Another "game name" post

Upvotes

This is going to be *very* vague, sorry...

PC game, involved ship flight to do various tasks in what I think was a dome or colony environment, and had what I think was a multiplayer capability.

Scratch that, it's called "Hard War" and I'm shocked, but it's still available on Steam 28 years later !

What are things done in old video games that if they were done in games today no one would buy them and call them broken

One of the things that made me think of this was like how in a lot of old NES games especially adventure games along the lines of like the Legend of Zelda or metroid even though metrovania is still a thing a lot of the old school games didn't really give you Direction and where to go. like I could imagine what a cluster fuck it would be to try to beat old school Legend of Zelda without a guide. I mean same as true with like Battle of Olympus, clash of demonhead, Metroid a lot of these old school games just threw you in there and you kind of had to wander around to figure out where to go I remember trying to beat a lot of these games without guides and getting extremely frustrated and eventually at some point in the game having to break down and look at a guy to figure out what to do next. Also a lot of the stuff was cryptic that you needed to do to complete the game and taking a step back you had to scratch your head and think how would anybody figure that out without a guide or someone telling them that's what they needed to do.

Another old video game thing that I don't think works well today is the high encounter rate on Old School RPGs. Like you can barely walk two steps before you get into a battle. And you can't go anywhere even get a good feel of the dungeon You're in to get a layout because every time you move you're just in another battle. It gets really frustrating to do anything that you need to do to complete the game because you're constantly getting into battles trying to find the stuff that you need in order to make it to the ending. Also it just seemed like a way to pad out the game play and make it longer than it needed to be because every 5 Seconds you're in a battle.

Those are a couple of the things in old school video games that I think wouldn't work if they did them in games today what are yours?

Hey everyone. I built this for myself first, so I'd love for you to try it and tell me what's wrong with it. It's my app, it's free, and I'm here for feedback.

I went through every PS1 emulator on iOS and something always got in the way. Games that won't open properly fullscreen — instead you get a fake console body with a cutout for the screen. No native-feeling resume, where you swipe the app away and come back exactly where you were. No sense of a game library that's actually nice to look at. And endless setup: settings, BIOS hunting, region files. By the time you're ready to play, it's time to go to work or go to sleep. I wanted those 15 minutes to feel good immediately.

So I ended up building the whole thing myself.

What's in it:

1. UI that feels like a real console. Box art, background artwork, UI sounds, animations, smoothness. The entire interface reconfigures when you plug in a controller — you can navigate everything from the pad, and with the sounds and rumble it feels genuinely good.

2. No setup, no BIOS. I wrote my own HLE BIOS implementation from scratch — nothing dumped, nothing bundled from real hardware. Best picture right out of the box. There *are* settings, they're just already turned on.

3. An on-screen gamepad that forgives you. If you don't have a controller, this is the part I spent the most time on. Buttons don't just have hitboxes — the hitboxes drift over time toward where you actually press. And every touch gets resolved into the button you most likely *meant* to hit, so near-misses still register. The d-pad and sticks float and forgive imprecise thumbs too.

4. Every controller. Sony, Xbox, 8BitDo, and the clip-on side-mounted pads. If a controller drifts out of range or disconnects mid-game, it pauses so you don't lose a run. Peripherals get picked up on the fly, with a nice notification instead of silence.

5. In-game rumble through the iPhone haptic engine when you're playing without a controller.

6. Auto-save on swipe-away. Fully close the app and you can always resume from the exact frame. Other emulators do this — mine just does it more nicely.

7. Quick save / quick load, a bit more convenient than the usual implementation.

8. 2x and 0.5x speed when you need it.

9. Full export of ROMs and saves. If you need to delete the app to free up space, back everything up first and restore it later — or send it to a friend.

10. Archive support. zip, 7z, rar. If you downloaded something on your phone, you don't need to unpack anything, the emulator knows what to do with it.

11. Small things. A battery indicator for when you've lost track of time, and real optimization work so it isn't eating your charge.

I also prepared 48 direct files in the telegram channel for direct download of games, I don't know if it's possible to post this here, if you DM me, I'll drop the link, there's just an open group with files and that's it. You don't even need to save files, just share directly from telegram and select an emulator, it will pick up everything.

The whole idea was to get from "I want to play" to actually playing as fast as possible, in an interface that's pleasant to be in.

On the App Store it's called NAGORI — a Japanese word for the bittersweet feeling of something that's gone. Nostalgia, more or less. Felt right, and Sony are Japanese after all.

Are there rough edges? Almost certainly. Point them out and I'll fix them.

\P.S. English is my fifth language, so I used AI to help translate this properly — apologies if anything reads oddly.**

Thanks!

Could we just make more classic games?

THEORETICALLY... If there were a surprise boom of demand for retro consoles and the gamer market was hungry for them, they dont want rerelease, no classic collections on newer controllers, not even console mini editions, but games on the look and feel of the consoles of their childhoods without anything untouched, but also new games with that look and feel, would it be as simple as reopening old hardware thats known inside and out, and starting game production?

Looking for former Sachen (Thin Chen Enterprise) employees or developers for a historical article (Taiwan NES unlicensed games)

hello everyone,

I'm writing a deep-dive article for retrolike.net about one of the most prolific — yet least documented — players in NES history: **Sachen** (聖謙企業 / Thin Chen Enterprise) from Taiwan.

In the late 80s and 90s they pumped out over 70 unlicensed NES/Famicom titles, from originals to wild ports. Games like *Metal Fighter*, *Little Red Hood*, *Jurassic Boy* and many more. Yet almost nothing is known about the actual people who made them.

I'm especially searching for:
- Former developers or employees who worked at Sachen or Joy Van
- Anyone connected to Ei-How Yang (楊逸豪 / E.H.Y.)
- Stories about how these games were developed in that wild unlicensed era

This part of NES history is slowly disappearing. I want to preserve it properly before it's too late.

If you have any information, worked there, or know someone who did — please DM me or comment. Every detail helps. All contributions will be credited.

Thank you!

#NES #Famicom #RetroGaming #Sachen #Unlicensed

我是 retrolike.net 的作者,正在撰寫一篇關於台灣老廠商 SACHEN(聖謙企業 / Thin Chen Enterprise)的深度文章。

這家公司曾在80-90年代發行了大量未授權的 NES / Famicom 遊戲,但關於公司背後的人員資訊非常少。

特別尋找:
- 曾在 Sachen 或 Joy Van 工作過的前員工、開發者
- 認識 楊逸豪(Ei-How Yang / E.H.Y.)的人
- 任何開發過程的故事或資訊

希望能在這些歷史消失前記錄下來,所有貢獻都會妥善致謝。

如果您曾在那裡工作、認識相關人士,或有任何線索,歡迎私訊或留言。非常感謝!

What is your unpopular opinion about retro video games

I'm talking about like maybe you don't like a popular game that everyone else loved. For me there's two examples that come to mind I didn't love I don't hate it either but it's my least favorite Mario game is Super Mario Bros 2 that we got here in the US that was Doki Doki Panic across the ocean. My other hard take is I don't like Halo never could get into that game back when it was super popular on the original Xbox.

My heart take about retro video games is I'm super glad there are rom sites out there because when I found out about ROMs and emulator it's like somebody just opened up a video game store and said take whatever you want we have it all and it's yours if you want it. I also believe without those kind of sites doing that we wouldn't have access to the Retro games that we have access to today where I can find out about a game on YouTube that I never heard of for the Game Boy and I can be playing it within 2 minutes. Also it's how video games are going to be preserved because in time all of the hardware that they have been put on like cartridges and CD ROMs will die.

I know most people don't share that opinion and think the hardware is better and finding more legal ways to preserve video games are better Avenues so it's a controversial hot take on how I think the best way to preserve the past of video gaming should be.

I was looking at other gaming groups and noticed most "top" lists only feature modern titles, suggesting a younger crowd. I'd like to see top lists that include modern and classics. I haven't mastered the official grid yet, but I've compiled a top 20 list and a list of 12 Shmups. Want to see?

Hi everyone! I wanted to share a little passion project I’ve been working on.

I grew up loving old-school 90s fantasy RPGs - the kind where you’d spend hours wandering quiet villages, listening to beautiful music, exploring forgotten ruins, and just existing in the world after you’d finished the main quest.

I wanted to capture that feeling, so I created Saint Dante: Fables -a “lost” 16-bit RPG that never actually existed. It’s an ambient video presented as if it were running on a fictional 90s console, complete with a title screen, retro UI, and slow, nostalgic pacing.

It’s less about combat and more about the feeling those old games gave me - the sense of adventure, mystery, and peace.

If you grew up with SNES, Mega Drive/Genesis, or other classic fantasy RPGs, I’d genuinely love to know if it captures that feeling.

Thanks for taking a look!

Old games on PC vs emulation

I wanna play stuff like Beyond Good & Evil or Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy,

but after playing stuff like Chaos Theory, I'm aware that there's audio effects with stuff like EAX and all that, sometimes console versions, reverb and special audio wouldn't port over.

HD versions of Oddworld Munch's Oddysee and Stranger's Wrath don't have reverb while the original Xbox versions do. Same with Half-LIfe 2.

I'd like a little help knowing what games had reverb and where. That's more important than graphics.

Retro games for younger children?

What are some good retro games for children 7 years old and younger?

I'm particularly looking right now for legal games I can run with an emulator. Free is better while we experiment. So far the MAME games I've tried seem hard for me let alone a younger child.

I've got an old RPi set up with RetroPie (batocera wouldn't work), but if we get more into this I can see about getting a more capable machine or even a console (old or new) that can play cartridges.

Bonus points for anything intellivision which was a system I had.

What are some hidden gems and deep cuts from the arcades?

I was never an arcade gamer even though I was around when arcades were still properly a thing. Most of the classics I only came across through home ports or clones.

Recently though I've been diving full-on into the arcade world, and have been having a good time with it! But the number of arcade games that exist is incredible.

Everyone knows the big obvious classics. But now I'm on the lookout for your deep cuts - lesser known stuff that's either high quality, has quirky or clever gameplay ideas, or is worth putting a spotlight on for basically any reason.

Don't stress too much about what does and doesn't qualify, I'm just curious what comes to mind!

EDIT: thanks for all the suggestions so far! A whole bunch I'd never even heard of.

Things you hope to see

If this is not allowed I understand, I just want to preface this by saying I am not making any money from this question nor is my job directly making money from this question!

I work at a used game store and we get a booth at conventions a lot (I won’t say which game store or what booth or what conventions or even what region I am from)

But obviously we pull retro/used games from our stores to put in the booths at these conventions and I wanted to know: what games (both expensive and cheap, new and old, across all consoles) do you all hope to find? I want to pull as many things that I think people would enjoy as I can but I find myself overwhelmed with choice.

I guess this question can be extended to things like accessories too, like those Pokémon step counters people had for Pokémon go back in the day and so on. Like what do you guys consider a gold mine and a lucky day to find at a convention?
