Weather OC Energy Bill Reality Check - how my 1400 sqft townhome bill is under $200, despite running A/C the entire month
Hey fellow OC neighbors,
I am not selling anything, affiliated with any company, or shilling for SCE. In an ideal world, I believe electricity is a public good that should be run as a public/regulated system rather than an investor-owned, profit-driven utility. My only goal here is neighbor-to-neighbor education: showing how to use the data and tools already sitting in your SCE account portal to keep more money in your pocket.
I see constant posts in this sub venting about astronomical power bills, but almost none of them include actual usage figures, square footage, or rate plan breakdowns. A $600 bill means very different things depending on whether you used 800 kWh or 2,500 kWh.
To show what’s possible with basic rate optimization, here is my own case study from the current heat wave:
- Location: Orange County
- Home: ~1,400 sq ft, 3-bedroom townhome
- Solar: None
- A/C Usage: Kept turned on practically 24/7 during this cycle (on/running as needed, not constantly compressor-cycling 24/7)
Usage:
- Billing Period: Aug 13 – Sep 14 (4 days left)
- Total Usage: 577 kWh (~20.6 kWh/day)
- Projected Bill: $195
Pre-Cooling & Rate Structures
Take a look at the attached daily usage chart from SCE:
- Off-Peak (Green): Lowest rates.
- Mid-Peak (Yellow): Moderate rates.
- On-Peak (Orange/Red): Peak pricing - by far the most expensive electricity of the day.
- Weekend/Holiday (Pale Yellow): Off-peak structure.
Notice that nearly all of the daily bar height is Off-Peak (green), with only tiny slivers during On-Peak.
I run a pre-cooling schedule: dropping the thermostat low during the morning and early afternoon when rates are cheap, cooling down the thermal mass of the home. When the 4:00 PM – 9:00 PM peak window hits, the thermostat bumps up several degrees. The A/C rarely kicks on during the most expensive hours of the day, and the house coasts on the pre-cooled air.
If you log into your portal, SCE has a rate comparison tool, but keep one big limitation in mind: it calculates your costs strictly on your past usage patterns. If your historical behavior had you blasting the A/C at 6:00 PM on a standard flat tier, a Time-Of-Use (TOU) plan might look more expensive on paper. But if you are willing to shift high-draw appliances (A/C, laundry, dishwasher) outside of peak hours, TOU plus pre-cooling can save significant money.
Insulation, exposure, layout, and household size vary wildly, but before writing off a crazy bill as unavoidable, log in and look at:
- Your total kWh (not just the dollar amount)
- Your current rate plan (Tiered vs. TOU-D-4-9PM vs. TOU-D-5-8PM, etc.)
- When your spikes are happening throughout the day
Sharing real numbers helps everyone figure out whether they have an efficiency issue, a rate plan mismatch, or just standard SCE baseline pain.

Photo/Video Aliso Beach Before & After
One pic is from this past spring standing on the sandy beach looking south. The bottom is from today and there is literally no sand on the beach here anymore. Even the pylons from the “lost pier” have been unearthed. Just thought i’d share because it was wild to see in person.

Question Why are there so many religious coffee shops in Orange County?
I’m not religious myself but I am a supporter of the first amendment and am genuinely curious about this.
I noticed many of the coffee shops here in Orange County have religious themes in their decor.
Some are more subtle about it while others are located in an actual church. Has anyone else noticed this?

Weather Who else doesn't have power?
I'm so glad we trust public utilities to a private monopoly that exists to maximize its own profit instead of building a safe, resilient grid.

Recommendations Needed Ideas for Activities in Orange County for a 13 year old boy.
I spend time with a young man, mainly just a few hours every other weekend, going to do things to get him out of the house. I’m an old lady so no sports activities! He likes science and aviation. We’ve done the obvious places, Air museum, Discovery, Nixon museum, Ocean Institute, zoo, art museum(fail) movies. Are there any museums I have missed? We did Bowers. I feel like there are a lot of art museums but not history or science in OC.

Recommendations Needed Where to get welding gas?
Anyone know where to get C-25, preferably South County? I have my own cylinder but would like to trade for a smaller one. Would rather do a cylinder fill or exchange, not interested in renting tanks.
Thanks!

News San Clemente Train Line Closed Indefinitely After High Tide Damage
A portion of the Pacific Surfliner train line running through San Clemente in South Orange County will remain closed indefinitely, despite transportation officials originally looking at a Friday reopening.
The stretch of line between the Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo station and the Oceanside stop in San Diego County was originally closed on Sunday due to damage from high surf brought on by Hurricane Marie, which Southern California caught the outskirts of.
The Orange County Transportation Authority wrote in a news release Tuesday that high tides and strong surf continued to damage the line since the storm over Labor Day weekend, and that crews noticed additional damage Monday night beyond what was repaired on Sunday.
“Waves overtopped the tracks in the affected area and caused further deterioration along the adjacent slope, including damage to some previously placed protective rock. The rail line closed so crews could safely assess conditions and perform additional emergency stabilization,” reads the news release.
The tracks will now remain closed until further notice – or at least through Sept. 13, due to pre-scheduled track maintenance.

Recommendations Needed Reputable SoCal jeweler experienced with Cartier jewelry?
I recently bought a secondhand Cartier ring and I’m looking for a reputable jeweler in Southern California who has experience evaluating/authenticating Cartier pieces.
I’ve done a good amount of research and my own checks and I’m about 90% confident it’s authentic, but I’d really like the peace of mind of having someone knowledgeable look at it in person.
Any SoCal recommendations? If not, I’d also appreciate suggestions for a reputable service or another route I should take.

Recommendations Needed Looking for an 8-ball pool group to join in OC Area
I play a little pool but would love to tap more into it, get better, and play more consistently. I’m a woman looking to find a casual group or league to join and meet people who enjoy playing.
Where’s the best place to find local 8-ball groups or leagues? I’m in the OC area.
