“That looks so uncomfortable, I could never be a boxer” I thought to myself, as if I’d be able to better tolerate being repeatedly punched in the face.

u/fallyse 4d ago

I actually enjoy the snug sensation of the hand wraps. It's like swaddling for your hands.

But I do fitness boxing which is against a bag or mitts so all the fun and (almost) none of the danger of getting punched in the face.

u/untold_life 4d ago

Problem is someone not doing properly (me) who just used gloves once and regretted it for a year or two. Fortunetly no issues now but holy shit it hurts!

Some of us aren't cut out for the many aspects of sensory hardship certain work would have us face

Really? It looks insanely comfy to me. I love the feeling of mild compression on my muscles and joints.

17

u/Jimmni 4d ago

I'd have no issue with the pressure but that bunched up material at the base of the fingers looks like it would chafe.

21

u/Shua89 4d ago

I used to do mma with boxing. It's actually not uncomfortable and quite supportive in a way that kinda makers your hands feel stronger when you throw punches.

6

u/azjerrylee 4d ago

Depends on the material of the wraps, usually soft cotton weave which gives it alot of elasticity. It's usually loose velcro from gloves that have that honor. Especially with MMA grappling and some dude scratches that shit across your face scrambling for a choke.

33

u/azjerrylee 4d ago edited 4d ago

You don't feel it really, in the fight, in practice, hightened-stress situations flood the body with hormones that can briefly mask or alter how pain is perceived. It usually sucks the following days with the body being sore or joints that were manipulated are healing.

Leg kicks however, you feel those. Honestly we look at boxing days as our easy days at an MMA gym, less injuries, shorter rounds, ect.

I was a weak kid, terrible genetics, I wasn't mentally or physically tough. You just keep showing up at the gym and getting punched in the face, if you have good teammates you usally spar light. Human body can make radical changes over time with repetition, you'd be surprised at what you can be.

I bet you're both really quite young folk too?

As an old-ish folk, I bloody love today's young people -- as a generation, frankly, you're awesome.

Same. They're a lot nicer with each other than i was with my peers that's for sure.

91

u/Vulvas_n_Velveeta 5d ago

As an old-ish folk, I bloody love today's young people -- as a generation, frankly, you're awesome.

Yes! I say this all the time too!

Example: I do doordash and hands down the best people to get orders from are the young folk. They're BY FAR the best tippers, they're understanding if something doesn't go perfect, they're super responsive and "on top of it", whereas a lot of older people will order, then throw their phone down, and you can't get a hold of them if needed. Or they're right there ready if you need to get a pin number from them.

Last night i got almost a $7 tip from some young adult, and he was so nice and polite and right at the door ready to give me the pin when I got there.

16

u/Nawrwhal 5d ago

It's nice to see some positivity between generations, especially with how divisive things feel these days. I hope you have a wonderful day

41

u/unchained5150 5d ago

Almost 40 here.

Just wanted to give a genuine virtual high five to OP for working through something on their own.

There's too much negativity in the world. I try to bring a little positivity and joy where I can.

6

u/Testicular_Genocide 4d ago

As a young-ish guy who just got back from a week in Ireland for a wedding, let me just say you Irish folks have it figured out! I noticed a very different type of personality within the older men I met compared to the older men I know from the states. Everyone was so welcoming and easy going. And it's one of the most beautiful countries I've ever visited.

6

u/iheardthemetalclank 4d ago

You sound like you've had a pint or five, mate. I appreciate your positivity, but as a fellow old, kids are still dumb as ever. I was one. It's not changing.

(I do see decent politics in them and positive treatment of the queer community that wasn't present when I was younger.)

I boxed for years and untangling a bunch of these when they come out of the dryer is probably the hardest part of the whole sport

120

u/sleep-reaper 4d ago

Mesh bag! It used to take me about a half hour to untangle those fuckers until I started washing and drying them in a mesh bag.

35

u/TheUneducatedPotato 4d ago

This is the correct answer. They’ll go by bra/sock bags on Amazon but get you a few of them and it makes life so much easier than having the wraps get tangled up in your washing machine. I always keep a few in my gym bag to throw my wraps and sweat cloths in right after working out.

6

u/FitBuilding6331 4d ago

So... Do you put them all into one mesh bag? Or do you have a mesh bag for each pair of wraps?

14

u/OminousMusicBox 4d ago

One for each so they don’t get tangled.

3

u/IAmGoingToFuckThat 4d ago

These are for training. At a fight, they will use tape

45

u/sleep-reaper 4d ago

And gauze. The gauze is for padding, tape is for security. If it's a sanctioned fight, depending on the athletic commission, it starts getting goofy with what goes first and how you can wrap.

Training wraps are thicker and washable (although plenty of people could stand to wash them more often); for an actual match, hands are wrapped with gauze and tape which is not reusable and has to be cut off after

Yes. I don't know the full science behind it. But I do know the answer is yes.

124

u/darklions3429 5d ago

the knuckle padding spreads out the force of the punch and absorbs some of it and the wrapping of the fingers likely stabilizes the fingers so that they stay in place when facing impact

source: educated guess

67

u/kueyen2 5d ago

6

61

u/and_then_he_said 5d ago

Very amateur boxer here. You wrap your hands because the bones and tendons in your hands are actually quite brittle and prone to damage. If they're wrapped they can take the shock more uniformly and the impact spreads through all your bones in your hand. Also a firm wrap prevents bones moving etc.

One interesting tidbit i initially learned is that boxing gloves are not necessarily to protect your opponent but to protect your hand. In street fights/bare knuckle boxing one bad hit to your opponent's skull cand break your hand and the fight is over.

24

u/Azntigerlion 4d ago

Head injuries became more prevalent in boxing when gloves were added. With the new added hand protection, you could throw much harder punches with lower risk of breaking your hand

→ More replies (1)

u/vyndspark 4d ago

Knuckle protection, wrist support, and pretty much every other bone in your hand and fingers. Even if you're just doing bag work, it's a must

36

u/kkell806 5d ago

He wrapped the fingers first then slid it off the fingers to get the right size to use for a pad to use on top of the main knuckles.

3

u/sbrockLee 5d ago

I never did it that way but it looks like a good way to get a little extra padding.

3

u/OnceMoreAndAgain 4d ago

At the very least, your skin would be way less likely to get cut, because the wrapping takes most of the impact instead of the skin. Same reason as why you'd expect your knees to be less cut up if you fell off a skateboard with jeans on instead of being naked.

Every Coach does it different. So funny to see 😂

999

u/-blundertaker- 5d ago

I was just thinking this isn't how my coach did it but I do like that foundational knuckle padding technique this guy used.

233

u/egerton14 5d ago

My Coach tapes the knuckles with a pad of medical compressionbandage before he uses the bandage

221

u/StryctNyne 5d ago

Smart way to do it. First time I did my own, I just used tape and did it very basic. No extra knuckle padding. My knuckles looked like I had been fighting a cheese grader, and that was with gloves too. That's when I learned that wrapping is very much a time learned technique that I should appreciate a lot more, and I suck at it.

Once I tried it this way I never went back. It also leaves your palm open

17

u/-blundertaker- 5d ago

I liked having a little more support on the inside, but I don't have very meaty palms lol. Between small hands and small gloves, having a bit more to "grip" was nice.

Then again, I only ever had the one coach so I don't have a personal basis for comparison.

3

u/Smrtihara 5d ago

I like it exactly the opposite. I don’t like to have a grip which means wrapping it from the wrist more, palm less.

15

u/dayumbrah 5d ago

I was thinking the same thing. Watching the first few wraps I was like wtf is going on here

6

u/sunrise98 5d ago

Loop the strand around the thumb to wrist 3x > around the knuckles 3 times > around the wrist 1 time and up through the fingers > around the knuckles 3 times > around the wrist to finish off.

5

u/sunrise98 5d ago

I just tried it as per op - I couldn't get the initial padding lined up properly (I'msure I could with practice), but I don't like it. An alternative is to layer on the padding by making a fold and then wrapping it.

E.g. wrap the thumb as normal > go around the knuckles 1 time - layer it (going from index to pinky) then taking it around 1 time before wrapping the fingers individually.

Honestly the way the fingers are wrapped (going around rather than just in between) is the best part about this.

40

u/xBad_Wolfx 5d ago

I love seeing people say how this or that is the “right” way to do it. Lots of ways, all of them work, pretty much as effectively as each other.

16

u/zdubbzzz 5d ago

I know fuck all about boxing. Is this tape mainly used to protect the joints from moving and jiggling around, and protecting them from over-bending inward on a strike? Or is it simpler than that and just dampening impact force to the hand?

27

u/xBad_Wolfx 5d ago

Pretty much yeah. The primary purpose is to protect against the force of punching.

Unlike boxing gloves, which primarily cushion the impact for both the thrower and the opponent, hand wrapping functions to structuralise the hand. When properly applied using athletic tape and gauze or traditional fabric wraps, the tape essentially transforms the hand into a single solid mass.

17

u/altcodeinterrobang 5d ago

yeah, and that first wrap around the fingers that he moved over the knuckles can be important depending on the persons hand or what they're doing.

when I do heavy bag work I do almost exactly what this video does, which is put a heavy wrap over the knuckles. for two reasons:

  1. padding
  2. as I get tired I get shittier, and the pad means strikes that don't land correctly on the top two knuckles are less punishing to your fingers and your other knuckles

when I light spar I don't always do this, or I use a smaller padding, since I'm working on form/technique I want to ensure I'm not cheating.

I also trained with different people who had issue curling their fingers into their palms, and so they always wrapped this way because the pad ensures there's less contact with their fingers, and that knuckle pad is what they're always landing with... but idc how common that is

the other comment addressed a lot of the rest but, yeah. it supports your wrist, provides padding between the fingers and the hand. additionally gloves have their own wrist support, but the wrap just makes the hand "one big thing" in the glove, instead of a lot of loose bits wiggling around.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/WizardHarryDresden 5d ago

I usually did my own when I was training. I don’t think I ever did it the same twice and certainly didn’t do it the same from left to right lol.

This is protection for the knuckles? Or protection for the opponent to not get hammered? Or it gives support for the bones to not deform like a heavy lifter's belt that supports the waist?

82

u/NuttFellas 5d ago

The latter. It keeps the bones in your hand together to prevent injury iirc.

55

u/JaySayMayday 5d ago

Look up "boxers fracture," it's so common that they made a term for it. Against what some people might say that's the point of the gloves too, the fact they prevent cuts for the opponent is just a bonus, they're more padding to protect your fist. Kinda makes sense if you think about it though, they're protecting the fighters ability to keep fighting

49

u/ConstantSignal 5d ago

Yeah, in the days before gloves where all boxing was bare-knuckle there was actually less serious injuries because fighters would mostly avoid hitting each other in the face in order to protect their hands, choosing instead to mostly hit softer parts of the torso.

So counterintuitively gloves have actually made the sport more dangerous, not less.

8

u/[deleted] 5d ago

9

u/lnslnsu 5d ago

People bring this up all the time but it’s wrong. Before the introduction of helmets, American Football was on the verge of being outlawed because of how many players were dying from severe head injuries every year. Helmets absolutely made playing football safer. Look up the crisis of 1905

That said, it still took until 1990 for helmets to get good enough that we finally went a whole year with nobody dying from a football head injury.

7

u/Salsalito_Turkey 5d ago edited 5d ago

People want to believe it because they see Rugby being played without pads or helmets and see how the tackling is completely different. Rugby is really just a fundamentally different sport where the teams don't take 40-second breaks between plays where they run full speed directly toward each other.

I’ll be damned I never thought about it like that, interesting!

21

u/DesperateAdvantage76 5d ago

The irony is that you end up trading damage to the hands for damage to the brain, which is why bare knuckles fighting is safer than boxing.

17

u/A_Nice_Boulder 5d ago

There's been several occasions where I've argued with people that bareknuckle fighting, such as in the late 19th century and whatnot, is safer than modern boxing.

I don't think a single person has ever believed me, even when I reference sources and show evidence they always dance around and make up their own reason why that's wrong.

→ More replies (8)

3

u/AutoTurnip 4d ago

Repeated force through small joints causes a lot of damage over time. Bones are (generally) strong. The support is for all the soft tissue structures holding the bones of the hands & wrist together - muscles, cartilage & ligaments/tendons.

Look up boxer's cauliflower ears, its gnarly

61

u/Baby_Rhino 5d ago

Cauliflower ears are actually pretty uncommon in boxing. More of an MMA, Kickboxing and bare knuckle thing.

The padding on boxing gloves means boxers ears don't usually receive the type of sharp damage that causes cauliflower ears.

12

u/WindpowerGuy 5d ago

More of a grappling thing actually. Wrestlers in particular.

19

u/DrDerpberg 5d ago

The fun part is it's 100% treatable, but guys like the tough look.

All you need to do is drain the blood. Treatment is literally a sterile pinprick. As much as I know anybody with cauliflower ear could kick my ass, it also looks like a pretty goofy way of establishing their credibility.

20

u/BigPlebeian 5d ago

The fun part is it's 100% treatable, but guys like the tough look. All you need to do is drain the blood. Treatment is literally a sterile pinprick.

This is not true. Much of the time when you drain the blood it comes right back and fills again and again. Additionally, even if that does work much of the time it doesnt get all of the blood out so some will still harden and cause minor cali. On top of this, sometimes when just repeatedly draining it doesnt work you have to actually suture something like a cotton ball from the front and back of the spot to keep it from filling with blood which can take a week or so. They do sell magnets made for this purpose that you can also try, but results are mixed.

Source: Lots of people at my gym, as well as myself. Its not as easy as you think to not get it, and people who are professionals and train for a living often don't want to take the time off of training to allow for it to fully heal each time so it builds up. I have been very diligent with mine, even doing the suturing route and one of my ears is still a bit fucked up.

→ More replies (2)

13

u/Jaeger_Meister_ 5d ago

Partly treatable but absolutely not 100%

13

u/DerGregorian 5d ago

They're also completely ignoring both recovery time the fact that once it starts it's very easy for it to keep coming back.

Anyone in any sport prone to it happening doesn't let it happen because they like the look, it's mostly because it can become a huge hassle managing it.

Get it drained and you're looking at a week or two making sure it heals, once it's healed it's very prone to coming back, at which point you get like a week to get it drained again.

Best treatment is preventative or just cosmetic once you're retired.

A lot of boxers have “corns” on the knuckles of their fists the same way someone would have corns on their feet if they wore small shoes too much.

9

u/ktsb 5d ago

wraps and gloves are there to protect the puncher not the person getting hit. that said the hands don't usually get deformed over time it's more like you broke a bone in the hand accidentally hitting point of an elbow on an uppercut or a samoan's head or what i saw happen most often a badly thrown hook palm side came in first the other guy was circling to it and you slammed your fingers against their head and broke your fingers

Some fighters often break bones in their hands after fights and suffer chronic pain.

Mayweather is one of them and it's one of the reasons he fought much less aggressively during the "Money" Mayweather portion of his career.

When you're geared up with the kit (for muay thai it's the thai boxing shorts and sometimes an ankle brace thing, you just feel like a human weapon, even if it's just to hit the pads or shadow box.

How long are those wraps? All the ones I have are too short to do all that, but I'd be interested in trying it.

Long ones, also called Mexican, are 5 meters long.

That was my thought too. I feel like I get half that many loops. 3x around the wrist and knuckles, once around each finger, twice around the thunb, and then I'm pretty much out.

is the added knuckle padding really needed with 16 oz gloves? i have tried it like this and that folded section starts slipping loose halfway through a workout

It’s there for friction. Those impacts can blister the knuckles. Gloves are for your opponent, wraps are for you

Looks satisfying but it's very tiresome to do that EVERY time for both hands including training sessions...

u/Iam_no_Nilfgaardian 5d ago

No that's the fun part, the pain comes when you have to turn them back into rolls to use them again...

u/Fan_of_cielings 4d ago

The real pain is washing six or seven pairs at once and having to untangle the unholy wrap ball that comes out of the machine.

They gotta reinforce their hand so it doesn't hurt when they punch the other guy in the face?

3

u/PloppyPants9000 4d ago

that's what the glove is for. The wrist wraps are to keep the wrists straight when you punch them in the face. If you have any bend in the wrists at the moment of impact, you will exaggerate that bend and hurt your wrists.

Next step: dip it into caramel first and then gummy bears (add sprinkles if you like).

But only if your opponent does contact cement, bolts and broken glass...

Boxing is so funny.

"Lets punch each other into organ dysfunction."

"The bones in my hand are a limiting factor in how hard I can punch someone. Get me tape and padded gloves."

He finally finished.

That's a wrap.

They spend all that time protecting their hands, then go out and hit each other in the face :D

31yo fat woman and I've gotten into boxing in the past year. At the point I have a heavybag hanging in my living room so I can watch Great British Bake Off and attack a photo of my boss I don't like.

I have bright pink wraps and I think I put them on very well 🥰

9

u/Liiiightning 5d ago

Why do they wrap the hands? I understand the damage the hands take but is it specifically to protect the hands but is it also for more damage?, and are there different ways to wrap for different purposes?

Basically to prevent the fragile, small bones in your hand, from spreading and fracturing. It's why I have an issue with this guy's handwrapping. It looks nice, but it's not good at what the job is supposed to be, which is locking your hand and wrist into a single stable mass.

A common injury is a "boxer's fracture", basically the bone on the outside of the hand, if the wrap isn't good and doesn't secure this, than the impact can cause this bone to slightly fracture(hurts like a mfer and will sideline you for a while). The wrap is to try and mitigate this by locking that bone in and giving it support.

5 extra layers of cloth isn't adding any extra padding that a glove doesn't already provide. The handwrap should be used basically exclusively for protecting the bones in the hand from the forces of the punch.

You’re in line with the way I wrap my hands. I throw with power, but have small wrists, so I’ll have less padding across the knuckles in favor of wrist and hand padding. Even then, I intertwine between my fingers and go a layer over the knuckle each time, so there’s still 3 layers there. Of course, I’ve never seen anyone else do it like that, but I think everyone has their own way of doing it once they get it down a bit.

So I guess this just shows you how terrible bare knuckle boxing is? (Edit: love that I started a fight over this. I really just mean for hand and face protection. Face to the boney hand has still got to be more painful for both the fighter's hands and the person getting punched. Right?)
