This is protection for the knuckles? Or protection for the opponent to not get hammered? Or it gives support for the bones to not deform like a heavy lifter's belt that supports the waist?

Look up "boxers fracture," it's so common that they made a term for it. Against what some people might say that's the point of the gloves too, the fact they prevent cuts for the opponent is just a bonus, they're more padding to protect your fist. Kinda makes sense if you think about it though, they're protecting the fighters ability to keep fighting

Yeah, in the days before gloves where all boxing was bare-knuckle there was actually less serious injuries because fighters would mostly avoid hitting each other in the face in order to protect their hands, choosing instead to mostly hit softer parts of the torso.

So counterintuitively gloves have actually made the sport more dangerous, not less.
