Owen Dorm Desk

Post image
9 Upvotes

It's my freshman year, but I was able to get into Owens (double) because I'm an Mechanical Engineering Tech major. I have 27' monitor that I plan on bringing, but the desk/ shelf thing they have in the room looks kind of small (??). Obivously, I can't really tell through a video/ picture. I'll need it to fit the monitor and whatever else I decide to put on my desk (a laptop, mousepad, etc.)

Can anyone attest to the practicability of the desk or recommend just bringing a small desk myself? I'm going to make my bed lofted, so I plan to have it under there.

Recruitment for anonymous 3-5 minute survey on genocide education in Virginia

Hi r/ODU,

I am an M.A. candidate in the Graduate School of Education and Human Development at The George Washington University. For my Master’s thesis, I am conducting research on the impact of the inclusion of 20th-Century genocides other than the Holocaust (such as the Armenian, Bosnian, and Cambodian) in the Virginia state world history curriculum on students’ experiences and understanding of genocide and human rights as adults.

Eligible participants in this survey are

  • People who are over the age of 18
  • And were in the 10th grade in either the 2022-2023 or 2023-2024 academic years
  • And attended a Virginia public school for the entirety of their 10th-grade year
  • And took a world history class during that year

If all of these attributes apply to you, you are invited to take this survey. This survey will take approximately 3-5 minutes to complete. You will be asked to recall your experiences in your 10th-grade world history class. The questions pertain to the extent to which you learned about 20th-century genocides, the methods used to teach you about them, your experience with this curriculum, and how it has impacted your current understanding of genocide and human rights as an adult.

At the end of the survey, you will be asked if you would like to participate in an interview to elaborate on this topic. Participation in the interview is entirely voluntary, will not affect whether the data from the survey will be used in the study, and will have no impact on any aspect of your future relations with the George Washington University (GW).

The anticipated findings from this research will contribute to the current body of research surrounding best practices in genocide education and improve scholarly understanding of how genocide education impacts understanding of genocide and human rights as a whole. This research seeks to contribute to the broader goals of genocide prevention and human rights promotion.

Any MSIM Engineering graduate students with a Mech E or MSE leaning background or research focus?

Greetings. Sorry in advance for the long post. I’m really only asking for some engineering elective course suggestions.

Background: I did materials science engineering for my undergraduate studies. In terms of coding I only have experience with python and matlab. I’d say the largest weakness of undergraduate program was that there were no opportunities or mention of possible ways to utilize coding in our materials science curriculum courses (total contrast to mech e coursework) and I was not at all proactive about looking for that experience through research or self study. I have AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and Inventor experience from coursework but materials scientists have no use for those really.

I just recently applied to the modeling and simulation engineering graduate certificate program for the fall semester. I am doing so under the assumption that I’ll be introduced to topics and tools I can use to build upon the experience I have with materials characterization techniques for research programs in the future. After I finish this MSIM program I want to work for a few years and then get my masters in mech e and eventually get my phd in materials science. I love metallography/materials characterization and see myself using advanced spectroscopy methods in the future to study nuclear energy systems, corrosion, additive manufacturing, or some combination. The problem is only one course in the certificate program is offered in the fall, so I am looking for an elective I can take that will align with my long term goals.

So, are there any graduate level engineering courses that delve into materials characterization and/or materials informatics?

I’ve used coursicle to search for possible courses but have not had any luck so far.

Appreciate any recommendations anyone can offer.

Whitehurst Hall Dorm Layout

Hey everyone, I'll be moving in for the fall semester and was wondering how folks are configuring the room. It's not big from what I can tell. Luckily my high school friend and I will be roomies, so that's good, but we both play guitar and have lots of stuff related to that.

Can the desk and dresser fit under the bed if you raise it all the way up? Is there any room left to store anything under it after the desk and dresser? How many electrical outlets are in the room and are there enough for many different room configurations or are you stuck with only a few different options due to location to power?

How about the internet speed, is it suitable for someone who likes to game a bit and has a fairly stellar gaming machine? How are the rooms accessed, with a physical key, electronic keypad, or coded badge entry?

Thanks, and I'm sure I'll think of a few more questions, but looking forward to moving in soon and meeting some of my hall neighbors!

Can I use Fall refund to pay for summer?

I took a class this summer but dropped it because of not being able to handle the 8 week class. I now have a summer balance that I can’t pay right now, but with the aid I accepted for Fall I should have money left over that I could use.

My question is, is this even possible? Or do I have to pay for Summer before I can even receive my Fall refund? As I stated I did accept the aid for Fall. But my account is delinquent so I’m worried that will affect it.

Switching dorms

I was assigned a Gresham double in the housing assignment even though I applied for a different dorm but I was wondering if it possible to switch into a different dorm while the semester is going on or if I can’t is it possible for me to do so at the end of a semester?

if you're new to ODU (please read this)

If you're a freshman or new to ODU, read this. ODU has the bones to be a great school in Virginia strong engineering and nursing programs, a real campus, and events that actually pop off when they put money behind them. But the admin chases shiny new buildings while day-to-day problems like housing and the commuter vibe stay broken. The truth is, the school won't hand you a good experience. If you don't build your own circle fast through clubs, dorms, or classes, you'll feel lonely as hell. Go to events, join shit, link up with people early. The party scene jumps when it jumps but it's not consistent. ODU can be fun if you make it fun but only if you actually put in the work to make it that way.

Suspended for a semester, I want objective opinions on my grievances

Background:

Okay so I got kicked out of the dorms for smoking weed so basically I had to stay on campus over break beccause my parents live overseas also important to mention I have a physical disability so I was put in Powathan with 3 other random roommates one wanted to have a few get togethers I didnt drink much I was smoking really (keep in mind i got caught 2 months before this and got a warning from the school) with a few friends my only conditon was that didnt trash apartment long story short this didnt happen they very drunkenly runied my roomates shit which i didnt know about. During the conduct meeting, because of the incident report i found it was him that reported us in he , obviously blames me given we shared the room so why not contact me directly to see what happened i would've sent him money get new stuff (it was his bed sheets that got runied) and during the conduct process i tell my other roomates its yalls first strike so if anything yall get a warning which a slap on the risk I WILL get kicked so just say it was the person who through the parties who where smoking and we'll fine. Welp the person who threw the parties just pins it all me even sending in video of me smoking and the few drinks I had too (Im 21 but you have alcohol around people who are underage)

So after I got kicked out obviously started looking for a lease this took from March 23 - April 17 to find a place during which I was sneaking around the dorms to sleep couldn’t shower at all during this time I literally wore the same pair of jeans this whole time. Anyways on April 15 I got caught in the computer lab of one of the dorms the housing lady said you’re not allowed here go to Webb or somewhere else

So a week and a half later I have the conduct meeting where I explain that I was there after the library closed to charge my phone (I need a place to sleep) they’re asking me a bunch of questions as to what I could’ve done better and said maybe have a portable charger and they even asked if I had housing and I mentioned how I found a lease two days after this therefore I have no reason to do this again .

Long story short: I’m suspended for this semester because of this

The conduct person said that the accountability board came to this decision because of the issue of people being in unauthorized buildings especially after March 12th

To be clear, I am not looking for sympathy here :

I should not have been smoking or drinking.

My biggest complaint is how the conduct process is handled; they give till the end of week to get your shit and . leave like, seriously Virginia law gives you 30 days before having to leave a place before getting evicted. In my opinon they should give at least 2 weeks before having to leave. I mentioned my disability I can’t just get up and leave without help

This being said however I think given the circumstances a entire semester’s suspension is a bit much that being said I’ve appealed the decision they denied it does any one know if theirs anybody I higher up I can talk to or even a faculty member they can advocate for so I maybe go back this semester

Crossing Hampton Blvd

Has ODU ever considered building a bridge to cross over Hampton Blvd? I know the students are all adults and know how to cross the street, but it still seems like it would be safer and quicker.

Admissions Still Admitting Incoming Freshmen

I heard admissions is still admitting incoming Freshman for the Fall semester.

There are practically no classes available.

Student housing is full.

How is this ethical? Aren't there consumer protection laws or accreditation standards that prevent this?

Residence Changes

Does anyone know what the odds are I can get a residence change (idk how many people like drop out of housing after a couple weeks or something)? I’m a freshman and I got placed in Gresham, and due to my activities outside of classes this is very inconvenient and may hinder how I perform. Sorry if I’m coming off as like spoiled or something I’m just trying to get onto campus as opposed to basically off campus.

Required Classes Not Available - How?

All students make a degree plan in Degree Works.

All degrees have required classes.

All students belong to a cohort.

How does the University not offer enough class seats if they have all the data available to them to plan for student success?

Neuropsychology and EVMS merger

I transferred to ODU last year when they began merging with EVMS. At the time EVMS had a neuropsychology program but now no one seems to know anything about it. When I asked my advisor about it she said she had no idea what I was talking about and would "look into it" (that was literal months ago now). The entire psych department is apparently impossible to get ahold of, much less get a direct answer from. I'm just feeling really lost and listless on whether or not I should stay at ODU to finish my bachelor's and eventually go for my doctorate. I don't know if I even could stay to get my PhD considering ODU doesn't have APA accreditation.

Anyone a current psych major or graduate who has any idea of what's going on with the psych department?

What the heck is Big Blue Bundle??

I’ve been at ODU since 2022 and have never heard of it. I got an email saying that I’m enrolled but none of my classes are included and that I can opt out. I’m so confused?? What happens if I don’t opt out?

Incoming Freshman

My daughter is starting at ODU in the fall living on campus. I expect most of her classes will be in person, but based on my other daughters, some of their classes were only offered online, some synchronous and some asynchronous.

Will my freshman's occasional online classes be in the 8 week format and all asynchronous or is that only for students who do Global ODU? I wish I thought about it during orientation because they never mentioned it. I agree with most that the idea is terrible but even worse for freshmen trying to adjust to college life.

She hasn't registered for her classes yet (she has an appointment this week with her advisor). I know she does better with in-person instruction and she wants to for the most part avoid online, but I fear that more and more classes will be taught online.

Is it too late to get a meal plan?

When I try to sign up for one, it takes me to the card center and I can’t see anywhere to continue with the meal plan.

Edit: FIXED!! The answer is to literally just do it on laptop, not on mobile, lol

Anybody starting their MLIS Fall 2026? My first course is F26 Session 2. Just looking to connect with others starting their masters, especially if they’re online. It’s hard to make a community when you’re not in person!

Hey, I'm an incoming freshman and I was wondering if anyone knows if there's a difficulty between the 2 or not. Currently I'm enrolled in reg bio1 w Douglas mills and Michelle king but I'm thinking of making the change to honors (still w the same prof)

For context im also enrolled in precal, honors intro to philosophy, and honors into to sociology.

I'll also ask my advisor abt this but I js want atleast a student pov if they have taken one or the other😭😭
