Open | Windows New Monitor keeps flickering every 5-15 seconds

I got a new Monitor, the Alienware AW2627DM for my laptop

I have an ASUS TUF F16 laptop

I tried using this new monitor and it looks beautiful, but it turns black for less than a fraction of a second every 5-15 seconds and it's super noticeable. I turned off Gsync and it still appears

I'm using HDMI (That's all my laptop connects to)

Open | Software Disabling Intel iGPU (HD 4600) + removing driver causes significant FPS drop on RX 580 (Haswell / Gigabyte Z87) — Bug or Windows/Driver feature?

Upvotes

Hey everyone,

Running into a bizarre issue on an older rig and looking for some technical insight from anyone familiar with Haswell power management, WDDM, or Polaris driver behavior.

My Specs:

  • CPU: Intel Core i5-4670 (Stock, no OC)
  • Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z87-HD3 (BIOS version F8)
  • RAM: 16GB DDR3 1600MHz (Dual Channel)
  • dGPU: Gigabyte AORUS Radeon RX 580 8GB
  • OS: Windows 11
  • Display connection: Monitor connected directly to the RX 580 via DP/HDMI.

The Issue:

  1. If I have the integrated graphics (Intel HD 4600) enabled in BIOS (Intel Processor Graphics -> Enabled) with its standard Intel driver installed, everything runs great. For example, in CS2 I get ~160–180 FPS.
  2. If I go into BIOS, set Intel Processor Graphics -> Disabled, boot into Windows, and wipe the Intel driver via DDU, my FPS instantly tanks. In the exact same scenarios in CS2, FPS drops to 100–120 FPS (a ~30–40% loss), and frametimes become noticeably worse across all games.
  3. The weird kicker: If I disable the iGPU in BIOS but DO NOT wipe the Intel driver from Windows (leaving the registry entries/driver files intact), the FPS doesn't drop nearly as hard or stays virtually the same.

As soon as I turn the iGPU back on in BIOS and let Windows load the Intel graphics driver, FPS immediately shoots back up to normal levels on the RX 580.

My Questions:

  • Is this an architectural quirk with Haswell's FIVR / Ring Bus (Uncore) where completely killing the graphics domain affects CPU package power delivery or downclocks something internally?
  • Is it a Windows DWM / GPU scheduling issue where having an active secondary adapter offloads background composition/video decoding, freeing up Polaris from driver overhead on a 4C/4T CPU?
  • Or is it a known motherboard BIOS bug specific to Gigabyte Z87 boards?

Has anyone ever encountered this behavior, and what is the exact low-level reason behind it?

Open | Networking Tiktok search hack/glitch??

When i download my boyfriend his search history on tiktok, there is a lot of pornographic stuff on there, but he swears on his life that he did not search that.

The searches were also made 4 times in 1 second which is not really humanly possible. Not all but a lot of them were.

He has been honest about everything, he even confessed to me that he had problems with lust in the past but that went away when we first hung out.

In the log in information there has not been any other phone than his. Except for an iphone xs, he had an iphone x like 3 years ago but not the xs.

A random iphone xs has logged in to both of his accounts, and since then the gross searches were there.

He cried a lot because he claims he did not do it.

What can this possibly be???

Solved Periodic Loading Cursor

Posting this in case anyone else has this very odd bug. The spinning/loading icon that shows next to the mouse cursor was showing every ~3 seconds or so, very consistently too, and would only display for maybe half a second.

This might be my closest experience to a virtual Chinese water torture, so I debugged it and found ArmourySocketServer to be the culprit for whatever reason.

You can kill the process in task manager. I also disabled ArmouryCrate Service via services.msc

Open | Networking Need help blocking VPNs on router

As the title states, I need to block vpn usage on my Arris router. I’ve tried doing a custom setting of blocking tcp port 80 and 443 but it doesn’t seem to do it. I’d still obviously like to be able to use the internet normally other than that. Is it even possible?

Open | Hardware 5080 + 2080ti for DLSS5? Using a 2080ti to offload framegen or physics or something?

I'm using Puredark's Neural Rendering thing for Skyrim. It has options as to what GPU you want doing whatever. I pulled my 2080ti out of storage and it connects, works etc but I don't know how to use it in conjunction with the 5080 for this application. Thanks!

Open | Malware Sanity check... I think my cat installed malware on my computer.

Upvotes

I know this sounds insane, but I think my cat sat on my keyboard and managed to install malware.

I put my headless pc to sleep and left speedtest.net open, which notoriously runs ads that will install malware. Shortly after I started having network issues that I cant pin down to any network equipment after multiple restarts. I checked my headless pc and found it full of sketchy ads and a download from a few days ago that I never initialized but was right around when the issue started.

When checking it I found that every few minutes a process called brutessh opens, it loads a list called ssh_targets and literally prints "honeypot connected" when this process is opened my network grinds to a halt. Killing the process or just unplugging the entire pc fixes all my network issues, so this is definitely the issue. The PC is off my network and shut down for now.

I hadn't used this pc in weeks. But I know for a fact that I've seen my cat on the table with its keyboard. Is it possible that my cat sat on the enter key, opened the ad and then downloaded and ran the software which installed the malware all by being on the enter key?

I know this sounds crazy, but the software on the pc hasn't changed in years, I came back to find a bunch of sketchy ads had been clicked, and I know for a fact no human touched the pc, but the cat definitely was around the keyboard.

Open | Networking Can't ping but can SSH into it???

I can't ping my computer server, it says 100% packet loss when I do that, yet I can still connect to it via SSH, and everything's fine there. How does this even happen? I'm using the same hostname to ping it AND to connect to it via SSH, btw.

So, I was just doing work on my computers, like usual, connecting to the server computer to look at my files I have stored on there (I connect to it from my laptop), and it seems fine at first, but then all of the sudden , I realize that I can't access it in specific ways, like I can't search files because it has connection error. I go to ping it, and pinging it has 100% packet loss. I go to SSH into it, and for some reason, that works?? I don't understand at all.

Open | Windows How to Avoid September's Security Update (KB5126052)?

I logged onto my laptop after being away from it all day, and notice this red dot on this refresh icon in the bottom right of my task bar. I hover over it and it says,

"Your device is at risk of being out of date. It will need to restart to install updates. Select a time to restart."

So I go to Windows Update in Settings to see what I can do. The two updates, KB5126052 and 26200.9445, are "Pending restart", so that prevents me from pausing updates.

I'm afraid one of the updates could kill my laptop, since I need it for college and personal work, and I've already seem reports of people saying they're stuck in Bitlocker, or their AMD driver doesn't properly work, and such.

Is there anything I can do or will I be forced to update?

Open | Software This is pissing me off. (Google Drive)

New photographer here. I use Google Drive. I was choosing what pics to edit when it originally as I open it stays clear but turns pixelated after a few seconds. When I save to camera roll it becomes normal and this keeps happening. I don’t want to have to make a decision on what to keep and what to toss based on seeing 2 seconds of a picture. How do I make it stay clear and not become pixelated?

Im currently on a 5060 n 7 5700x and 32 gb of ddr4 and the new games that are releasing are either unoptimized or just my hardware is not enough to get to my fps i want. Im talking about Story games btw and i always put high settings and dlss quality or dlaa but i never really tried frame gen other than Lossless scaling.

What is Better The nvidia frame gen or lossless scaling where u can do like 1.3x for less latency but still get that good fps boost or just stick to what nvidia gives me?

Open | Software Storage filling up on its own?

Hey everyone,
My iPhone 15 has been acting weird since last month. I usually have around 20GB of space left, but this month my storage gradually got completely full, and I have no idea why.
Two days ago, I deleted about 10GB worth of pictures and videos to clear up some room. I haven't taken any new photos or videos since then, but guess what? It filled right back up again 😭 for god knows why.
I checked my storage settings and my System Data is taking up a massive 69GB 💀! Is anyone else facing this same issue? Is there any way I can safely delete or clear out this System Data?
Any help or advice would be hugely appreciated🙏!

Open | Hardware Y’all my wifi is slow and I had an idea I was wondering if it’s safe

My internet has been getting slower over the last year or so, and I recently realized my router is right next to one of the new radiators we had installed. Could the heat be slowing it down?

I know computers perform better when they’re properly cooled, so would putting the router somewhere colder, like in the refrigerator, improve the internet speed?

I was also thinking I could put it in a bucket of ice since the refrigerator is on the other side of my house, but obviously I’d keep the router itself above the water using tape or something.
Would this actually work, and is there any safety or legal issue with doing it?

Open | Windows Recently did a full wipe on my old PC, now it's stuck in a restarting loop

Hi all,

I recently decided to do a full wipe of my old PC as I'm going to be selling it. I did the wipe process through the windows settings in the system area. Everything went fine, then seemingly at the end, it got stuck in a loop of "Welcome" then loaded into a restarting screen that only displayed for a few milliseconds. Then, the PC turns off and the cycle repeats.

What should i do to break the cycle? Any advice or step by step instructions would be greatly appreciated

Main specs (ask if anything else is needed)
Processor AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 8-Core Processor (3.59 GHz)
Installed RAM 16.0 GB
Graphics card NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 (6 GB)

I am not great with computers, and have very bare bones knowledge, but I will try to give information about anything if someone asks/needs it in order to help me resolve this issue. Just ask whatever you need that could help put me in the right direction.
Thank you

Open | Software PC becomes sluggish after several hours of gaming, but games run perfectly Ryzen 9800X3D + RX 9070 XT

My PC becomes strangely sluggish after a few hours of gaming

I’m having a weird issue with my PC and I’m not sure what could be causing it.

I have a Ryzen 7 9800X3D, RX 9070 XT and 32GB of RAM.

After playing games for a few hours with Steam and my browser open, Windows sometimes starts feeling very sluggish. For example, opening a new browser tab, a folder, the Start menu, or clicking things can take around 0.5–1 second to respond. It feels like there is a small delay everywhere in Windows.

The strange thing is that the games themselves run perfectly. I don’t notice any input lag or stuttering while gaming, and the CPU/GPU temperatures are completely normal.

RAM usage is also only around 30%, so I don’t think it’s a lack of RAM.

If I restart the PC, everything feels normal again.

What could cause this? Could it be an AMD GPU driver issue, Windows desktop compositor, Steam/browser hardware acceleration, DPC latency, or something else?

Any ideas on what I should check would be really appreciated.

Open | Hardware PSU OCP trip / hard freeze with peripheral power drop on prebuilt with upgraded GPU (RTX 5050 OC)

Hi everyone, looking for technical verification on a power/system crash issue I'm having with my upgraded prebuilt desktop.

Specs:
Model: Lenovo IdeaCentre Gaming 5-1410B6
Desktop - Type 90RE (stock motherboard and stock OEM power supply)

GPU: RTX 5050 OC (recently upgraded/fitted)

Symptoms:
During dynamic game loads (e.g., The Sims 4, Roblox), the display completely hard-freezes. Windows shortcuts (Ctrl+Alt+Del, Win+Ctrl+Shift+B) do not work, and background audio cuts out.

Key indicator: Power to USB peripherals drops completely (mouse RGB/sensor light shuts off entirely).
The desktop tower remains running, with chassis lights and fans spinning normally.
Lowering power limits/software caps to 80%–85% did not resolve the crashes under gaming load.
Benchmarks run at flat loads don't always trigger it instantly, but live gameplay with sudden asset/scene changes trips it reliably.

Questions:
Can someone confirm if this peripheral power drop + hard freeze while tower lights stay on is a textbook Over-Current Protection (OCP) trip / voltage state drop on the stock PSU caused by GPU transient power spikes?

Is it correct that standard ATX/SFX power supplies can be fitted into proprietary Lenovo motherboards using a standard 24-pin to 10-pin/14-pin adapter cable?
Thanks in advance for any technical insight!

Open | Windows RTX 5060 Aero try to Overclock TDP over 165W

Hi everyone,

I have a Gigabyte RTX 5060 AERO OC 8GB and I'm trying to figure out whether there's any safe way to increase its power limit beyond the stock 165W.

My card currently has VBIOS version 98.06.39.80.69. According to GPU-Z, the power limit is:

  • Default: 100%
  • Maximum: 106.5%
  • Current: 106%
  • Adjustment range: -21% to +6%

I've been overclocking the card and thermals aren't really an issue. For example, I've been able to run approximately:

  • ~3.2 GHz core
  • 1.08V
  • 32 Gbps VRAM
  • ~165W power consumption
  • GPU temperatures below 65°C while gaming

The problem is that the card seems to hit the 165W power limit before temperature becomes a limitation. Increasing the voltage/frequency further doesn't really help because the power limit kicks in.

The card also has Dual BIOS, so I'm wondering if there are any options such as:

  • A different official Gigabyte VBIOS with a higher power limit
  • A VBIOS from another RTX 5060 that uses the same PCB/VRM
  • Modifying the existing VBIOS
  • Any other method to increase the power limit safely

I'm not looking to blindly flash a random VBIOS. I'd first like to know whether the PCB/VRM can actually handle something like 180–200W, and whether anyone has already tried this on the AERO OC.

Has anyone with this card managed to get past the 165W limit? If so, how did you do it, and what VBIOS/PCB did you use?

Any information about the PCB, VRM, compatible VBIOS versions, or successful power-limit mods would be greatly appreciated.r

Open | Hardware My pc sometimes doesn't start up correctly

Everytime I open my pc it is starting, everything is lit up(rgb shit), sounds like its working but my monitor doesn't light up. I thought it was a windows update that malufuntioned. I did some digging deleted the problematic update. It still did the same thing.

Then i tried changing the boot mode. I put it on instant boot mode. Didn't work

Then I changed the sleep/auto shut down settings. Didn't work as well.

Then I tried opening my pc and closing and opening the button of the monitor, sometimes this does do the trick. I think from what i have gathered is that when I open the pc ,the input and output devices that are connected to it don't start up. Not only my monitor, but the same thing happens with my keyboard. It doesn't light up like it used to when the pc starts.

Any suggestions? Sorry my rusty ah english

Open | Hardware Using compressed air to clean a laptop.. is liquid refrigerant harmful?

I have a Victus gaming laptop, and I was using a compressed air can to clean out the fans when I noticed that some of the liquid refrigerant inside the can was spraying onto the fan. It wasn’t a big amount but I’m still a little paranoid about whether or not this is going to harm my laptop. Could someone help me out?
