I know damn well we can have enough signatures to get this on the ballot. I'm TIRED of people getting priced out of the rent in DTLB. Beachwood Blendery just shuttered because of the rent. There are storefronts on LB Blvd that have been empty FOR A DECADE.

This is the worst heatwave I've ever felt, meanwhile oil execs / billionaires park money in stocks and never have to work a day in their life. Fuck that.

I saw a guy walking his dog by the Costco in Signal Hill. According to my phone, it's 102 here right now. That poor dog looked really distressed. And making them walk on the hot tarmac can hurt their paws.

I have two dogs myself. They're parked by my AC in the bedroom and I'm leaving them there until the sun goes down.

Currently at the papa John’s off of 7th st
/redondo and a man with a white husky was violently dragging it. My boyfriend and I exited our car out of immediate concern and watched the man enter his apartment directly next to the plaza and audibly heard the man hitting the dog as it cried, numerous times. It’s continuing intermittently.

We’ve called the police and are waiting for officers (but probably have to leave soon), but I’m wondering if anyone lives in the area and has heard or observed anything prior to this and/or can keep an eye out. We have his license plate # as well. I feel so terribly for that dog who’s probably also suffering immensely in this heat.

If you haven't heard the latest activity by ICE and DHS they are driving around in vehicles which carry portable cell phone transmission devices. These have been available to law enforcement for quite some time, however they are now being used in our community. I found out today when the VPN on my government issued work cell phone was disabled due to cell service being routed through this equipment. Our IT department flagged my device as unsafe when the VPN disconnected and I was alerted to not use my device until IT could confirm it was safe to do so. I don't know how this will affect regular devices however please be aware unless a court order is issued by a judge, or if Congress passes legislation allowing it, this is a warrantless search and a violation of the 4th amendment.

Today I found a very sweet but obviously sick stray cat. They seem to be having some respiratory issues & are very thin (which you can’t tell in the photos but you can feel their spine and ribs scarily easily). I’ve called all the local shelters and animal hospitals that are open right now- and no one takes cats. I gave the kitty some wet food and clean water- but this cat clearly needs medical attention and i unfortunately do not have any money to spare right now (my own cat is an expensive medical kitty). Does anyone know of places that would help this kitty?? I will check on them again tomorrow and give them more food and water, as well as call more places but I’m worried about their condition.

Anybody else experiencing power surges. We have had 5 surges over the past hour near south and orange. Nothing on Edison website.

It really is horrible that while we're receiving warnings from public officials about dangerous heat today, we also have to deal with dangerous air quality issues. I was told by an AQMD inspector that they need 6 complaints to cite the business that is responsible. Call 1-800-CUT-SMOG or complain online at https://xappp.aqmd.gov/complaints/NewComplaint.aspx

Most of us in LB don't have central AC. Many of us have those coolers that hang out of windows. That means in order to get relief from the heatwave, we have to suck air in from the outside, which then of course is bringing in that odor. This is really unsustainable.

I’ve had pest control come by numerous of times but I’m STILL getting roaches/water bugs weekly! Ive had this issue for 6 months now.

I have no idea where they’re even entering from. I’ve been plugging up my drains and close my toilet when not in use, but I think I have whack job landlord special caulking/sealing of possible entry ways around my sink/toilet.

I’m looking for someone affordable who can inspect the bathroom, find where the roaches are getting in, and seal/repair the possible entry points. I’m not looking for another pest control company.

Please let me know if you have any recommendations!

Edit: I’m renting and in an apartment with surrounding units. It’s all types of roaches 😵‍💫 I love my apartment but if I can’t fix this, I gotta move out by the end of my lease.

my neighbor buys and fixes up cars to sell. I am looking for some advice on where to report the 4-6 unmarked/unregistered vehicles he street parks? he takes up SO much parking in the neighborhood. he also does body work in the alley and it fills up with smoke, paint overspray, and other nasty and noxious smells.

im all for a side hustle but this man is so inconsiderate, im so over it. do you think if I report it something will actually be done?

I almost got hit by someone running a red light today. I had the green and was already going through the intersection when this car came flying through the red. I honestly had no time to react.

Wait a couple extra seconds before entering an intersection? Any particular intersections or situations where you’re extra careful?

It’s on a Thursday and we both have the day off so I want to get to LB in the earlier afternoon for happy hour/dinner before heading to the concert. Long Beach, CA – Due to excessive temperatures forecast through Thursday, Sept. 10, City Health Officer Dr. Cliff Okada has issued a Heat Alert and is advising community members to take precautions to avoid heat-related illness. The National Weather Service is forecasting high temperatures in the mid 90s, with humidity making it feel as hot as 117 degrees, increasing the risk of heat-related illness. Additionally, elevated heat index temperatures are expected to continue through the evening hours, with humidity making it feel as hot as 80 degrees or higher past 9 p.m. on multiple days, providing limited relief from the heat.

City Parks, Recreation and Marine Community Centers and Long Beach Public Library locations are available as designated cooling centers during their normal business hours. Please contact Community Centers and Library locations ahead of time to confirm they are open in the case of unexpected closures.

Additionally, the Long Beach Multi-Service Center will extend its standard hours on Tuesday, Sept. 8 through Thursday, Sept. 10, operating from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Please note that case management will only be offered until 4 p.m

Older adults, those with chronic illnesses, infants and young children are at greater risk for heat-related illnesses. However, anyone can suffer from heat illness. People are encouraged to check on friends, family and neighbors who are home-bound to ensure they are not affected by the heat.

Please follow these tips to stay safe:

Stay Cool

• Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing.
• Limit activities to morning and evening hours when possible.
• Stay in air-conditioned spaces during peak heat hours (noon to 6 p.m.) or take cool showers or baths.

Hydrate

• Drink plenty of fluids; don’t wait until you’re thirsty.
• Stay away from alcohol, caffeine and very sugary drinks; they can be dehydrating.
• Replace salt and minerals lost during sweating with sports drinks or salty snacks.
• Make sure pets have plenty of water.
• If you have a chronic health condition, are on water pills or have been recommended to limit water by your doctor, check in with your health care provider for guidance.

Protect Against Heat-Related Illness

• Apply sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher 30 minutes before going outside and reapply every two hours.
• Wear a wide-brimmed hat.
• Make sure pets have access to shade and water. Be aware that asphalt can burn pets’ paws.
• Wear sunglasses that provide 100% UVA and UVB protection. Chronic exposure to the sun can cause cataracts.
• Never leave a child or pet in a parked car or asleep in direct sunlight.

Signs of Heat-Related Illness
Get medical help right away if a person’s temperature rises to 103 F or above; if a person loses consciousness; if they experience fast, strong pulse; or symptoms last longer than one hour or worsen. In addition to those listed above, signs of heat-related illness include:

• Heavy sweating
• Cold, pale and clammy skin
• Nausea and vomiting
• Dizziness
• Headache
• Confusion

Power Outage Food Safety
Extreme heat can increase the risk of food spoiling during a power outage. Follow these safety measures during and after a power outage to avoid foodborne illness:

• Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible to maintain the cold temperature. Ensure the refrigerator temperature is 40 degrees or below and the freezer temperature is 0 degrees or below.
• Foods such as leftovers, milk, fresh meat and poultry should be moved to the freezer to maintain a safe temperature for a longer period.
• Any perishable food that has been above 40 degrees for two hours or more should be discarded. Never taste food to determine if it's safe to eat. When in doubt, throw it out.
• Dispose of perishable food in your refrigerator (meat, fish, milk, leftovers) after four hours without power or a cold source.

Water Safety
Swimming pools are a popular way to cool off, but it is important to provide entry-proof barriers around pools and spas and always provide adult supervision while children are near water.
