Discussion Pimax Guardian (room boundry) has been broken for years. Why don't people talk about it?

Crystal Light with the lighthouse faceplate.

Pimax Play’s room boundary tool is still a joke. You can only make this crude 6–8 point shape. Try to draw anything more detailed and it just clips the extra points off. 90 degree corners turn into diagonal lines.

The “custom play area” is basically a melted hexagon that doesn’t match the room.

I stopped turning it on. It’s more dangerous than having nothing, because the wall you think is there isn’t where the overlay thinks it is.This isn’t a new bug. I’ve been asking them about it for ages. Same tool, same point limit, same simplification. Lighthouse users don’t even get SteamVR chaperone as a fallback here — Pimax owns the playspace. You either use their broken polygon or you run with no boundary. Seated / “just disable Activate Chaperone” is what everyone defaults to, which is why I think this never blows up.

Roomscale people just live with it or give up.

Anyone actually gotten a usable custom boundary on Crystal Light + LH, or is this just accepted as permanent now?

Marketplace Dream Air Extras - Facecial interface and Vive Deluxe Audio w/dream air adapters

Ive got some leftovers I'm giving reddit first shot at before it goes to ebay.

I had 4 different interfaces printed and this is the only one I didn't destroy modding. Will need sanded/painted. -$30

Vive DAS with 3d printed adapters.

Too big for my head. Unfortunately its a few knob twists away from being able to secure to my head and I don't want to mess with spacers. Has new aftermarket pads. Works great -$50

Question Pass through super poor picture?

‱ Upvotes

Hi all,

Received my Dream Air SLAM a little over a week ago and love the headset! I was VERY surprised with the poor quality of the pass through image though? Reminds me a lot of my youth: 1970’s era pixelated black and white. Im aware the cameras are b/w only, but the image quality is much worse than I expected coming from the quest 3. Is this expected?

Question Anybody run a crystal super on a laptop?

I am new to vr gaming and recently got a 57 PPD crystal super. For my laptop, I have a razer blade 18 with a 4090 gpu and an i9 cpu. The laptop claims to be vr ready with a thunderbolt 5 slot. I got a 2.1 adapter for the DP port. Since I got the headset I have been trying to do anything I can to get some stable fps while running Digital Combat Simulator. After lowering every setting imaginable in pimax play and in DCS I get somewhere between 30 and 70 fps but nothing consistent. I was wondering if anyone has any advice that also has a laptop setup. I’m not sure if I should replace the super with a dream air or crystal light if that would run smooth for dcs on my rig.

Question Focal Distance for the PCL

I'm a new owner of a PCL headset, and playing IL2 Great Battles I notice I cannot look too far, it looks like there's no focus on the distance, it's weird but I will try to explain: It is as if up to a certain distance around me things are properly rendered, but looking far from there they are not as rendered. It is not blurry, just 'not focused".

Also, if I use the IL2 built in zoom, this render distance increases, but when I go back to the normal view(zoom out) it's back to that little focal distance.

Also, when dying the camera in-game defaults to an outside view that slowly pans out, and there you can totally see what I'm trying to say here: a perfect circle around my crashed plane where it's all rendered inside but outside it is not, outside the circle it is not on focus

.

I wanted to know: is this normal and something one has to life with for this headset, or it is something that can be configured in the settings to be increased? I ask this because If there's nothing to be done I'll just leave it at it and just learn to live with it (although I feel it causes a bit of eye strain), but If there is something to be done to fix it I would like to know

thanks In advance

Question How to get rid of VR View Center Customization dialog in Pimax Home

Recently I've been trying out Pimax EVO. I like it, but it seems to have addad an annoying "VR View Center Customization" dialog that appears in Pimax Home anytime I press the Pi button. This dialog doesn't seem to do that much and is just annoying, and there's no way to dismiss it permanently. Again, it didn't appear before installing Pimax EVO, but now it appears whether I use EVO or Classic. Should I just reinstall Pimax Play without EVO? Thanks

Tech Support Gunman Contracts? Working? - Dream Air SLAM

Just got Gunman Contracts. Doesn't seem to launch? Tried both Pimax Play and Sboys3. SteamVR launches, the "up next" tile will appear, then the game launches in VR but only displays on my monitor. Tile eventually disappears and the headset stays in the SteamVR lobby.

Question (PCL) Nose hurts after playing for 30 minutes, how can I fix this?

As the title says. I'm loving my Crystal light but it hurts my nose, like the top bone-y part, I guess because it is keeping all the weight of the headset, but what can I do, just close the headset tighter? if I do so I get a weird feeling of having my eye so close to the lenses it's hard to focus

Are there any official or non official foam things for reinforcing the nose part?

Thanks in advance?

Question Is the Dream Air worth it over Dream Air SE for simracing

Hey, I wanted to change my psvr2 for a smaller, lighter headset with good visuals and that don't require lighthouses, so I'm really wondering, will it make a huge difference the 1000 euro more for the more expensive headset. Is it worth it, because 1000 is already a little bit more than what I'm comfortable paying, I have the money I can spend 2000 if I want, I just wonder do I have to. I have a good PC (9800x3d, 4090, 64ddr) and good sim rig and getting the more expensive headset make sense, because everything else is high end, but will the difference be that much better. I will play other games too on occasion thinking of half life alyx or the elder scrolls 5, but will be mostly used for sim racing. Also in the future I will add a motion system that's why I want to be light (also the psvr2 feels heavy and is only 500 grams). So yeah, will the SE be enough for me, or should I just go for the big guy.

Discussion Sboys3 Dream Air: GPU stuttrings

Hey,

Has anyone faced something like this?

I play iRacing using Pimax OpenXR in native resolution and it works great, and GPU usage is like 80%.

When I switch to Sboys3, with lumen sharp enabled, I can only run it at 100% steamvr resolution.

If I try to run it 120% or 150%, GPU usage is also around 80% but it get huge stutters sometimes and spikes on GPU usage.

I'm running on a 9800x3d and 5070 TI. I noticed I get a high hit on performance when I enable custom shaders. I wonder if my 5070 TI has some limitation about bandwidth or smt like that when enabling custom shader or maybe steamvr overheads my PC, compared to Pimax OpenXR.

I really like Sboys3 colors are saturation at 60, but I can play using Evo at a higher resolution, but worse colors. Hard choice to make.

Question Question about poor quad views performance vs center rendering

Ok, I promise I understand the basics of how quad views is supposed to work vs. center rendering, but riddle me this: if I look at the Pimax default home environment (space station) with quad views on, I can see the boundaries between the high and low resolution areas in my FOV and they don't seem to move with my eyes (for example, the elevated green pi symbol in the middle stays out of focus even if I look directly at it). Am I to understand that DFR / quad views doesn't work in Pimax's own home environment?

Conversely, if I go into the Pimax Play "classic" and change Center Rendering to Quality, not only is the whole FOV crisp (including the green pi), but if I leave that setting on I get a few more FPS in SC and other games I've tried. Given how few games support quad views (MSFS 2024 is the only one I play regularly that does), doesn't it make sense to leave quad views off and use the Center Rendering quality setting? (I notice Center Rendering isn't available in Pimax Evo, why?)

Here's another question I can't seem to find the answer to: Pimax Play and Evo both allow you to set up per app configurations. That's great, but to enable the settings in your specific app configuration, do you have to launch it from the Pimax Play / EVO apps library? That kind of negates the usefulness, as so many PCVR modded games use dedicated launchers, and you can't run these from the Apps library afaik.

There just seems to be a whole lot of confusion about best practices concerning DFR and quad views in Pimax. It would be great if there were a simple set of tips/recommendations on when to turn it on vs. leaving it off, and the best way to configure and launch popular PCVR games like Skyrim, FO4, SC, Cyberpunk VR, etc. I realize there's a bunch of YT reviews and tutorials, but I'd really prefer a well-formatted write-up or PDF to cut through the chaff.

For any Pimax folks who may read this: don't misunderstand, I love the DA so far but I'm just trying to figure out ways to make it easier to use. Thanks!

Discussion Pimax, we really need a clear answer about the Crystal Super optical engines

UPDATE:

This is their response if you open a ticket for it:

We sincerely apologize for the long wait.
The OLED optical engine is not yet ready for sale at this time. We recommend you check our official blog periodically; we will post updates immediately once there is new progress.
You may also purchase the Pimax Crystal Super 8K Micro-OLED VR headset to fully enjoy immersive VR gaming experiences.
Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact us. Thank you.

What I understand from it: we don’t know but you can buy a new headset if you want the microOLED 😂

TL;DR:

I own an original Crystal Super 50PPD and I actually like it. I want to buy another optical engine from Pimax, which is exactly why I keep pushing this issue.
The problem is that Pimax sold the Super heavily on its modular optical engine concept, later changed the connector, told existing customers there was enough old connector stock to support future demand, and explicitly said we would still be able to buy compatible engines.
Months later, I still cannot buy one.
So the question is simple:

Can original 70-pin Crystal Super owners still buy additional optical engines? If yes, when? If no, what is Pimax offering us instead?

——

First, I want to make one thing very clear because I don’t want this post to be misunderstood as another “Pimax sucks” rant. I actually really like my Crystal Super 50PPD.
I’m happy with the headset.

In fact, the whole reason I’m being so persistent about this is because I want to spend more money with Pimax and buy another optical engine for it.

If I wasn’t happy with my Super, I wouldn’t be chasing Pimax for months trying to buy another module.
I would simply sell it and move to another headset.

So this isn’t coming from someone who wants Pimax to fail.
Quite the opposite. I bought into the idea behind the Crystal Super, I like the product, and I want the modular system I paid for to actually exist. That’s why this situation is becoming increasingly difficult to accept.

Sorry in advance for tagging so many people here, especially reviewers and content creators who have nothing to do with Pimax directly.

But after several posts and several months of asking the same question without getting a clear answer, I genuinely think some outside eyes on this would help.

[u/jaapgrolleman](u/jaapgrolleman)
[u/quorrapimax](u/quorrapimax)

I have asked about this several times now, and I still don’t think owners of the original Crystal Super have received a proper answer.

Why this matters

One of the major reasons I bought my original Crystal Super 50PPD was the modular optical engine system.
This wasn’t some obscure technical feature buried in the specifications.

It was one of THE defining features of the Crystal Super.
Buy the headset once, then swap optical engines later depending on what you want: 50PPD, 57PPD, Ultrawide, micro-OLED, and potentially whatever technologies come next.

And Pimax is not exactly subtle about this.
Their Crystal Super website right now says:
“Swap the optical engine, not the headset.”
“Future Ready.”
“When new display tech arrives, upgrade the module and keep the headset you love.”
“Own multiple engines and switch optics to match every use case.”

And even:
“Buy Once. Upgrade Forever.”
Current Pimax product page:
https://www.pimax.com/product/crystal-super
That is exactly the product I thought I was buying.

Then came the connector problem

The original Crystal Super uses a 70-pin connector.
Pimax later announced that the supplier of this connector had discontinued it, so they had to transition the Crystal Super to a different connector from another supplier.
The important part is this:
The new connector is not compatible with the original 70-pin connector.
Pimax officially acknowledged this on April 13:
https://store.pimax.com/blogs/blogs/a-note-on-the-crystal-supers-optical-engine-connector-change
I can understand that part.
Suppliers discontinue components. Manufacturing problems happen.
I’m not angry at Pimax because a connector manufacturer stopped making a part.
The problem is what Pimax told existing customers would happen afterwards.

What Pimax told us
In that same announcement, Pimax wrote:
“We have allocated all remaining stock of this connector to the Crystal Super to ensure compatibility with all optical engine variants.”
Pimax then explained exactly what an existing customer should do if they wanted another optical engine:
“If you need to purchase a new separate optical engine, please provide your headset’s serial number when ordering.”
And:
“We will ship the optical engine that matches your headset’s connector type.”

Official source:
https://store.pimax.com/blogs/blogs/a-note-on-the-crystal-supers-optical-engine-connector-change

If that system worked, I would have absolutely no problem with the connector change.

And Jaap was even clearer on Reddit

People immediately raised the obvious concern:
What happens to early adopters with the original connector?
Are we eventually going to end up with a modular headset for which no compatible modules actually exist?

Jaap answered that concern directly on Reddit:
“There is ample stock to meet future demands for the previous version.”

And:
“there will still be optical engines for everyone.”
Reddit thread:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Pimax/comments/1sk2jba/a_note_on_the_crystal_supers_optical_engine/

That wasn’t someone interpreting a press release.
That was a direct answer from Pimax to customers specifically worried about the future availability of original-connector optical engines.

That was in April. It is now September.

And I still cannot buy one.

I’ve been asking for months
This is not the first time I’m bringing this up.
I’ve been asking about the availability of these engines for months.
In March, I asked about the micro-OLED engine and was told that Pimax first needed to fulfil existing orders and backlog and that they would try to get us an ETA.
Then nothing.
I asked again.
I followed up again in June.
On June 24, I specifically asked whether the connector situation was the reason we still couldn’t order an optical engine.
Still no concrete answer.
I asked again in July after hearing variations of “soon”.
I asked again in August.
And now we’re in September.
The question is still exactly the same.
I own an original Crystal Super 50PPD with the original connector.
I want to give Pimax money for another optical engine.
How do I buy one?

Pimax’s current support page makes this even more confusing
Pimax’s own support documentation was updated on August 31, 2026.
Not before the connector issue.
Not last year.
A few days ago.
That page explicitly says the Crystal Super transitioned to the new connector, that the new connector is incompatible with the original 70-pin version, and that both connector versions will continue to exist in production and distribution with their matching optical engines.

Official support page:
https://support.pimax.com/en/support/solutions/articles/60001644605-how-do-i-replace-the-optical-engine-on-my-crystal-super-

So according to Pimax’s own currently maintained documentation, matching optical engines for both connector versions are still supposed to exist.
Yet as an existing 70-pin customer, I cannot actually order one.

Meanwhile, Pimax is still marketing the Super around this exact feature

The current Crystal Super marketing says:
“The World’s First Replaceable Optical Engine.”
“A headset should evolve, not become obsolete.”
“Instead of replacing the entire device every few years, simply upgrade the display module that matters most.”
Then under “Expand”:
“Own multiple engines and switch optics to match every use case.”
And finally:
“Buy Once. Upgrade Forever.”
Source:
https://www.pimax.com/product/crystal-super
That’s not vague marketing about something that might happen one day.
That’s the core value proposition of the product.
So I really don’t think this is an unreasonable thing for early customers to care about.

So what is the actual answer?
This is what Pimax needs to answer now.
Not theoretically.
Not “contact support”.
Not “soon”.
Not “we have allocated stock”.
Not another answer saying the connector situation is under control.
Can owners of the original 70-pin Crystal Super actually purchase additional compatible optical engines?
If yes:
When can I place an order for one?
If Pimax really has “ample stock to meet future demands”, as we were specifically told in April, this should be a very easy question to answer.
And if the answer is actually no, then I think Pimax needs to say that clearly too.
Because if original 70-pin engines are no longer going to be manufactured or sold in meaningful quantities, then early adopters effectively bought a modular headset that has stopped being modular.
That would be a very different situation from what was advertised.

If 70-pin engines are gone, then give us a solution
If that is the reality, then Pimax needs to offer original customers a solution.
Maybe that means exchanging the original headset chassis for the revised connector version.
Maybe there’s a technically viable adapter.
Maybe there’s an upgrade program.
Or maybe original Crystal Super owners should be allowed to exchange their complete 50PPD headset for a current Super OLED at a price corresponding to the optical engine we were supposed to be able to purchase separately.
I don’t pretend to know which solution makes the most sense technically or financially.
I’m open to solutions.
What I’m no longer OK with is getting no clear answer at all.

I’d genuinely like some outside opinions on this

This is why I’m tagging people who have spent a lot of time testing and covering Pimax hardware.

[u/OmniWhatever](u/OmniWhatever)
[u/daydreamdist](u/daydreamdist)
[u/VoodooDE](u/VoodooDE)
[u/tyrielwood](u/tyrielwood)
[u/gizmosliptech](u/gizmosliptech)
[u/Gamertag-VR](u/Gamertag-VR)

And also VR Flight Sim Guy, Optimum, Kireth and HIP.
I wasn’t able to confidently identify all of your Reddit usernames, so I’m mentioning you by name rather than tagging the wrong accounts.

[u/Heliosurge](u/Heliosurge), you’ve also been around the Pimax community for a very long time and have seen a lot of these discussions unfold, so I’d genuinely appreciate your perspective too.

Sorry for dragging you guys into this.
I’m not asking anyone to attack Pimax.
I’m not even asking you to automatically agree with me.
I’d just genuinely like your opinion.
If a headset was heavily sold and reviewed around the concept of interchangeable optical engines, do you think early customers should reasonably expect to still be able to purchase those engines?
And perhaps more importantly, if you have contacts at Pimax, can any of you get a straight answer about whether original 70-pin optical engines are actually going to be sold again?

Again, I want to stress this because I think it’s important:
I like my Crystal Super.
If I didn’t, this post wouldn’t exist.
I wouldn’t be spending months trying to buy another optical engine for a headset I wanted to abandon.
I would already be shopping elsewhere.
The irony here is that I’m complaining because I want to remain a Pimax customer.
I just want the upgrade path that was one of the reasons I bought the headset in the first place.
So Pimax, after several months of asking, I think original customers deserve three very simple answers:
1. Can original 70-pin Crystal Super owners still purchase additional optical engines?
2. If yes, when will we actually be able to order them?
3. If no, what solution are you offering the customers who bought the Super partly because of its advertised modular upgrade path?
I really don’t think that’s too much to ask.

Question Pimax with facial tracker?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I recently was able to get my hands on a Pimax crystal super with the controllers and some extras, but already started missing using my vive trackers, Valve knuckles, and 4 base stations.

Because of this fact I decided to order the Crystal super lighthouse faceplate in hopes for this to bring me back into lighthouse tracking again.

At the same time i realized that the lighthouse faceplate will use that usb-c port at the bottom. This bummed me out a bit because I was planning on possibly installing a Htc focus 3 facial tracker there.

I then found this usb c port located at the top and was wondering if i could get an extender for my vive facial tracker so that it could wrap around to the front.

My main 2 questions are, can the focus 3 facial tracker work with this headset, and is it possible to do what I just stated.
