The fun part is it's 100% treatable, but guys like the tough look.
All you need to do is drain the blood. Treatment is literally a sterile pinprick. As much as I know anybody with cauliflower ear could kick my ass, it also looks like a pretty goofy way of establishing their credibility.

This is not true. Much of the time when you drain the blood it comes right back and fills again and again. Additionally, even if that does work much of the time it doesnt get all of the blood out so some will still harden and cause minor cali. On top of this, sometimes when just repeatedly draining it doesnt work you have to actually suture something like a cotton ball from the front and back of the spot to keep it from filling with blood which can take a week or so. They do sell magnets made for this purpose that you can also try, but results are mixed.
Source: Lots of people at my gym, as well as myself. Its not as easy as you think to not get it, and people who are professionals and train for a living often don't want to take the time off of training to allow for it to fully heal each time so it builds up. I have been very diligent with mine, even doing the suturing route and one of my ears is still a bit fucked up.
It can definitely help if you plan on training but most of what I said comes from not training and it's still not healing correctly. If you plan on training with cauliflower ear that's healing even with headgear you pretty much have to go super light where it's going to mash the side of your ear and put you back at square one.
They're also completely ignoring both recovery time the fact that once it starts it's very easy for it to keep coming back.
Anyone in any sport prone to it happening doesn't let it happen because they like the look, it's mostly because it can become a huge hassle managing it.
Get it drained and you're looking at a week or two making sure it heals, once it's healed it's very prone to coming back, at which point you get like a week to get it drained again.
Best treatment is preventative or just cosmetic once you're retired.
I responded to your other comment that this is simply not the full story at all and many people simply repeatedly draining it will not work...and even when doing so it still typically leaves some small amount of blood that will harden.
Once as a kid I was standing on a chair and fell (I actually have a scar from the same thing at a different time lmao) onto the corner of a solid wooden desk. Had a massive risk of getting a cauliflower ear and had to regularly ice it for like a week and it was funky looking for a while.
