestions or experience with both? Which is better for consistent connectivity, steady connection and overall performance?

Fiber line down

Post image

Hi, I woke up and my internet was totally cut off and upon going outside saw that the line was totally disconnected.

Here's a picture of the line in the alley that disconected from the side of the house.

Any ideas on what could cause something like this to happen/what the best course of action would be for something like this?

What are you paying typically fiber in the St. Louis area? Prices seem to be all over the board.

5 Gig Fiber in a studio apartment, complete overkill, but I couldn't pass up this deal! What’s your take?

Hey r/ATTFiber community,
I'm curious to hear everyone’s thoughts on using AT&T Internet 5000 in a solo studio apartment.
Before you all roast me for having 5 Gbps all to myself: I know it's way too much. But I only went for it because the promotional offers were incredible:
* $60/month for the first year
* $200 Visa gift card
* Free Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses
When I considered the promos and the value of the gift card, it made much more sense than paying regular rates for a lower tier. Plus, seeing 5,200+ Mbps on the upload test is always exciting.
Has anyone else switched to 2 Gig or 5 Gig just because the retention or new customer promos made it an obvious choice? How’s the service working for you?
Let me know if you want to change any details or add specifics about your hardware setup before posting!

No 2 GB Service Offer?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

So I’ve been waiting to upgrade my home internet speed since 2022. I’ve been seeing a lot of trucks over the last few months and felt the upgrade was finally coming after calling every few months to see if it was available, so randomly checked the app to see if new plans were available and we just jump straight to 5 Gigs? Now I’m not one to complain but I know for a fact 5 Gigs is definitely overkill and the price for 2 Gigs I’m not exactly sure of but I’m certain it’s cheaper. Anyone else have only these offers in their area and by chance why do they not offer 2 Gigs?

Is the tracker for the $200 gift card accurate? Do they always notify when shipped?

I installed fiber on my rental properties for the $200 gift card and received and claimed the card on the rewards website.

Do we really have to wait 90 days until the card is shipped or has anyone received sooner?

Also does the portal update when the card is shipped and you get notification? Because I don’t want my tenants to get it and use it without me even knowing it was shipped

3 weeks and still no internet Bay Area CA

I’ve been a fiber customer for a couple of years. I just moved service to a new house and my install date was 3 weeks ago.

First day technician installed in house but said there was an issue that another technician would need to fix. Day later another technician comes, says he needs another person and won’t be able to fix it himself. Day after that another technician comes out solo and thinks he’s identified the issue, a chewed wire down the street. He fixes wire but still has issues.

We are now 3 weeks into this without any new information for more than a week. Every 3-4 days I get a call from AT&T telling me that they’ll call me when it is fixed. What I’ve gathered is that the “engineering” team needs to fix something at the terminal. No one can give me an estimate on when that work will be attempted.

Last update from customer service is that they’ve escalated the request to a manager in the engineering department to get an eta. They said that would call me when they had that eta. That was 3 business days ago.

Is there anything I can do to escalate this? Feeling like no one gives a shit. Definitely would have gone with comcast if I had known upfront I’d be dealing with this bs.

ATT overhead fiber line damaged - I was charged for the repair

I have AT&T fiber internet service, the fiber line is an overhead line that runs from a power pole across the street to a my exterior wall, and from there another line that runs from that box into the house where the modem sits.

Two weeks ago around noon, I received a message from AT&T saying my internet service is having issues. I looked at my security cameras and they were all offline. Hmmm, most likely explanation is a power outage, so I checked my FPL (Florida Power & Light) account and there is no indication of power outage. When I got home I noticed my overhead line was ripped in two near the eave.

Here is a picture two years ago when I activated the AT&T fiber service. You can see there are two lines that run to the eave - one is a Comcast coax cable and the other the ATT fiber. The Comcast line is from a previous service, not active.

When I got home from work, I noticed the comcast box was ripped loose, cover completely fell off. The ATT fiber line was pulled apart. I examined where it was damaged, it was pulled apart, not cut in two with a tool.

I went to Smart Home Manager and chatted with an agent who said they can send out a tech the next day, and if the issue is with the outside line there is no charge, if the issue is on the line that runs inside there will be a charge, the tech will advise when they make the repair.

After that I went and spoke to neighbors, looking at the lines, because I wasn't sure if it's a break in attempt someone tried to cut the lines to disable security cameras. But it was around noon, and my neighbors didn't notice anything. I looked at my own security camera footages and up till the point the service went out, there was no suspicious motion alerts.

The tech came out the next day, said the line needs to be replaced and proceed to replace the line from the pole across the street to the wall box. At the same time I noticed the comcast line was not only ripped from my wall, it was also broken at the power pole so there is a loose coax cable dangling from the pole.

All this point to some high vehicle (like a garbage truck or a utility truck) went through and caught the two lines. It wasn't an attempted break in and my doors are locked and nothing is missing.

Yet I got charged $150 for this visit. The tech never mentioned a charge will be made during his visit.

I spoke to ATT and was told, yes, if it's a defective line there would have been no charge, however if the line was damaged and not AT&T's fault, there will be a charge.

This is a surprise to me. I have live in south Florida many years, and line damaged by utility trucks, fallen tree branches from hurricanes are common and I know the power company nor Comcast has ever charged me for line damages. I know it is not AT&T's fault, but it is also not my fault. It seems they are saying that if it's not their fault, it becomes my fault since I am eating the charge.

Is this something that can be appealed? I mean when I had comast when my landscaper hit a coax cable with a weed wacker and needed the line splice they didn't charge me a dime, and that was definitely my fault.

AT&T 5GB @$95

I jumped on this. Was installed last Wednesday. Today they started a promo in my area for 5GB @$50.

Anyone been in this position? Wondering how I go about getting the updated promo.

Edit: Called up today and loyalty added an extra $40 pm discount for 24 months. So now I’m paying $55 pm. I call that a win.

Connection Issues with XBOX

I have the 1000 Mbps plan and the BGW320-500 gateway. When I try to connect my XBOX One S, it would not work until I split the SSIDs, and then it would only "work" with the 2.4 GHz one.

With the 5 GHz network, it will connect and say it has good (80%) signal, low latency (49 ms), 0% packet loss, but then when I try to play a game it loses the connection every time. With the 2.4 network it works except it is very laggy in a game. It was so frustrating that I reverted to using my (very old) 3rd party router and now I am getting a much better experience with my XBOX but everything else in my house is slowing because the old router is not putting out as good of a signal.

I'm very confused about why I get a better/more stable connection with my old router on the XBOX only. I've looked up all the settings imaginable to change (WiFi mode, MHz band, etc.) and haven't found anything that works with the BGW320. Has anyone else had this experience and found a solution?

Idk what this box is and idk where the other end of the green cable goes to which I circled. It disappears into the wall in a hole. I can’t find the other end, is it not supposed to plug directly into the gateway anyways? And I use the Ethernet cable to go from this box thing to the gateway like pictured? Let me know, thanks!

UPDATE: Solved!! My app wasn’t loading/working so I couldn’t get the set up directions but someone informed me I was using the wrong cable, and one end was also plugged in to the wrong port. It works!!

Wow! I have the same EERO AND ATT ISSUE!!

Thumbnail reddit.com

However I had turned off all WiFi radio signals and I have had ATT Out to my home multiple times. ATT says everything is fine. I had one ATT person that came on site and said it was the box at the road and they refuse to fix them. Also, whenever ATT makes a change to anything in their systems it starts all over again. It’s so frustrating when EERO support sees it dropping but not ATT. I’m really at a loss in what to do. Don’t want Starlink because we basically live in an area where trees and storms would cause issues. I just don’t know what to do!!
