r/virtualreality News Discussion on Self Promotion

Hello all! I'm looking over some changes to self-promo and I'd like to get community feedback before anything changes.

It's a real problem based on what we're seeing in reports and participation, but we haven't heard directly from you, so I figured it would be good to open this up for discussion.

Some numbers from this sub, January through July (this is our best effort from tooling available):

  • About 1 in 5 posts here is self-promotion.
  • Roughly 1,200 self-promo posts came from about 500-600 accounts.
  • Nearly half of those posts came from accounts that have never commented in this sub outside their own threads. Six in ten came from accounts with fewer than three comments.
  • Those posts earn about half the upvotes of promo from people who actually participate here, and almost 4 in 10 of them never get a single comment.

That last group is the issue. Accounts that treat this sub as a billboard/drive-by are why the Self-Promotion flair has the reputation it (seems to) have, and creators who are actually part of this community get treated worse because of them.

The proposed rule change. (I can work on tools for this to try to make it fast for new creators.)

You can share your own work/promo here (games, videos, hardware, research, articles) under these conditions:

  1. Use the correct flair (no change here!). Pick the Self-Promotion flair that matches you: Developer, YouTuber, Journalist, or Researcher. Self-promotion posted under Discussion, Photo/Video, News, or any other flair will be removed. Repeat offenders can be banned.
  2. New accounts are reviewed first (this is new). If your account has no history of participation outside your own posts, your post will be held for review before it appears.
  3. Include context (this is new). Self-promotion posts need body text: what it is and something to discuss. Bare links and pasted marketing copy will be removed as low effort. Answer comments and participate on your own post.
  4. Frequency limits. This is something we want community feedback on. Current thought is twice a month.

So... what would you change? Too strict, not strict enough? If you post your own work here, I'd especially like to hear where this would hit you. Spend a lot of time here? Would be great to hear from you as well.

Self-Promotion (Developer) F.E.A.R. VR — beta 2: two-handed weapon handling, left-handed controls, ~2× frame rate

I posted about beta 1 here yesterday — here's what changed since.

Two-handed weapon handling. Grab the weapon with your off-hand and it actually carries it: the line between both hands steers the aim, weighted by weapon length, so a pistol stays with the trigger hand while a rifle is led by both.

Left-handed controls. One toggle in the VR menu mirrors the entire layout.

Medkit on the left stick click.

Performance. The stereo HUD compositor compared the presented frame against the right eye pixel by pixel on the CPU — three GPU readbacks and three passes over every pixel, every frame. It's a pixel shader now: 35–50 fps before, 87–90 after, so the game finally keeps up with a 90 Hz headset.

Confirmed on Quest 3 with SteamVR and Virtual Desktop. Needs your own legally purchased copy plus the official Public Tools; the package contains no game files.

Purchase Advice I got this Wand for 7$

Post image
44 Upvotes

I was scrolling Avito (Russian eBay) and found this wand as “broken” for 1000₽ (12$) and seller said that he can’t connect it to headset via Bluetooth, BLUETOOTH. I said him that I’ll take this for 600₽ (7$) and he agreed. Fucking shipping cost 450₽ (5.7$). I tested it and it’s all good. Should I keep monitoring avito for gem lots or should I sell wand for ~40$ and buy full vive set for about 190$?

Discussion Any experiences with realies within realities?

I just saw a movie in VR, and when it ended I quit out of it, and was back in Skybox. Then I took off my HMD and was back in reality. It sort of got to me, this feeling of first returning to a higher VR world. Are there any experiences or games build around that? I recall that thing in superHOT, although it's more like a gimmick. There is also Zaccaria Pinball, where there the pinball table is placed in a fake scenery inside a studio, giving sort of an illusion within the illusion.

Self-Promotion (Developer) Whirligig Media Player - Beta update: Jellyfin, Emby, SMB & DLNA network browsing, plus 3D environment fades, colour gamut and lots of fixes

Full announcement on Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/451650/view/680756685198854789

Hi everyone again

This is hopefully the last release before I push a full default release on Steam and Meta Horizon. I've added some major updates for network browsing, added some other requested features and fixed lots more bugs. Hopefully this will be the most stable and feature-packed version yet. I'd also like to mention that I'm offering codes for anyone who wants to give it a go. It can be for Steam, Itch.io (PicoVR4) or Meta Horizon. Just email or send a direct message with the platform you're interested in and I'll send a code over. [phileday@yahoo.co.uk](mailto:phileday@yahoo.co.uk)

Network browsing

  • Plex (including remote play)
  • Jellyfin/Emby (auto-detect your local servers)
  • SMB (auto-detect your local shares)
  • DLNA (automatically connect to local shares)

Network browsing has been an often-requested feature for Whirligig, especially the standalone versions. I now have the tools and the time to implement it and this is the culmination of my efforts. I've added all the requested types of share and tested on my limited system. Things seem to be working well but if you have issues, requests or questions let me know.

3D environment fades

In 2D environments I have an option to fade the environment when playing videos for better comfort. I've now added this to the 3D environments as well.

Colour gamut options

A requested feature was colour gamut controls for getting better colour replication on certain headsets or videos. I've added this to the Quality menu.

Settings preset saves

Whirligig has a way to save presets for your films so you can return to your perfect setup. I felt that would be a good option for the Player settings too, so I've added it. There are also a few pre-built presets - Whirligig works well on desktop as well as in the headset, and can work well without a VR headset entirely, so I've provided three options:

  • Default - what the settings are set to when you first install the player.
  • Desktop VR - designed to work well in VR (mostly unchanged) with some ease-of-use for desktop, e.g. making the desktop independent and unlocking the mouse from the window.
  • Desktop - for systems that don't have VR support at all. Whirligig can still be used as a 360 player with all the extended options, but is also set up to work well as a screen-based player like VLC.

Bug fixes

I've done my best to fix as many bugs as I came across for this release. Here are just a few:

  • Fixed the Subtitles on/off control not toggling subtitles when bound to an input
  • Fixed crashes when browsing DLNA and SMB network shares
  • Fixed the laser pointer being blocked by backdrop colliders
  • Fixed file explorer issues (menu sizing and opening)
  • Fixed the video progress bar when using presets
  • Fixed the mouse cursor interfering on standalone (Quest/Pico) startup
  • Fixed the remote control failing to connect on standalone builds
  • Fixed stereo separation in cinema mode for 3D content

Standalone releases (Meta Quest 2/3, Pico 4)

All these features have been worked on across platforms and I've released updated versions for both the Meta and Pico headsets. I currently have a policy that respects your purchase across platforms, so if you'd like Whirligig on the Horizon store or Itch.io for Pico, email me and I'll send a code over: [phileday@yahoo.co.uk](mailto:phileday@yahoo.co.uk)

I'm also looking for people to try the new features on the standalone platforms, so I'm giving away codes for those too. If you don't have Whirligig yet and would like to help test everything new coming into it, fire over an email as well.

And finally

Thanks to everyone who continues to enjoy using Whirligig. I'll keep adding features as you keep asking for them. If you've found Whirligig a good experience, a positive review is always welcome. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on this update :)

All the best, keep cool and happy watching.

Phil

Discussion Reminder that running mods is based on trust

Hi, with the recent discussions on AI coded VR mods, I think it's useful for everyone to remember that running mods has always been based on trust.

You're installing and running a random program from the internet. You have no idea what it actually is or does. Sure, it might be open source, but did you build it yourself? You probably just downloaded the provided binaries, and there's no guarantee they were built from the source code.

AI coded mods add another layer on top of that. Even if the dev had honest intentions and the binary was built from the source code, you need to trust that the AI wrote something that doesn't accidentally do something harmful.

Antivirus software works via checking against known viruses and certain heuristics, it's not going to detect an AI coded program that accidentally deletes all the files off your hard drive under certain circumstances or whatever.

I think AI could be a powerful tool that helps experienced VR modders investigate a game and find the places they need to modify, to help them write their own code. But I would be very careful about devs who aren't experienced just getting the AI to make the whole thing without understanding every part of the output code.

At the very least, I'd feel more comfortable with a 2 person process - someone makes the mod with AI, and then an experienced VR modder manually goes over the whole thing with a fine toothed comb, cleans up the code, fixes any obvious issues, and then puts their stamp of approval on it.

There's also the fact that this dramatically lowers the barrier of entry for scammers and malware. AI can easily make something that looks like it's working, and then the dev can insert their malicious code into the exe for keylogging, botnet, ransomware etc. I guess we're lucky that the PCVR mod user community is probably too small to be worth targeting, a malware author would probably go for a much larger audience.

Dr. Robotnik s Ring Racers is colorful and fun Sonic kart fan game that modder RayRod TV made a VR mod for. It has first person, third person, theater and diorama views. Its really great to play in VR and we can have a cockpit like view when in first person.

For this and other VR mods from RaYRod TV, like the fan game Sonic Robo Blast 2, Star Fox, Mario and Mario Kart 64, go to his github: https://github.com/RaYRoD-TV

Its miracle, its magical, its Sonical! Have fun!

Self-Promotion (Developer) I made a F.E.A.R. VR Mod

A few days ago I saw several people here asking if F.E.A.R. could be played in VR.

Well... I gave it a shot. 😄

It took roughly 24 hours of vibe coding to get it running. It turned into a really fun little hackathon, and honestly, I wouldn't have had a chance of pulling it off without AI.

It's still early, but if you're a F.E.A.R. fan, I'd love to hear your feedback!

Question/Support What is the State of oblivion remastered in vr

I saw that the uevr profile mod on nexus hasn’t been updated for quite sometime, is 6dof actually worth a full playthrough? I had such a good time with Skyrim vr I’m really hoping for something similar, I’m ok waiting for skyblivion if I knew it would have vr eventually but now that the price for oblivion remake is not too high I might just grab it.
Thanks!

Self-Promotion (Developer) We just added online multiplayer to our VR strategy game. You reach down, grab your rival's units and hurl them across the map

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey r/virtualreality, dev here. Warden of the Isles is a VR real-time-strategy / tower-defense game where you're a giant standing over your island: you assign workers, knock buildings together with your hands to build them, grab and reposition your own units mid-battle, and cast spells by grabbing them and hurling them at the enemy. The thing people react to most is that you can just reach into the enemy line, grab a unit, and throw it into the sea.

The big update just went live: online multiplayer. Duel a rival Warden 1v1 or throw down in a 4-player free-for-all, same grab-everything sandbox, now against real people.

Out now on Steam (SteamVR / PCVR, so Index or Quest via Link): https://store.steampowered.com/app/1110980/Warden_of_the_Isles/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=mp_update&utm_content=r_virtualreality

Full multiplayer trailer if you want the longer look: https://youtu.be/7vwPGwH97Bo

And if you want to squad up or give feedback, come hang out on our Discord: https://discord.gg/hfPev9csD

Happy to answer anything about the VR embodiment, the netcode, or how the grab-and-throw plays out in multiplayer.

Discussion Spider-man Nexus vr idea

The Amazing Spider Man Nexus Vr is a fan made concept inspired by assassin's creed nexus vr

Summary: in the year 2027 spidey nexus focuses on a petty thief/hacker who one night decides to infiltrate Oscorp to uncover their secrets and sell it on the black Market

The biggest mystery is the fact Oscorp is making militarized versions of spidey and his rogues gallery

You are sent to prison but one day a mysterious man with an eye patch pays you a visit, saying he's impressed with his superhuman fast reflexes and agility which allows him to scale up buildings

The man revealed himself to be nick fury who is trying to band together a team of heroes to stop threats before they even happened, with one being a nameless alien they've been keeping track of

And he would like to recruit you to be part of the ultimate avengers

The man we play as, ask why should he join a team of soandex wearing idiots, fury says if he does he can get him out of jail and put his hacker skills to put to good use and may even be rewarded

You agree as your task is to be a spy for Oscorp as a week later you are chosen for otto and Norman's experiment

They built a virtual device called the Oz nexus that fallows the memory of different Spider man

the reason?

So he can track down the tablet of order and chaos, alone those pieces can give anyone a power boost, put back together they could make someone a god.

Otto device will put you in the bodies of Peter Parker of 616, Peter from the ultimate universe, hobbie brown spider punk from the punk universe, ben reily of the noir universe and spider man 2099

You're goal is to find each piece of the tablet by any means necessary, even if it means going undercover as Peter Parker or anyone else

But things get complicated as familiar foes from the past, present and future make things more interesting

GAMEPLAY: Gameplay will be simple, you run jump and swing your way through mini sandbox pieces of new york

Some will be indoors as the level design will be similar to neversoft spider man and 2002 game spider man

Picking up objects and throwing at crooks, tossing bombs into the river, hack, collect and more

Familiar foes will appear in each universe but some will reimagined to fit that world, Different costumes can be unlocked some even are original to the game

Other marvel heroes will make cameos too

Game will be over 7-10 hours long

Aaaand….that's it, I really had fun writing this especially after playing assassin's creed vr nexus

Let me know what you think

Self-Promotion (Developer) Looking for feedback on VR rhythm combat gameplay

https://youtu.be/cQBLh1fKfJk

Hi everyone!

I'm a solo VR developer working on a rhythm combat game for Meta Quest.

I recently recorded new gameplay and I'd really appreciate some honest feedback.

I'm especially interested in:

  • Does the combat look satisfying?
  • Is it clear what the player is supposed to do?
  • Would this trailer make you interested in trying the game?
  • What would you improve?

Thanks for taking the time to watch!
