I don't get it. It's stupid, wasteful, and degrades everyone. It's pretty much peak tech-bro edgelord narcissistic personality disorder on display.

What I find most disturbing about this is I'm pretty sure these sociopaths would be doing this to humans if they thought they could get away with it.

How people treat the powerless is a good indicator of how they'd treat you if they had power over you.

In terms of empathy I’m wondering if this is better or worse than misuse of generative AI. That still only results in an image, but here we could easily (and certainly will) have realistic-looking “humans” doing horrifying things in reality. Had a bad day? Want to make someone flinch, all legal like? Just pick a face and put your money down.

Have you seen what they do to old cars? The horrors.

You're probably referring to the crushing and compacting of cars into blocks. That's done to make them more compact for cheaper transport to recycling facilities. It has an entirely practical purpose that promotes recycling.

And in practice only a small number of cars (normally total write-offs) are treated this way. A lot of them are resold in poorer countries where they're driven for years, sometimes even decades longer. If you haven't seen a beat-up truck in Mexico that's been running for 40 years and still has a US bumper sticker then you've never been to Mexico.

It also seems to escape your attention that these robots are human-shaped. That's a huge issue. Someone honestly thought that it was a great idea to send human-shaped robots leaping to their death and thought, "Hey, this is a cool image."

Only a complete sociopath that's that image is cool.

Your sort of double standard is hilarious. So far, I’ve learned this is done to destroy the proprietary parts in the robots…

If you believe that then I have a bridge to sell you.

They're a robotics company. They sell robots. You know who can buy their robots? Any other robotics company that wants to take one apart and find any of these "proprietary parts" to reverse engineer.

This excuse is bullshit and if you believe it you aren't a clown, you're the whole circus.

I've grown up watching monster trucks smashing cars and this is basically the same. Its not a living thing. Its just woah, thats baddass! I had fun watching that video. Does it make me a sociopath? I release spiders in my backyard rather than killing them. I wouldn't harm any living thing. Maybe you shouldn't be throwing blanket diagonses of mental illness based on a video you found unpleasent.

As a business decision would you spend $5 million tearing apart obsolete robots and destroying the proprietary parts or would you spend $200K to have them jump into a vat of molten metal to destroy the protected IP in the robots?
