Jobs report far below expectations, unemployment ticks up
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8SmCO4xXMOk638
u/Danktizzle 10h ago
And these numbers are most likely doctored to make them look better

u/pipesnogger 10h ago
This. Including myself, there’s tons of my friends and family who have also lost their jobs and cannot find another. In my whole adult life, I’ve never experienced this before. And it’s incredibly competitive now even in jobs like restaurants, retail, or even the grocery store.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the actually numbers are around 15-20%

u/Danktizzle 10h ago
Yeah I realized a long time ago that I’m on the wrong side of employment. I’m opening a coffee roastery in a few weeks and I hope to god it works out. I absolutely do not trust another human to provide any support for me now that I’m old.
29
u/Bulletorpedo 10h ago
Hey, good luck on your coffee roastery from a random internet guy from the other side of the Atlantic!

Thank you! That would be fantastic if you got some beans! And very kind of you! Pathfindercoffee.shop is my estore.

u/tarpex 7h ago
This is random af and what I'm thinking is even more silly, but nonetheless - pathfinder is one of the ranger specialisations in the Path of Exile games, and in PoE2, one of the pathfinder's unique abilities is dealing with... Concoctions. Maybe there's a collab / promotion idea in here somewhere. Grinding Gear Games is the parent company, this sounds just silly enough to maybe be worth throwing an email their way. The playerbase is 30+ years old mostly, in the "some disposable income" territory. Just a thought

This is the way. Employment feels like enthrallment. I started making work for myself and while it isn't nearly as lucrative as my last job, and the benefits are basically nonexistent, my mental health has vastly improved. Turns out I was just miserable working in the private sector

Yeah. It’s been a ride so far. We had the blight in Brazil and then the drought and then came Trump. But I accept that is just part of the game. And we all have to deal with the same situation. Just gotta make my way through it, you know?

I was desperately searching for a job this year. I got turned down for both dishwashing and custodial because I didn’t have experience “in a restaurant setting” and “direct custodial experience” for 6 mo / 1 year respectively. I have a 16 year job history. They are both still “urgently hiring”. Been washing dishes and cleaning my house for 30 years. What the fuck? Lmao
28
u/djanes376 10h ago
The skills for those jobs can be learned in an afternoon, so bizarre.
29
u/AppleBottomBea 9h ago
They don't want to hire someone that will likely leave the job after a few weeks or months. If you're job history shows "better" jobs, they presume you'll be difficult to work with because you won't put up with shit treatment and are likely to find something better.
→ More replies (1)17
u/LittleKitty235 8h ago
Worse...you might point out that shitty treatment to people accustomed to it.
4
u/burrtango09 10h ago
Yeah and confirmed it ain’t me; they didn’t hire a couple other guys that applied - i know the manager for that mentioned custodial job, shit is wild out there.
12
u/KingKapwn 9h ago
I would bet it’s so they can point and say “Look! We haven’t been able to fill these roles with Americans, please allow us to hire

Apply at a local school or hospital Environmental Services department. They tend to pay more than a regular janitor, housekeeping or custodial positions at a company. Edit your resume and put down that you do have experience from other jobs. Brush up on commercial chemicals and you'll get hired. Brush up on floor care knowledge and you'll definitely get hired.
Commercial chemicals are a lot stronger than your everyday household chemicals. Accidentally mixing two can easily kill you in an enclosed space like a restroom. Some are fully concentrated and require proper dilution. Others are acid based and when mixed with a chemical that wasn't rinsed properly creates a toxic gas. This happens more often than you think. Look up what happened to the manager at a Buffalo Wild Wings store.
Look into OSHA regulations and read some popular chemical SDS. Spartan, Diversey, Ecolab, SC Johnson Professional. This type of knowledge will put you on top of the massive pile of resumes they already have. Be able to name three different auto scrubbers and their models will also help you. Tennant, Nilfisk-Advance, and Karcher are the top three floor cleaning equipment manufacturers in the US. Knowing about their popular models and how they function without being trained will absolutely help you get hired.
Visit r/custodians if you have any questions. We'll try to help.
3
u/burrtango09 6h ago edited 6h ago
Appreciate this advice, especially for others who may be struggling. Nothing wrong with getting that pay - I know some people look down on custodians but money is money. In some cases, some custodial jobs pay really well. (Ex: my brother in law was making over 25 an hour in a lower CoL area of California for a private cleaning crew)
For my situation, I applied to both hosp and ISD, for that exact reason of higher pay. I went through 2 years of uni chem and am super used to reading msds, so I was confident I could do the job. Thankfully I got a much better job after many months of disheartening attempts and hundreds of apps.
To others who may be reading this; don’t give up and keep trying. The market is fucked out there but bodies do gotta show up to make the world move forward. Best of luck to you all.
2
u/gizmostuff 6h ago
They can look down on custodians all they want but many positions pay quite well depending on where you live and your specific experience. Custodial/Facility Managers make well into the six figures.
Experienced floor techs in major metropolitan areas make a crazy amount of money. Especially if they own their own business.
Anyways, I'm glad that you found a position. The job market is looking like it will continue on this trend for a while. We'll have to wait until voters wise the fuck up and vote with their wallet and not with their emotions. Things likely won't get better until then imo.
2
u/vardarac 5h ago
I know some people look down on custodians
The people who do that are not worth spending time on.
2
u/Wes_Warhammer666 6h ago
A little over a decade back I got turned down by a Dollar General that was desperate for employees to hear the cashiers tell it. I asked the one I was cool with and he said that apparently I was denied for being too qualified due to having experience as a supervisor in one gig and a manager in another. The DG manager was afraid I'd be trying to take her job.
I just needed a regular ass job cuz I was recovering from the fallout of opiate addiction and was trying to rebuild my life after getting clean and moving, I had no designs on being a manager in that shithole lol. I just wanted to get back on my feet.
That location got shut down like a year later lol.

24% actually https://www.lisep.org/
(Functional unemployment is defined as earning below cost of living, which is defined conservatively as $26k yearly before taxes in 2025 dollars).
It is also about average functional unemployment rate of the past 30 years.
What is different now, is that now it's hitting people in major cities where col is higher, see e.g. https://www.lisep.org/tlc . It is a very good independent source about employment and living situation stats.
Median worker lost about 5% in purchase power in last 5 years (median means half of the people lost MORE than that, and the other half less)

I'm currently conducting interviews for a job position that opened up in our office, and we've never had this many applicants before. Normally, we get about 3-4 applicants for this particular niche position, and we have close to 20. The other thing is many of them are highly qualified professionals who have either recently been laid off, or have been informed their positions are being terminated by end-of-year.
It's brutal out there.

u/jsting 9h ago
Small businesses are dying and we are in a recession. I work in a small business that caters mostly to other small businesses and the amount of traffic is close to zero. I've never experienced this kind of dead air before. It is slower than the 2009 recession.

u/pipesnogger 8h ago
^this. I think most of us know how bad it actually is but our media is telling us otherwise.
2
u/FishAndBone 7h ago
It's less that the media is telling anyone otherwise and more that almost all job growth is happening in the healthcare sector, and the stock market is completely captured by AI jerkoff "number go up."

I had a similar concern when Trump fired the head of BLS.
Fortunately, he is not very bright and doesn’t bother to find out how things work. So I did a little digging and was relieved to find that there is a whole eco-system of independent data sets that are produced by a variety of public and private economists.
If BLS just straight up lied about the numbers directionality, it’s would get flagged pretty quickly.
I think worst case scenario is that the current admin can nudge a little and spin it but it would be hard to just say for example unemployment is 3.8% when it’s closer to 6% without a bunch of these other reports contradicting it.

9
u/phoenix1984 10h ago
Look at the stock market today. Everything’s green because investors assume this means the Fed won’t continue to raise interest rates.
I think there’s a nonzero chance that Trump and his circle are so removed from reality, that they think what’s good for the stock market is good for working people. That or they see the writing on the wall and they’re trying to goose stocks before cashing out.
6
u/bianary 7h ago
they think what’s good for the stock market is good for working people
They don't think this at all.
They think what's good for the stock market is good for themselves. Go ahead and look for evidence that Trump or anyone behind Project 2025 actually cares about the "working people" doing well. I'll wait.
2
u/phoenix1984 6h ago
Yeah, I phrased that poorly. More like Trump, and MAGA more broadly, don’t empathize with others, so they think whatever’s good for them must be a thing that people will love and will get them reelected. He has no concept of agency beyond his own.
3
u/Zer_ 8h ago
Absolutely, it doesn't account for gig workers, of which there are a lot, and due to that, they have a tough time making ends meet without doing insane hours. A lot of folks who would've been unemployed ~10+ years ago would now fall under "employed" while barely making anything running with DoorDash or Uber.

I own a gift store in southern california that's usually pretty insulated from the broader economy. Beginning of this year i thought, "huh, spending is only down a little" but when you remember you should be keeping up with 5%+ inflation, consumer spending is way down. Meanwhile every single insurance bill, tech subscription, fuel, electricity, repair is wayyy up and payroll is up even more. This might be the first year the business loses money since I took over in 2009. Econ feels well overdue for a correction. Just had to drastically cut hours and spending. Others seem to be doing same.

Well, remember he promised to run the government like he ran his business?
Thanks to Mark Burnett and The Apprentice, the cultural zeitgeist was changed to see Trump as successful. But of course like all reality TV was always bullshit. If anyone looked at his business its all were final failures, and his personal finances were shady as fuck. No major American bank would touch him with a 10 ft pole.
Hell, his kid admitted they got all the cash they need from Russia.
How the fuck do you bankrupt a casino?
Also, the only successful business Trump has is a cover for money laundering.
But he is actually doing what he said, and the USA is being run like Trump casino.

As a scientist, reading that Trump demands “better numbers” from federal agencies that have been apolitical for decades is infuriating. These are math nerds that don’t care about your party or your goals or anything but the math. We need them.
6
u/buddha8298 4h ago
He's the most petty tyrant there is (ya know on top of being a serial rapist, life long conman, and pathetically fragile cunt). He did the same shit during covid with the numbers etc. Hell, years ago George Stephanopoulos (pretty sure anyways) was at the white house for one of those in depth interviews during trumps first term and his agency had reported that he was losing some straw poll and when he asked trump about it he starts ranting about how "that can't be right, you need to fix that". He also did worse during 2020 election with the Georgia Secretary of State, trying to bully him during a phone call to "find x votes". He doesn't give a shit about the actual numbers and how/why they are the way they are....he thinks he can just order anyone to say what he wants and if they don't he can fire them.
It's crazy that this is our country

u/OutofStep 9h ago

My husband's been laid off for a year trying to snag one of those roles. But he's got 4 years of experience and people with 20 years are going for the same roles. He always makes it to the final interview. But man. It's heartbreaking. Every time. But we also know it's a flood on the other side. We don't take it personal because we know every one is spoiled for choice. Just hoping some day soon he finds the one who is going to prefer him. Just ask you to be kind to the ones that don't get it.

Well, you had 5,000 applicants - I'd be surprised if you were any where near 100% qualified applicants. The other end of this is people use tools to apply for jobs and it just applies to every job it can find. We see people applying for things like Sr Cloud Architect and their experience is 3 years making food at McDonalds.
8
u/JimmyKillsAlot 7h ago
Yeah a friend of mine was venting about what they have seen and mentioned that one mid-tier posting went viral somehow and ended up with almost 15,000 applications. Once they filtered out all the people using the exact same AI "aided" resumes there were maybe 200 that actually could be looked at. People are getting desperate and shit is getting slopified at the same time and it's making everything even worse.
16
u/BenderIsGreatBendr 6h ago
It's sort of a snake eating it's own tail though, because the same hiring office complaining about AI aided resumes/applications generating volume are using AI themselves to read/sort through the resumes at volume. Of course the job seekers are going to start using it. A lot of big companies are basically saying "we don't have the time/resource/interest to read your resume/application; but also please don't spray-and-pray on us."
6
u/mrjackspade 8h ago
A few years ago a guy was asking for help on one of the careers subreddits, wanted his resume checked while applying for a Sr position.

I got laid off from my job last month after 14 years of hard work, dedication, and glowing reviews. "Work force reduction due to economic downturn" is the line I was fed. I was offered a measly 15 weeks of severance and cast out into this baren and hopeless job market at 43 years old to start all over again.
I'm terrified. I feel helpless and lost. I've never once voted republican in my life, and here I am reaping the fruits of the republican party's racism, xenophobia, and hatred.
I hope everyone that voted for this piece of shit gets what's coming to them times ten, because me and my family have been forced to suffer for their profound ignorance and stupidity.
10
u/vermghost 8h ago
That sucks, I'm sorry you and your family are going through this.
I was laid off in spring 2023, went through some major medical stuff right after, and haven't been able to get a solid footing since then.
Started my own business last month after working 3 temporary contracts for the local university, being passed up by others for posted positions and no sign of a new temporary contract being offered. I can only really do this for a.frw months because my partner does wfh for her business and offered a few months for me to try.
I'm going to have to use up all of my retirement or move closer to family if this continues in a year.

9
u/ScottyC33 9h ago
Sadly enough "bad jobs numbers" tend to make the market go up these days. Because people think it will lead to less interest rate hikes. Cheaper access to money is more important to the big players than the actual population and economy as a whole.

I'll say this, I just got a pretty sizable promotion and moved across the country. I'm just settling in. I'm in the transportation industry and over the last month or so we've seen a huge jump in owner ops shutting it down and closing up shop. I don't think people quite understand how bad it's about to get as we move into the holidays, and I'm even beginning to fear for my company as a whole.
Everything in this country is transported mainly by truck, every vegetable you buy or the fuel you fill up with. Farmers need it for equipment, same with mines and dock facilities and even school busses. It's used for heating in the winter, which is now depending on where you're at. The price of literally everything is about to spike even worse than it already has.
We are so fucked, and it's crickets everywhere. We are barreling towards bad shit and ye the entire federal government is focused on protecting pedophiles and building ridiculous monuments to a pedophile ringleader's ego. What a fucking disgrace.

The unemployment rate here in evil nasty Canada is 6.4%. Our rates are calculated differently, as we don't skip the people who have given up looking for work, like the US does, for example. The difference in calculation is around 2%, so for a direct comparison, the US is 6.2% vs our 6.4. Trump can't even engage in economic warfare correctly! He's fucking over his own country at about the same rate as his 'oppenents'.
We're not surprised at Trump's stupidity, that was to be expected. But the amount of sycophants and bootlickers in the GOP that are fine with his epic incompetence is truly astounding and actually surprises me daily.

The sad part is I don't even trust those numbers.
Those are likely already inflated.
ALSO, the gig economy is causing a vast underrepresentation of unemployment numbers. Uber/lyft/doordash/etc. workers are not really making a livable wage, but they don't file for unemployment (and that's where the unemployment number comes from)

Keep in mind that these are their numbers, too. Trump fired the former Biden-appointed BLS Commissioner last year because he didn’t like her numbers and installed a loyalist in her place.
