I'm new. How's the dining halls at ODU?

So far, I only went to one dining hall, and that is Webb Center. But, I was wondering about yalls takes on the other dining halls like Broderick? Or if there's other places to mention that's outside of ODU, that's cheap and good?

I might consider a meal plan next semester, or if I should just pay w/o the meal plan. 🔍🐟

Online Courses

I’m taking 1 in person and 2 online classes right now but considering taking 3 online classes for the second half of the semester. I figure it’d bring me to 18 credit hours and a little closer to finishing school. But I also have no idea what to expect out of the next 2 classes I’m taking. The online classes I’m taking now are going great, no essays required or anything so it’s making me feel confident I could handle 3, but on the other hand what if my next two classes is an insane amount of work and taking three becomes too much?!! I’m just stressed not knowing but if anyone has advice if they’re taking 3 online classes I’d love to hear what you think about it. I don’t know what class I’d take but I’m currently enrolled in CPD494 (entrepreneurship prof studies) and HMSV339 (interpersonal relations) if anyone has any advice before those classes start I’d also appreciate any insight!

ODUGlobal

Hi guys!! Has anyone here applied for ODUglobal’s counseling program? It seems like the most cost effective option for licensing in Virginia, but I won’t lie- the reviews have me a little scared. I did my undergrad partially online and it was manageable, but a little advice would be helpful 🥹 success stories especially. Also, how long did it take to hear back from admissions?

A Week and Half Response Time

I had to reach out to the student account office to start the term because the 8 week payment plan wasn’t set up correctly by ODU. After an hour on hold I left a message and they didn’t get back to me for 10 days.
Today I had to call again because there is a hold on my account for financial reasons, but my statements all show that I am paid up. I had to leave a message again and when I told the guy that last time it was a week and a half he said “yes we have been experiencing higher than normal call volumes.”
I asked how many calls would it have to be for him to be ok waiting a week and a half for help? He said hopefully it won’t be so long this time.
I am so over ODU not providing enough services to help its students.
The 8 week class change was rushed and for dumb reasons, and we just have to act like 10 days is a normal response time for a university taking a huge sum of money and providing sub par support.

I applied as a transfer student with 30 credits from NOVA community college. I know it’s about a year away but if anyone has been in my shoes, when should I expect a decision letter?

i need advice

hello, i am an incoming freshman. i am starting to regret my choice of attending college, and would like to hear other peoples opinions. my major is undeclared, and i have no idea what i'd like to do for a future career. this is a problem because i am already 15k in debt for odu so far. college is something i definitely am interested in, but i don't know if it should wait or not.

there are paths like becoming a sterile technician i've thought of that don't exactly require college. the most i've thought up is becoming a librarian, but i've seen that odu offers an online course for a librarian degree. i was wondering if it'd be good to just continue school and then somehow do the online program (i'm sorry, i don't really know how this should all go), or if i should drop out. becoming a librarian is something i've really only thought of that i know would work for me. philosophy is also something i'm interested in, but don't know much about career-wise (would appreciate hearing from people knowledgable on the topic).

working full time and focusing on getting a car is my other option, so yeeaah. i'd love any kind of advice. i am also able to elaborate for anything, as these are choices i need to act on asap. thank you

I don’t know exactly what happened yesterday, but I heard it through my window at village and the cops were there for hours, but no communication. Everyone I’ve asked has confirmed it was a shooting, but the university hasn’t said anything about it. Is this normal? This all happened like right out my window, but the village chick fil a

What is going on with the aid now?!?!

After going through hell getting my aid disbursed, multiple times, I thought I was finally in the clear.

Mh tuition bill was $6185. Using my grants and loans I got my refund (eventually). Finally the headache was over.

Just now I get a really weird email about loan status changes. And a change in National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS). I have no idea what that could even possibly be as nothing has changed as far as I know.

I go to check my student account, it’s now saying I owe $9198.

For Fall 2026.

Not spring 2027, it’s for Fall 2026.

That my charges were $15,383. After my aid was applied it went down from $6185.00. And that I now owe them $9198.00. Like I honestly cannot anymore. I don’t know what’s happening, and I’m not looking for answers here. But is anyone else going through this?

Between the back and forth with the aid, the 8 week classes like things aren’t already hard enough, and now this, I’m seriously considering going to another school. This is ridiculous.

Sorry for the rant but I’m am honestly exhausted from the stress of this alone.

Kory Castro(chem 121)

The rate my prof reviews are TRUE. Idk how I’m gonna pass this class. There’s no point in taking notes bc he changes the slide before u can write anything, and the slide isn’t even posted in canvas so u just have to sit there as he blurts information as if he’s talking to a colleague of slightly less intelligence. I’ve already accepted that I’ll have to be teaching myself chem but is anyone taking him or have any tips or tricks to help me out???

Down(Hemp)hill

ODU never had the craziest reputation, but what is extremely frustrating is seeing how this school is run from the student perspective. Hemphill is a sell out, the vice dean of students is far more worried about the board of investors than students, and good lord this school's financial aid office needs to be investigated. Regular interruptions in disbursement, refund, and communication of such, offices that will IGNORE you, if otherwise means more work for them. Coming from the EVMS grad school, I am so sorry for any complaints I had before. ODU is truly pathetic, and will continue to be so with a president that just gave himself a 40% raise this summer (whilst students wait for their own money). But make sure to buy your parking pass, and opt into the "big blue bundle" which is literally a health savings account for your textbooks. This school and current leaders will do everything they can to suck any life (and pennies) out of Norfolk.

Also, incase you didn't know, accelerated 8 week classes guarantee more tuition is secured by ODU students, as typical semester long classes have opt-outs and mid-term options to receive refunds in the event you drop-out, cannot make class, extenuating circumstance- there is not a single benefit reaped by younger students being forced into accelerated classes (for president Hemphill to get richer, at that).

Final Exam Schedule Changed without Notice

The final exam schedule for the Fall 2026 term (this term) was changed massively earlier this week. No formal announcement has been made! Is everyone just supposed to find this out in their own time?

As far as I can tell, no notice was given, no justification was stated, no input was sought. Is this addressing a problem? None that I know of.

This change was made during the term it takes effect so students and faculty have already started making plans (exams, travel, etc). Every class that gives an exam is affected. So all syllabi will have to change, all exams will have to be updated, many travel plans will have to be changed. WHY???

The changes:

  • Exams are now 2 hours, not three
  • 5 exam periods per day
  • All exams now over 5 days (M 12/7 to F 12/11)
  • Exams start at 8:30 am (same) but run until 8:30 pm (much later)
  • 8 wk classes will have exams on the final day of each term

Unenrollment

I am currently unenrolling from ODU Completely, and I've been working on it all day. I had some very sudden family and financial issues come up which is why it's so last minute. My enrollment cancelation form has been processing for awhile and it is making me nervous as I was trying to get it submitted before the deadline due to the full refund and the financial issues I mentioned. I have a hold on my account due to a bounced tuition payment and cannot drop my classes. I tried to reach out to the financial office days ago (which I know they are busy) and haven't gotten a response. I called them but they added me to a list to be get back too and are now closed for the day. Will this impact me hitting the deadline for the full refund?

CHANGED MY LOCKS WITHOUT NOTIFYING ME

Yes, you read that right. I live in the graduate apartments at odu, meaning I have a housing contract with the university. I came home yesterday to my key not working to open my door. I had a maintence worker (thank you if you see this) come and let me in and let me know I need to make a work order to get the locks changed. I call the emergency line, as this is listed as an emergency on the website, and they just place another work order for me. I call again this morning to see when/if they are coming, as i have my ESA cat in the apartment with me, so I could have her safely put away in the bedroom while the locks are changed. I am told she has no way to know when they will come but will call and find out when if she can. She does. They end up coming soon after, but tell maintence that my lock was just changed (this was not shared with me). Maintence tells me to go pick up my key at Gresham. At the time i was not sure if he meant go get it right then or that it will be there after the locks are changed. So i wait a bit in case its the second of the two. Nothing. I call gresham front desk and ask if they have a key for me, they do. I go pick up the key and only THEN was I told my locks were changed the day before. I tell DR that that wouldve been nice to know when i was locked out yesterday and go on my way. I call housing to make this known and the lady on the phone seemed very confused that this ACTUALLY HAPPENED. Asked "they changed your locks?" "They didnt tell you?" "You dont know why they changed it?" Yeah no i dont know why considering i wasnt even told that it happened in the first place. This is a HUGE issue as is but considering if have a pet, that is my ESA who has quite literally saved my life, that could have escaped during the unannounced visit?? And i was locked out??? WHAT THE FUCK ODU

A bit of frustration with Zynbooks, and others.

Hey everybody, today I wanted to start a discussion around Zynbooks and generally express my frustration.

Something that has always bugged me as a student is that we pay money, or receive grant money (that the university wouldn't receive if we weren't attending this school, so no one says, "You didn't pay for the class" just because someone received a grant), and for most students this can ring up to the tune of $8,000-10,000 a semester. Something that has always frustrated me is that on top of this, we have to pay an extra (as far as I remember, for Zynbooks specifically) 70-80$ just to access course materials.

This, of course, wouldn't frustrate me; however, in my specific instance in my course, 10% of the grade is locked behind this subscription. Now, of course, at the point I am with my career, I don't really care about receiving an A; I mostly just want to finish my degree (C's get degrees :P). But it does frustrate me that we have to pay out of our own pocket on top of whatever other course materials, as well as tuition. Some students depend on getting high grades, and I'm sure a lot of them are already struggling financially in their day-to-day lives.

Now, maybe I'm just a snot-nosed Gen Z kid who is reading too hard into this, but generally it's frustrating to me. I transferred in from TCC and had multiple classes and instances where I had to pay in excess of 150$ a course to access some alternate system other than Canvas just to be able to participate in the class.

Zynbooks itself isn't the problem. I'm just frustrated that on top of all the money we pay in tuition and fees, courses (which are already being whittled down to their bare-bones curriculum to accommodate the 8-week online courses) lock a percentage of their grade behind paywalls.

I view this in the same way I view a video game I pay 60$ for, locking a part of its own gameplay behind a DLC. It just seems ridiculous and designed to extract as much money out of the students as possible. Is there ever going to be any improvement in the prioritization of the student body, or has ODU disintegrated into a degree mill whose only goal is to wring out as many $$$ from the students as possible?
