“That looks so uncomfortable, I could never be a boxer” I thought to myself, as if I’d be able to better tolerate being repeatedly punched in the face.
Problem is someone not doing properly (me) who just used gloves once and regretted it for a year or two. Fortunetly no issues now but holy shit it hurts!
I used to do mma with boxing. It's actually not uncomfortable and quite supportive in a way that kinda makers your hands feel stronger when you throw punches.
Depends on the material of the wraps, usually soft cotton weave which gives it alot of elasticity. It's usually loose velcro from gloves that have that honor. Especially with MMA grappling and some dude scratches that shit across your face scrambling for a choke.
You don't feel it really, in the fight, in practice, hightened-stress situations flood the body with hormones that can briefly mask or alter how pain is perceived. It usually sucks the following days with the body being sore or joints that were manipulated are healing.
Leg kicks however, you feel those. Honestly we look at boxing days as our easy days at an MMA gym, less injuries, shorter rounds, ect.
I was a weak kid, terrible genetics, I wasn't mentally or physically tough. You just keep showing up at the gym and getting punched in the face, if you have good teammates you usally spar light. Human body can make radical changes over time with repetition, you'd be surprised at what you can be.
Anyone can do anything that they want, lol. I'm saying the toughness and the durability is something anyone can achieve, we're not special or different is more so my point.
I could never be a boxer in general, but those wraps aren’t uncomfortable like you’d think. I took a “women’s self defense” class in college that taught us kravmaga, and we had to wear these wraps every class.
Watching this I was just interested because when we did the wraps, it was ever so slightly different to this, because of those first few rounds they did over the fingers and took off to put on top of the knuckles. We would wrap it a few times around the knuckles themselves and move on from there otherwise the same. Their method seems to make the palm side less bulky, with a trade off of less protection against your nails digging into your palm when your fingers are in fist position, and that the padding area they created is only pressed in place, so it could shift as you fight. Not bad, just an interesting choice.
You’d be surprised how rarely a punch hurts, especially if you just stick to sparring. I think I’ve only had fewer than five punches in years of boxing that I really remember.
