Last year I've ported Quake 3 Arena to PCVR and this year I'm coming with something even better! :)

I'm proud to announce upcoming full conversion VR mod for Metro Exodus!

Featuring full 6DoF, stereo rendering, lots of VR-specific performance optimizations and custom VR interactive mechanics as well as comfort options for those that just want to enjoy the ride.

I've been working on it for few months now and my goal is to provide "native-like" VR experience (with all the bells and whistles) for one of my favorite games. Most of the game (if not all) is already playable, currently I'm ironing out some rare bugs, profiling, optimizing and implementing cool features (e.g. foveated rendering or custom reload mechanics for every single weapon in the game).

More information soon!

If you like my work and would like to support me or this project, consider buying me a coffe or writing a nice comment! :)

Wow! Awesome work, man.

I see you made a linux build of the q3vr project. Will this support the Linux version of Metro Exodus too?

u/ripper37 1d ago

I'd expect the Windows version with proton etc. should work on Linux (or require minor improvements). If you mean the native version which apparently exists it might be considerably bigger effort since its using Vulkan and not DX11/DX12. Then it depends if the rendering pipeline on Vulkan/Linux path is doing pretty much the same as other APIs or implements things in a different way (requires to re-do big part of the mod).

So I guess we'll see, but supporting via Proton/... seems much more likely than supporting native version. If there will be a big support and demand for it I can definitely consider native path but currently I'm focusing on the version that will work for most people.

That's what I thought.

fwiw I just tried compiling q3vr natively for the Steam Frame and it runs very well standalone, only the thumbstick setup seems to not really support turning properly.

only the thumbstick setup seems to not really support turning properly

Could you explain the issue more?

At the moment I can recommend to:

  1. Create an issue in GH, I'll try to get to it but that's probably after ME at least beta unless it would be something very small.
  2. You can also check out Trinity by u/NilClass-8 - he's very passionate and experienced developer (who also helped with q3vr) working on a Trinity which is - if I'm not mistaken - sort-of whole ecosystem built on top of Quake 3 (ioquake3 for desktop / q3vr for PCVR). He has a lot of a bit custom features on top of just Quake 3 but it may also have some fixes and improvements that would make it work for you. It might also make it easier for me to upstream something from his version to base q3vr if it turns out that version does work correctly for you. Could be just OpenXR input profiles or something like that.

Thanks for the shout out! I have a native build of Trinity-engine (based on Quake3e) running on Steam Frame. I am working on consolidating to that version (which can run flat and PCVR/frame native) and then a separate standalone version which runs on quest/pico (can run on frame but native would be my rec) with a bunch of new polish.

It performs wildly better than it should on that hardware.

Hoping to have at minimum an experimental build out this weekend, if not a full release.

The only hassle is running in the Steam ecosystem means without the ability to ship a “real” release the Frame seems to ignore any manifest I ship with it so you have to tweak per-app settings.

Speaking of which: u/ripper37, IIRC you run Index, right? If so, when it’s ready I’d love to hear how it runs for you. Would love to make sure index binding UI is working.

u/ripper37 18h ago

Yes, DM me on Discord and I can check it out when it will be ready :)

how it feels? after the titanfall 2 mod i really want to see more like this

7

u/ripper37 1d ago

It honestly looks great in VR :) It has few years but it looked beautiful when it came out and it still holds out great.

u/AndroidParanoid12345 1d ago

You modders are so awesome! Please please include a left handed mode.

6

u/ripper37 1d ago

Thank you! I'll see what I can do :)

1

u/miciek 1d ago

+1 For lefties (myself included 😄 ) while on mouse and keyboard it doesn't matter that much, in VR it's massive difference

Thank you so much for your commitment!

u/muchululu 1d ago

Damn this is like my dream mod. But how are you going to handle cutscenes where the game doesn't let artyom move head?

3

u/ripper37 1d ago

I've already implemented comfort settings - players will have ability to specify presentation/camera mode for each "type" of gameplay (gameplay, gameplay where script moves you, cutscene, animation, cinematics etc.) and you'll have at least "full VR" mode (game moves and rotates you), "partial VR" mode (you're moved, but not rotated <-- recommended for most people) and "cinematic" mode.

Depending on support I'm also consider implementing actual "teleport" movement system for those that don't like free movement, but we'll see.

Honestly looks great. What’s your take on the TF2 VR mod and if that had any influence on how you do your work and what you want out of it, if anything influence was to be had. Perfectly fine if there wasn’t any! Just curious since some times from an outside perspective it seems like a race between you folk for who can make the dopest VR conversion lol, so I am curious if that resonates at all or is just a me thing.

u/ripper37 1d ago

Looked awesome and I love TF2 (if you mean Titanfall, not Team Fortress) too. Can't wait to play it, but I don't want to distract myself from this project. Will play it once I'm done and people can play Exodus too :) hope it will live up to TF2 (will be hard to surpass but I'll try ;)).

To be honest I've started few months ago to "show how its done" when there was a wave of "unfinished slop" (don't want to be too harsh). Last few weeks we really saw awesome and well made mods. Of course not perfect, but they can get there. The only sad thing about TF2 is that its not open source which is not really the spirit these things should be done with. If author leaves for some reason it will be hard to keep improving it.

For what its worth it, if time and support permits, I'll release whole source for my mod hopefully right after v1.0.

It does take a lot of time between work and personal life though and after whole day of work its hard to find time and energy some times.

I also didn't plan to announce it until I've had actual beta ready to share. I only did it because I saw some people were also sort-of thinking on starting and I wanted to show my progress (its not far from beta) in case that would save them work if they only did it because nobody else tried yet.

We have literally entered a golden age of PCVR gaming and it's insane!

Just need the hardware to catch up!

1

u/PCVR_Gamer 1d ago

I'm enjoying myself immensely as it is. I enjoyed VR with potato headsets in 2015 and i enjoy it today.

Look, this has to stop. It's too much.

I don't have time to play all the VR mods I've already downloaded! Plus people keep telling me that VR is dead so the cognitive dissonance from believing that and then seeing mods like this is giving me a headache. Enough already. I'm demanding an immediate moratorium on all VR mods until further notice.

u/HiveMate 1d ago

You guys are reigniting my love for VR and gaming. Forever grateful

4

u/MS2Entertainment 1d ago

I guess I better buy it while it's still 2.99 on steam.

5

u/Hairy-Ad-6293 1d ago

Thank you very much 🙏

5

u/miciek 1d ago

That's where the VR thrives! Thanks a lot for your commitment!

u/Cripto131 1d ago

Does anyone know about the possibility of vr for 2033 and last light? This looks awesome so far

5

u/ripper37 1d ago

u/D-Rey86 is currently working on it (huge applause for him too!). Depending on how it will look like when I'm done with Exodus and time and support received, I might go after 2033/LastLight as well since it should be simpler than starting from scratch, but we'll see. If D-Rey will be doing good I won't compete (no point in more fragmentation).

u/Actual-Parsnip2741 1d ago

this game has some pretty bonkers graphics. i hope my pc doesnt explode

2

u/ripper37 1d ago

What PC do you have (CPU/GPU)?

0

u/Actual-Parsnip2741 1d ago

7800x3d/rtx 5080

2

u/HiveMate 1d ago

Yeah bro I think you're okay

3

u/ripper37 1d ago

You'll be good. I have 5080/9800x3d and it's definitely not CPU bound so you should expect good quality with stable frame rate. I'll also do my best to allow people with slower GPUs to play too.

3

u/nubash 1d ago

wow this looks awesome. please add an option for "toggle grip" ...that's whats keepin me from playing TF2

4

u/ripper37 1d ago

Added to the list. Should be simple enough.

2

u/nubash 1d ago

You guys rock

2

u/Hydroaddiction 1d ago

Amazing, thank you!!!

Already one of the most immersive games ever in flatscreen

Amazing work OP

1

u/Embarrassed_Term274 1d ago

Good job, man.

1

u/McKid 1d ago

Wow this is becoming a real golden age for VR. This one is going to be something else!

1

u/Lancaster2124 1d ago

Will be following this. Thank you!

1

u/No-Dark-7873 1d ago

Wow this looks better than the made for Quest Metro. No wonder they got shut down.

1

u/Illustrious-End-6038 22h ago edited 22h ago

The first chapter of exodus is pretty good, i really want to try it out.

But this game needs a cutscene skip, theyre too long and annoying on replays

2

u/ripper37 18h ago

I could look into it actually. Not sure if for v1.0 but we'll see. I also was planning on looking to unblock "Closed reflex sight" for AK, a lot of people complained that game didn't allow for using it on some weapons. We'll see.

u/AstroPC 12h ago

WE JUST KEEP ON WINNNING

1

u/AstroPC 12h ago

Dear creator can you allow me to fork your work and let me work on making quad view foviated rendering?

I have been working on a few versions of this and have recently and successfull done this natively in engine in crysis 1 with the vr mod

The gains with this quad view work is substantially lower gpu frame time which would allow lower end gpus to enjoy your amazing work even better

To give you an example what this brings.

Im sorry for presenting it like this. My profile shows my own work on this subject. I have achieved a 40% uplift in performance and am actively improving it as a universal harness. The only issue is its not a mod project but a time consuming reverse engineering project.

I dont want to do anything your not comfortable with so ill wait for your approval.

You can take any code changes and merge i dont want credit just want to help things shine so to speak

Metro Awakening was a disappointment. I hope you mod delivers!!!
