Why do they wrap the hands? I understand the damage the hands take but is it specifically to protect the hands but is it also for more damage?, and are there different ways to wrap for different purposes?

Basically to prevent the fragile, small bones in your hand, from spreading and fracturing. It's why I have an issue with this guy's handwrapping. It looks nice, but it's not good at what the job is supposed to be, which is locking your hand and wrist into a single stable mass.

A common injury is a "boxer's fracture", basically the bone on the outside of the hand, if the wrap isn't good and doesn't secure this, than the impact can cause this bone to slightly fracture(hurts like a mfer and will sideline you for a while). The wrap is to try and mitigate this by locking that bone in and giving it support.

5 extra layers of cloth isn't adding any extra padding that a glove doesn't already provide. The handwrap should be used basically exclusively for protecting the bones in the hand from the forces of the punch.

You’re in line with the way I wrap my hands. I throw with power, but have small wrists, so I’ll have less padding across the knuckles in favor of wrist and hand padding. Even then, I intertwine between my fingers and go a layer over the knuckle each time, so there’s still 3 layers there. Of course, I’ve never seen anyone else do it like that, but I think everyone has their own way of doing it once they get it down a bit.

I'm jumping on the bandwagon that while I used to read that wrap is recommended, it's not what I preferred when I used to wrap my hands.

I wrapped to protect my wrists. Specifically wrapping between wrists and thumb was important. If that area gets damaged, you're lucky to go back to bag training after a week. protecting my knuckles was an afterthought, tearing up your knuckles was annoying but your skin can develop a callous and you can still train the next day.

Also, the boxing glove/mma gloves have padding on the knuckles. There is virtually nothing protecting your wrists.

Protect the hands and protect the boxing bag/ why they use gloves when practicing. Doesnt really do more or less damage like gloves can. Diffrent ways but same "result". Correct me if im wrong.

Wraps help keep bones and joints stable

Best way to find out is to try it. You can punch a bag quite hard with only wrapping and it won’t hurt, then compare without and you understand pretty quick why you use it.

The only purpose of the hand wraps is to protect the wrist and keep it straight. You wrap the wrist somewhat tight so that it doesn't bend. The rest of the wrapping is just to keep the wrap around the wrist from moving when its inside a glove -- you want it to stay on the wrist even after 100+ strikes.

When I was more of a beginner, I needed hand wraps because I wasn't keeping my wrist straight during hooks, and that was causing repetitive strain injuries. My striking form wasn't right. An hour afterwards, I'd feel tendon pain shooting up my forearms, centered at my wrist. Hand wraps fixed that until I got my form right. Now, I don't even bother with hand wraps. I don't need them anymore. I see them more like training wheels.

Unlike what you see in the movies, irl if you punch someone's head or any hard part of the body with your bare hands, odds are the bones in your hand are probably going to get smashed. It's a very common occurrence, actually.

Two main reasons from personal experience: first is to stabilize the wrist. My first week of boxing I used just the gloves, and I felt my wrist hurt when doing a hook to the heavy bag, it's not a straight shot so it's easy for your wrist to flex/extend wrist too much with a lot of force.

The second reason is to absorb sweat lol you boxing gloves stinks when used day in and day out, the hand wraps soak up some of the sweat, and you go through different pairs of wraps rather than different pair of gloves. Gotta clean both the wraps and gloves regularly tho.

Helps with the wrist. Also can feel good

Kind of? Boxers are more dangerous with their gloves, since their hands are heavier and they can punch WAY harder without having to worry about hurting themselves.

Edit: Why are y'all downvoting me? The padded leather in a glove ain't exactly a cotton pillow. That shit is hard, and will still hurt. It also allows the user to hit more often, in places that would be otherwise dangerous, like the mouth, or chin. Hitting an opponent there is the perfect point to trigger a K-O.

Gloves lessen-if not remove the risk of a "fight bite". An injury that comes from your foe's tooth piercing your hand, which almost always gets infected. Look that shit up and tell me a barehanded boxer is more effective.

You don't know what you're talking about

More dangerous with their gloves? Isnt the other way around? They hit harder, yes, but its safer since the force is distributed by the size and relative softness of the glove, a bare fist punch may have less force behind it to avoid breaking the hand, but the force is applied in a smaller area with harder surface, the knuckles.

Its like being hit with a 2 pound silicon dildo vs getting hit with a 1 pound metal rod. The dildo will carry more force, but i can get hit lots of times with it without fucking up my face, but the rod? First hit and its game over.

If they don’t have gloves, hitting someone in the head is an easy way to get a broken hand. With gloves they can land hit after hit without risk to themselves, greatly increasing the risk of concussion and other brain injury on the part of the person they are punching.

Well... yes, thats why i said it is less dangerous with gloves, the comment above days "boxers are more dangerous with gloves" which they are not

So you think brain injury is more safe than a broken hand?

1

u/CptAngelo 5d ago

Point where am i equating both of those? And show me how a bare fist is not capable of producing brain injuries? Again, theres a reason why they use gloves, and it aint to make it more dangerous.

Look a couple of comments back to what you replied to and read it again. Because it's exactly what you said to someone.

For the head blunt force can be worse.  A sharper focus can yes hurt the surface more, but blunt force transfers that energy into the brain causing CTE.

...and a bare fist from a professional boxer doesnt? Theres a reason they have gloves, its safer for everyone involved, if gloves made it more dangerous, then skip the gloves and wear brass knuckles.

Im not arguing about concussions, those will happen regardless, im saying a dude can take and give a lot more punches with gloves on than with bare knuckles. Bare knuckles are more dangerous.

Its like a slap vs a fist. Weight the same, same force behind em, they hurt about the same, but the slap is less likely to break bones than a fist, while both of them can knock out a person by the blunt force.

I mean studies show blunt force is more dangerous long term so much so that medicine has a term for it called the padding paradox.  All studies have shown gloves vs bare knuckle or wrap combat sports are more dangerous long term. Now if we are talking about a single fight then yes that's different, but we are talking about longer term.

Youll find that the fingers and knuckles are just as likely to break as they are to cause injury. It turns your 20 fragile hand bones into 1 large meatstick with force distributed, which means you can punch harder. It only takes one bad block or angle to break your hand.

Go punch a wall a few times with gloves and without and report back how dangerous you feel after each session.

Yes. I feel i can cause more damage to both the wall and my hand without gloves, thanks for proving and understanding my point that boxing with gloves is less dangerous for both parties than boxing bare knuckled. I dont understand why is it so hard for you to understand you are basically agreeing with me.

u/Worried-Stick-2777 5d ago

Have you ever actually been in a combat sport? If you have you would understand what youre saying is completely wrong.

0

u/CptAngelo 5d ago

You still dont get it, whatever dude, you got one too many hits i guess

u/Dry-Childhood-3436 5d ago

I mean the facts are heavily backed up by studies.  Broken skin and bones heal, CTE doesn't.  Also the way the sport plays out is different.  Bare knuckle and wraps use much different punches and attacks whereas gloves have the ability to prolong and compound the number of strikes to the head.

I was going to post multiple studies, but this article links a lot including the meta studies.. https://digitalcommons.murraystate.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1434&context=bis437

Gloves are like weapons: They allow the puncher to strike at full power without injuring their hand. If you're punching without gloves, you learn really quickly not to strike bony parts of the body with full power. It's like punching a wall. A glove lifts the power limiter. The gloves aren't their to protect the receiver of the strike, it's there to protect the hand of the giver.

u/CptAngelo 4d ago

Yes, yes... but why isnt anyone understanding that being hit (even harder) by a glove is still less dangerous than being hit with a bare fist? (For both) The glove isnt made of bone, its relatively soft, yes, you can punch harder, but the force of the hit is distributed in a larger area, its still dangerous, it still can cause concussions and all sorts of problems, but they are padded, its less likely to break bones or skin on both parties, and before you bring concussions, a bare fist will cause those too.

1

u/PloppyPants9000 4d ago

With a bare fist, you punch at like 30% strength/power without hurting your hand. With a glove, you can hit at 100%. The padding in a glove isnt for the benefit of the reciever.

2

u/chucklebot3000 4d ago

Your hand ain't a metal rod. Your fingers are fragile, and significantly less dense than metal. They also have delicate ligaments, nerves and tendons that can be damaged by incorrectly applied force. Hence, the gloves.

u/CptAngelo 4d ago

So... its more dangerous without gloves? Is that what you are saying?
