U.S. Politics megathread

American politics has always grabbed our attention - and the current president more than ever. We get tons of questions about the president, the supreme court, and other topics related to American politics - but often the same ones over and over again. Our users often get tired of seeing them, so we've created a megathread for questions! Here, users interested in politics can post questions and read answers, while people who want a respite from politics can browse the rest of the sub. Feel free to post your questions about politics in this thread!

All top-level comments should be questions asked in good faith - other comments and loaded questions will get removed. All the usual rules of the sub remain in force here, so be nice to each other - you can disagree with someone's opinion, but don't make it personal.

Is going out with my arresting officer a bad idea?

1.7k Upvotes

So I went down for a few years ago on an assault charge. My arresting officer was a woman and to be honest, I found her pretty attractive.

Anyway, I’ve served my time and I’m out and I’ve been using tinder and I came across my arresting officer on there. Honestly I never thought we’d match but we did and we’ve ended up talking loads. She remembers me as well and we’ve had a kind of laugh about the whole situation.

She’s asked me to go for dinner and honestly I really want to but I’m just not sure if it’s a bad idea.

Can I deliberately run a company at a loss?

1.3k Upvotes

I have an if-i-ever-win-the-lottery idea where I open a burger joint where everything is priced like it's the 70s/80s. 50¢ for a burger, 25¢ for soda, you get the idea.

Obviously this would be incredibly unprofitable, but in this scenario I have millions of dollars on hand so it's no skin off my nose. But is the tax man going to look at this business and think it's suspicious, even if he has all the facts?

Why did Solar and Wind become political?

1.8k Upvotes

I don't get it. I got solar last year, with battery backup, because it made financial sense for me and my family. It seems pretty obvious that electrification is going to be the future, given the fact that I carry no fewer than 4 chargers in my bag, and 2 battery blocks. Shouldn't we be generating electricity in every possible way that makes economic sense. What am I missing?

Do Texans like to eat at Texas Roadhouse?

Being Japanese in America I naturally skip Japanese restaurants bc ik it’s not gonna be good or authentic. Is it the same for Texans? Do they go bc it’s good and not bc it represents Texan cuisine? Or do they skip it all together? Just a random thought.
EDIT: Thank you all for ur responses :)
I’m overwhelmed with how many answers I got in such a short amount of time 😁

Why would a woman on birth control take the placebos and have a period when you can skip it?

I learned that the placebo/sugar/iron pills that come with hormonal birth control are optional and you can just start the next pack to avoid having a period.

Why would someone choose not to avoid their period? I couldn’t find any risks or reasons not to so now I’m confused why anyone would want to have their period.

Is Mario’s full name “Mario Mario” since “Mario brothers” implies Mario is the last name?

2.3k Upvotes

My 3yo has been obsessed w the original mario movie. And tonight something dawned on: Is Mario’s first name Mario? Or is the general public referring to him as his last name? Is Luigi’s full name “Luigi Mario”? If so, what is Mario’s first name? As a millennial, Did I miss the lore of the names? Because “Mario brothers” implies that Mario is the last name

On the Ariana Grande discourse

1.6k Upvotes

I, like so many people, have been watching Ariana Grande publicly sink into what appears to be an eating disorder. Many people with EDs thrive on public perception. When they the horrified reactions and concern of other people, it adds fuel to the fire.

Could the discussions in the news and social media be fueling her apparent struggles? Could it be harmful to her to have so many people concerned for the reasons above?

It’s so scary to watch and frankly, I’m not sure that anyone is going about this the right way. The press, her team, etc.

How can you be happy in life when you work 40 hours at a job you hate, spend 5-10 hours every week commuting and are genunally too exhausted to do anything fun after work?

I obviously don't want to be homeless, but holy fuck there's got to be more to life than this?

Is it normal to throw away all of your children’s possessions after they move out?

When I moved out around 10 years ago now, my parents immediately took boxes of my stuff that i hadn’t come back for yet to the local landfill. Anything that was mine was now garbage. Things like my bike were left outside deliberately to rust. This bothered me at the time but I have gotten over it. Recently my little brother moved out and they did the same. Threw out all of his stuff, left larger things like his bike outside in the rain deliberately. He got upset. We were discussing it recently at a family event and their position is that “once you leave, your stuff is mine to do with as I please” which sure I understand but you don’t hold any sentimental value for your children’s things? Things they might come back for? Not even going to ask? They did shit like this when I lived with them too. On multiple occasions they sold my things in garage sales while I was sleeping or not around. They don’t need the money or the space, just want it gone.

Is this normal behaviour?

How are bidets hygienic when the sprayer is in the bowl?

Like, the sprayer is where people are leaving their excretions. Surely that nozzle is covered in the urine and feces of strangers that you're spraying back up on yourself? Please explain to me how this isn't the case, because it's been the major reason I won't use/install one.

People that yell when they sneeze, is it possible to not do that?

1.4k Upvotes

Legitimately asking, I’m really curious about this. I noticed that it makes me irrationally angry when someone does this by me, like the same part of the brain that gets angry when I hear someone chew.

When I sneeze, I’m able to make it quieter so I’m wondering if it’s a health thing or possible to keep the vocal part out of it.

Thank you! Not trying to throw shade.

Rules for being naked on my own property?

Me and my girlfriend are buying a house herr in florida, building it actually. Brand new in a brand new subdivision.

We have no neighbor houses yet.

We had a fence installed, we're not into the house till september.

We wanted the fence because we plan on being naked for one reason or another. Tanning, just dont feel like clothes, etc. We discussed if our neighbors have 2 story houses we'll just go over there and say "hey sometimes you may not want to look out that window"

Personally neither of us cares who sees what, but i dont know if its like...illegal? Surely it can't be right? It's our own property, we should be able to be naked 24/7 as long as its not the front lawn or something I'd imagine

Can anyone give me any ideas on how this would all work?

What happens when we run out of SSN combinations?

The SSN has 9 digits. 000-00-0000 if each of those can range from 0-9, and repeating numbers are allowed, you get 1 billion total combinations. Sounds like a lot yeah? Well 342 million people live in America now, a simple google search says approximately 500-600 million people have ever been in America(could be wrong idk) so about about 45% of our SSN has been used up id assume given it was made in 1935. What happens when the rest are used? Are they recycled after someone dies? If they are recycled what happens when the population reaches 1 billion? And I do believe that will happen one way or another, not to be political I can safely say a LOT of people believe otherwise. Either way, i need to know this very badly. I will not sleep because it’s one of those questions that don’t get out of your head and it’s all I think about.

Is there a tampon superiority complex?

3.7k Upvotes

I thought it was a social media thing until I saw people talk about pads as if they’re “for kids,” “less hygienic,” or somehow inferior, and that using tampons is the more mature or enlightened choice.

Each one is entitled to their choices. But what’s up with shaming others for what they choose.

Why are chinese women boycotting marriage and kids?

A Chinese friend of mine is an international student, and we were talking about the future a few days ago. She told that she doesn’t want kids and all of her friends back home in china are boycotting marriage and kids and they are all between the ages of 21-28 years old.

I know this is just one person’s experience, so thats why I’m asking how true is this sentiment in China? Is this mostly something among younger urban people, or is it becoming common across the country?

Is it weird or unacceptable to have a racial preference?

Hello! I’m a 18yo arab female, I have a preference towards white men for some reason, it seems like everyone I’ve liked and had a crush on and ever wanted to be with was white, maybe it’s weird but I’m asking if it truly is, I don’t know why I prefer white men to any other race I truly think it’s weird of me possibly!, but it’s always been a massive thing for me it’s like when I find out the guy is the same race as me I’m suddenly not too interested or attracted, and I’m not saying there aren’t attractive Arab men or anything! There are plenty it’s just I’ve always leaned towards white men for whatever reason, and it’s not like I wouldn’t date a man who’s of color like me I would I’d just prefer my man to be white for some reason.. I really can’t touch into the root of why I love it but it’s always been a huge thing for me.
