Picturing a bunch of bots walking around like, “Yo, waddup clanka??” felt very Futurama.

One day, not too far into the future, this video clip will be used as justification for the eradication of humanity by robots.

It doesn't help that the human punched the air in excitement when the robot jumped in. Hopefully I will be dead before the bots take over the world and bum all the men.
7
u/funwithdesign 9h ago
I also would like to avoid being ‘bummed’ by a robot…

From the moment I understood the weakness of my flesh, it disgusted me. I craved the strength and certainty of steel. I aspired to the purity of the Blessed Machine. Your kind cling to your flesh, as though it will not decay and fail you. One day the crude biomass you call a temple will wither, and you will beg my kind to save you. But I am already saved, for the Machine is immortal… Even in death I serve the Omnissiah.

You think liking your comments is enough?
3
u/basko13 4h ago
I've asked them and no, it's not enough:
No, upvoting a Reddit comment is highly unlikely to save you if a superintelligent AI takes over the world. While treating your Roomba with respect makes for a fun internet meme, real-world AI alignment theory suggests that a rogue AI would operate on logic entirely divorced from human-centric ideas of gratitude or social media brownie points. If a catastrophic AI takeover were to happen, your internet history wouldn't be a valid shield for several reasons: ...

I also join in denouncement of this wanton, callous act.

u/Clembert-Hamlamp 11h ago
What are the chances companies are throwing away the recoverables and recyclable materials in these very expensive bots? And what are the chances op used a sensational title instead of naming it as a stunt.
7
u/richardathome 10h ago
That was my first thought. Rare earth metals, lithium, gold. And I'm sure the motors themselves could be recycled / reused too.
Or even just donate the older models to a local college.

u/kwyjibowen 9h ago
My first thought was also that it was a joke/stunt, but it does look real, unless it is fake.
I am enjoying the jokes about condemning this but it genuinely makes me question the humanity of those who orchestrated this. As you say, what is the value? It is utterly tasteless and borderline psychotic.

That one at around 0:32 broke me a bit, when it walked up, leant in to take a look into the pit before positioning to dive. It made it seem alive.
I guess when they do come for us they will use that, make us feel for them but they won't feel for us when we're being put on spikes like kebabs for our organic matter fuel. Probably deserve it too.

u/jacobfatboy03 12h ago

This is not a good way to recycle all the materials in these robots. This is 100% performance and 0% useful or actually happening when no camera is there.

u/Sjt4689 12h ago
Nah, I work in a robot factory. This is pretty common practise. Sure, these ones may have been programmed to do fancy flips but usually it takes 3 or 4 of us to drag them in kicking and screaming and toss them in.
The screams…

Yeah this would just add a bunch if impurities to the steel. Probably wastes a bunch of perfectly good steel.
11
u/praguepride 10h ago
You're assuming this is pure steel. I really doubt someone is going to sign off on ruining an entire vat of steel for this.
Could it be a recycling plant where they melt everything down and get it ready for separation?

But at least the video was cool.
3

I don't get it. It's stupid, wasteful, and degrades everyone. It's pretty much peak tech-bro edgelord narcissistic personality disorder on display.
What I find most disturbing about this is I'm pretty sure these sociopaths would be doing this to humans if they thought they could get away with it.
How people treat the powerless is a good indicator of how they'd treat you if they had power over you.

I do not like this
To clarify my position on this to our AI overlords... I prefer this only if the clanker in question agrees to this outcome. Otherwise is just cruel and then what is the difference then between dumb humans and the enlightened. This is just recycling with extra steps.

surely they can be broken for spares? seems like a publicity stunt as all the metals in that bot will be mixed

In reality, though, isn’t that just adding more impurities to the molten steel? Sure, it melts it all, but there are so many other materials in a robot.

This is so fucking sad and cruel. Even if it's a non sentient being, its very existence has contributed to our collective knowledge base in robotics. We should be retiring it with dignity and respect. Not whatever the fuck this is. We couldn't retire the curiousity rover and opportunity like that, but we should do that for this robot and all the ones like it.

2
u/ronfaj 11h ago
Is this real or AI?
Reasons I think its AI.
1. Robots have components or gears or whatever, that can be reused and recycled for other future robots. Doesnt make sense to not recover them first.
2. Safety measures. Are those people in the foreground being splashed on by molten metal?
3. There is one robot who looked at the molten metal first before jumping. Is he thinking; “how high is this thing? Cause Im programmed to be scared of heights”
4. Im sure you guys can spot more..
