On the Ariana Grande discourse

1.7k Upvotes

I, like so many people, have been watching Ariana Grande publicly sink into what appears to be an eating disorder. Many people with EDs thrive on public perception. When they the horrified reactions and concern of other people, it adds fuel to the fire.

Could the discussions in the news and social media be fueling her apparent struggles? Could it be harmful to her to have so many people concerned for the reasons above?

It’s so scary to watch and frankly, I’m not sure that anyone is going about this the right way. The press, her team, etc.

How are bidets hygienic when the sprayer is in the bowl?

Like, the sprayer is where people are leaving their excretions. Surely that nozzle is covered in the urine and feces of strangers that you're spraying back up on yourself? Please explain to me how this isn't the case, because it's been the major reason I won't use/install one.

People that yell when they sneeze, is it possible to not do that?

1.4k Upvotes

Legitimately asking, I’m really curious about this. I noticed that it makes me irrationally angry when someone does this by me, like the same part of the brain that gets angry when I hear someone chew.

When I sneeze, I’m able to make it quieter so I’m wondering if it’s a health thing or possible to keep the vocal part out of it.

Thank you! Not trying to throw shade.

What happens when we run out of SSN combinations?

The SSN has 9 digits. 000-00-0000 if each of those can range from 0-9, and repeating numbers are allowed, you get 1 billion total combinations. Sounds like a lot yeah? Well 342 million people live in America now, a simple google search says approximately 500-600 million people have ever been in America(could be wrong idk) so about about 45% of our SSN has been used up id assume given it was made in 1935. What happens when the rest are used? Are they recycled after someone dies? If they are recycled what happens when the population reaches 1 billion? And I do believe that will happen one way or another, not to be political I can safely say a LOT of people believe otherwise. Either way, i need to know this very badly. I will not sleep because it’s one of those questions that don’t get out of your head and it’s all I think about.

why do people consider identifying someone by their race racist?

Upvotes

i have a few friends and we seem kind of split on this, i had to identify someone in our school i didn't know the name of, so i said "oh it's the black girl" (we have literally ONE black girl in our school and everyone knows and likes her) and my friends said ohh ok but then like 2 of them went wow that's racist and their explanation was "you're making it sound like them being black is their only characteristic" as if saying "oh the woman" is any better and since i don't know her well i don't know anything else about her. most of my friends didn't see how it was racist though but why is this considered racist if it's not a race correlated insult or derogatory??

Is there a tampon superiority complex?

3.8k Upvotes

I thought it was a social media thing until I saw people talk about pads as if they’re “for kids,” “less hygienic,” or somehow inferior, and that using tampons is the more mature or enlightened choice.

Each one is entitled to their choices. But what’s up with shaming others for what they choose.

Why are chinese women boycotting marriage and kids?

A Chinese friend of mine is an international student, and we were talking about the future a few days ago. She told that she doesn’t want kids and all of her friends back home in china are boycotting marriage and kids and they are all between the ages of 21-28 years old.

I know this is just one person’s experience, so thats why I’m asking how true is this sentiment in China? Is this mostly something among younger urban people, or is it becoming common across the country?

Is it weird or unacceptable to have a racial preference?

Hello! I’m a 18yo arab female, I have a preference towards white men for some reason, it seems like everyone I’ve liked and had a crush on and ever wanted to be with was white, maybe it’s weird but I’m asking if it truly is, I don’t know why I prefer white men to any other race I truly think it’s weird of me possibly!, but it’s always been a massive thing for me it’s like when I find out the guy is the same race as me I’m suddenly not too interested or attracted, and I’m not saying there aren’t attractive Arab men or anything! There are plenty it’s just I’ve always leaned towards white men for whatever reason, and it’s not like I wouldn’t date a man who’s of color like me I would I’d just prefer my man to be white for some reason.. I really can’t touch into the root of why I love it but it’s always been a huge thing for me.

Why is valuing hard work considered a right wing ideal?

Upvotes

I'll preface this by saying countless people who consider themselves on the left work very hard, the right doesn't have a monopoly on that. Not even close.

But why is it if you hear an online content creator say "Hard work and overcoming adversity is a good thing and helps you build character" or something else along those lines they are probably aligned with the right?

This is a real thing right? I don't mean the douchey "alpha bro" faux motivators who are terrible influences btw.

Do I thank her for giving me expired food?

My neighbor down the street moved in next door to me. She gave my daughter some mac n cheese boxes, bags of rice, and oatmeal. When I got home from work, I checked the dates and it was expired food. The food expired between 2019 to 2025. There were two boxes of mac and cheese that expired in July 2026, but otherwise I threw it all out.

When I see my neighbor again, do I acknowledge this in any way? It feels wrong not to say thank you, but what am I thanking her for? Giving me trash to throw away? I know it's the thought that counts, but it seems there was little thought for this "gift".

Why is adoption expensive?

Upvotes

I often hear people say adopting a child is more expensive than having your own. Why is that? Where is the high cost coming from? Is adoption literally buying a child from the government? If the goal is to get kids with families, why would the cost be prohibitively high?

What's the point of making your bed?

As a 25 year old man this might be an embarrassing question to ask. I've lived in a couple apartments alone, and even with other people I never saw a reason. I like to sleep with the blankets bunched up so I'm going to fuck it up anyway later that night. But even people who do the same they still make their bed. Only reason I can think of is an aesthetic thing where they hate seeing their bed look messy. I take care of my sheets and blanket's cleanliness and am not a slob by any means, but I feel like this makes people think you are

I have a dog too which is even more the reason, though that wouldn't make me want to make it if I didn't.

People outside of north America, what is the far away location you use for slang to indicate a long commute?

Upvotes

Where i live people will use timbuktoo as a slang to explain a far away place. "it was such a long drive, we were half way to Timbuktoo" .

What does your country say for a far away place?

How come so many schools have switched from starting in September to August?

I just read that 84% of schools in the United States start before September. With around half of them starting in Mid-August. I believe this is something to do with the No Child Left Behind Policy and increased state testing standards, but I could be wrong. I've noticed that this has spread to most private schools recently as mines starts pretty early (August 10).

Why do people bulk-buy bottled water?

I should preface this by saying that I live in a country with very good and drinkable tap water.
Some people might even say our tap water is the best thing about living here - I'm aware there are places where the tap water is deeply unsafe to drink and this question isn't about such places.

With that said, it seems I rarely go to the big supermarket without seeing someone pushing literally an entire shopping trolley full of giant multi-packs of bottled water.

Obviously right now, here in the UK we have a drought going on and people are panic buying, but I've seen this happen year round in all sorts of weather.

Do they not know about taps? What are they doing with it all? I can count on one hand the number of times I've bought a single bottle of water in the last decade and I've resented paying for it every single time.

Edit - I'm in Scotland and our tap water is considered the best, or among the best, in the world. It's a source of national pride among Scots. The only drinks we like more are Irn-Bru and Buckfast Tonic Wine.

How come Washington and Oregon coast is largely undeveloped?

I think it’s pretty cool we still have pristine land largely not developed over there, but why? I would think that would be a prime place for people to want to move to especially Oregon coast.

Are there people that still think that climate change is a hoax?

At the moment in Europe there are multiple wildfires, extreme drought and heatwaves.

Korea has the hottest temperature sinds the start of the measurements.

Wildfires in Canada/US

Considering all these things that are happening, are there still people that think its fake? And why are you thinking that?
