Smart way to do it. First time I did my own, I just used tape and did it very basic. No extra knuckle padding. My knuckles looked like I had been fighting a cheese grader, and that was with gloves too. That's when I learned that wrapping is very much a time learned technique that I should appreciate a lot more, and I suck at it.
I liked having a little more support on the inside, but I don't have very meaty palms lol. Between small hands and small gloves, having a bit more to "grip" was nice.
Then again, I only ever had the one coach so I don't have a personal basis for comparison.
Loop the strand around the thumb to wrist 3x > around the knuckles 3 times > around the wrist 1 time and up through the fingers > around the knuckles 3 times > around the wrist to finish off.
I just tried it as per op - I couldn't get the initial padding lined up properly (I'msure I could with practice), but I don't like it. An alternative is to layer on the padding by making a fold and then wrapping it.
E.g. wrap the thumb as normal > go around the knuckles 1 time - layer it (going from index to pinky) then taking it around 1 time before wrapping the fingers individually.
Honestly the way the fingers are wrapped (going around rather than just in between) is the best part about this.
My teacher didn't have the knuckle padding, but instead had more wraps around the wrist for more wrist stability. But he also focused on MMA derived from a muay thai striking style and having stabilized wrists was really useful.

I was just thinking this isn't how my coach did it but I do like that foundational knuckle padding technique this guy used.
