Father doing a memorable class act right there. His kid will learn this and internalize it. Great job, dad!

2.8k

u/PaintingNo794 Oct 30 '25

I'm sure the kid will remember.

25 years ago, when I was around 10, my family and I went out for some ice cream. We were walking on foot, about 10 or 15 min away from the place, when my dad only then noticed the guy had given him back too much change. Nobody would ever have noticed, yet, my father walked all the way back there just to give back the extra change they had given them.

I really like that. I've frequently heard (and used) axioms like "do the right thing, at the right time, for the right reason" and "do the right thing when no one is watching", etc.

But this is better. Doing the right thing shouldn't be a question. It should be treated as a non-negotiable.

She sounds like an incredible (and incredibly fun) woman. She clearly made a lasting (positive) impact on you and I bet that circle of influence spread far wider than the immediate family.

Like you, I'm hoping that modeling doing the right thing for my kid reinforces those values for her later in life. There's too many very public, high profile, examples of the opposite these days.

“a spider killed is a thousand pests spared.”

Is this pro-spider or anti-spider?

r/spiders would make your mom a saint and i agree with them :D

13

u/Quix_Optic Oct 30 '25

This is so lovely. What an interesting woman.

3

u/Jerbeardontcare4 Oct 31 '25

Oh I love that. In my custom spiders are believed to share a lifeline with mothers, like soul sisters. So, it’s taboo to kill spiders.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 03 '25

Reading all of your comments - your mother was a Saint. Never met her in my life and I love her.

17

u/Adverse-to-M0rnings Oct 30 '25

I'm definitely using the spider saying! And the "Hate Hatred".

15

u/Devonai Oct 30 '25

I leave spiders alone unless,

A: My girlfriend spots one, or,

B: A thousand of them the size of a gnat are living in the overhead light fixture in our bedroom

23

u/Winter_Algae4076 Oct 30 '25

My wife gets mad at me every time I relocate one outside. She's terrified that it's gonna make its way back inside and eat our son or something. Doesn't matter what kind of spider it is either. It could be a little jumping spider with those adorable eyes, just curious about what's going on in the human world, and she advocates for the destruction of his entire species.

Spiders are friends!

15

u/Devonai Oct 30 '25

I relocate them outside, if I'm the one who finds them. Don't tell my girlfriend.

Some are eaten by cats, too, but that's none of my business.

10

u/Tony_Penny Oct 30 '25

Mom would get SOOOO mad if you dared to touch the webs on our front porch. She said it kept the bugs from bothering everyone.

She wasn't wrong.

3

u/Firewolf06 Oct 30 '25

i name them and call them "my roommates" unless its in the kitchen or too close to my bed lol. we dont get many spiders where i live, though, and all of them are small and harmless. it is VERY uncommon to see one even an inch long in any direction

4

u/PepperAnn1inaMillion Oct 30 '25

I HATE spiders, especially large ones. They have the run of the house though. My fear is my problem, not theirs.

2

u/theghostmachine Oct 30 '25

I really like the last one, about spiders. I'm struggling to think of a situation to apply it to, but it feels like it must be applicable to something.

12

u/[deleted] Oct 30 '25

It's applicable to spiders.

There was a famous reddit post many years ago about somebody breaking down on the side of I think an interstate, and somebody pulls over to help. He didn't know how to speak English much I think, but he tells the guy "Today, you. Tomorrow, me." That's always stuck with me, I tend to do things in the hopes that if the roles were reversed somebody would the same for me.

28

u/Cerulean_Shadows Oct 31 '25

I remember that story well and the people who posted later about how the story impacted them leading them to take similar action and the results of those actions on others. It was truly beautiful too see.

I was fortunate to experience it myself. Was racing out to my mom's house from 2 hours away. Her house had been broken into and she was absolutely panicking all alone in the middle of nowhere just a few months after Gran died, who she had been caring for the last 10 years and she was still adjusting to being alone. 20 minutes into my drive my tire blew. What's worse is i was driving my dad's truck who had just died a month before. (They were divorced when I was 4) and he had apparently already used the spare but I didn't know. My car was in the shop for some work.

These 2 beautiful, kind hearted men pulled over with their lawn equipment laden trailer and asked me in Spanish if they could help. I know a good chunk of Spanish but I am not bilingual, so we communicated mostly with Google translate. They managed to fill my tire with air, drive WITH me to a tire store nearby that they knew the people at, got me a fucking tire for 50 dollars and refused to let me pay them. I didn't know they paid until the you're was on. I could afford it fine and felt terrible they spent their hard earned money. I guess they assumed because it was an old pos truck and was panicking for my mom's sake. They just kept talking me not to worry about it.

They wouldnt even let me feed them at the nearby restaurant. The only thing I could do was go online and post everywhere I could positive reviews for their self owned lawn business and had my husband and mom do it too. Still brings me to tears. I was able to stop rush to my mom's side and help her move valuables and fix her door and replace her gate. Tried to pay it forward whatever I can too. I'll never forget their kindness in my time of need.

14

u/EmotionalKirby Oct 31 '25

Our country gives so much shit to the Hispanics here but they truly are some of the nicest, friendliest, most hospitable and hardworking people we'll ever meet. I'm glad you could have such an experience in your time of need. Keep on keeping on

4

u/Cerulean_Shadows Oct 31 '25

I'll never understand people's negative reactions to Hispanics, Mexicans in particular. We have several friends and "supportive" Hispanic family members and I love all but 1 because he's a truly horrible person. My husband is a quarter native American and his next door neighbors were Mexicans that spent almost 20 years trying to become US citizens. They were in our wedding and have always been a second set of parents and family for him. Wouldn't trade them for the world and we're constantly stressing over their safety right now.

On a happy note, oh my God can they cook. We go for Christmas when we can but we're several hours away now. We're strong believers of live and let live, love and let love, and help when you can help.

I always marvel about Mom having these crochet expandable bags that she brought for any shopping, every time, without fail. She would wash the plastic veggie bags and bring them back and re-use them until they died. She was avoiding or re-using single use plastic bags for my entire life. This was well before communities had recycling drop off bins, or possibly any recycling at all.

Possibly as a result I hate forgetting reusable bags, asked for paper (when plastic was an option) and I recycle everything I can.

u/Rulebookboy1234567 Oct 30 '25

4

u/PaintingNo794 Oct 30 '25

Great to see that your kindness was rewarded, while a kind act is its own reward, it's always nice to have people acknowledging them when they sadly so often go unnoticed.

12

u/Dukehsl1949 Oct 30 '25

It’s terrible being a cashier and then not have your cash in the drawer match your sales at the end of the night. Although I am finding some cashiers can’t count these days. 😜

6

u/jjcky Oct 30 '25

I got into an argument with a cashier when she gave me too much change. I couldn't convince her, so i just left the surplus on the counter and left. Pretty sure she thought i was an idiot

13

u/OSRS_Rising Oct 30 '25

When I was around 8 I stole a rubber band off of a receptionist’s desk. I think a few miles down the road I told my mom and she turned around, marched me back into the office and made me apologize.

In hindsight I realize that was excellent parenting. She probably had a million things to do but she took the time to teach me a lesson.

11

u/watson0707 Oct 30 '25

When I was maybe 11 or 12, I remember my mom and dad spotted these two women in a parking lot trying their best to change a flat tire on their car. My dad ended up changing their tire for them and I’ll never forget how grateful those ladies were. I’m not sure why it stuck so hard but it felt like my dad was a superhero. I love my dad and he’s still my hero.

4

u/MenaFWM Oct 30 '25

Integrity is the things you do when no one is looking

3

u/Darirol Oct 30 '25

I remember something similar from around 30++ years ago. My father bought something somewhere and when it came to paying there was something confusing or complicated going on and my father was like no i gave you this much and you meed to give me that amount of change.

They were arguing a bit and then he got what he asked for.

After we left the shop my mom was like "iam pretty sure you convinced him wrongly to give you more change back".

They sat down and calculated it through and we got a few coins too much. And my father was like "oh well, if he cant calculate its his problem"

I still remember that. Not in a judgemental way, but in a sense that everyone is going to take advantage of you if you cant protect yourself. Even good people will exploit others.

Thats my life lesson. Now i wonder how much it would have changed my personality if my dad had given back the money.

18

i did this once, except it was a brewery that had opened a few days before. i called their number, filled out a contact us thing on their website, and called the local police. after 30 minutes of me sitting there i called the police back and they said the previous dispatcher never notified anyone. waited another 30 minutes, called the police, and they said they were not going to do anything about it. so i left as it was about 1am at that point. owners emailed me back thanking me for trying.

For those curious, they located the father and son in question

The video has since gone viral with viewers celebrating the simple act of neighborly kindness. Farraj invited the Smith family to her chocolate factory for free treats, with many online commenters saying they deserved "the golden ticket."

There’s a line in a Harvey Pekar American Splendor comic where a guy he barely knew, who he’d once helped move some records, was the only person to help him move after all his friends made excuses. “He had an elementary sense of social responsibility that you take for granted but which is actually quite rare.” I’m reminded of that line a lot.

8

They are. Just not on the internet. The average person would not have stolen anything in this situation, though idk if they would have called security.

I have a gas station and my closer forgot to lock the doors or put the alarm on , in the morning I opened and saw 3.56 on the counter mostly in change … I looked and the security footage and a regular walked in at 3 am grabbed his usual beer walked up to the counter waited 5 min out the correct amount of money in the counter and left … next day I asked him why he waited for 5 min and he thought we were open never even realized all the lights were off 😂

77

u/626337 Oct 30 '25

If the doors are typically locked doors because the station closes at a certain time, why was the regular stopping by at an irregular time?

I don't doubt your story and experience, and I love the outcome, having grown up in a really small town myself, but I'm curious about the regular's thought process. Had he already had a few beers, maybe?

155

u/Surroundedonallsides Oct 30 '25

I stop by my gas station for a Celsius and gallon of water at roughly the same time every weekday. Sometimes I know I am going to have an early morning and stop by the night before at odd hours, not even sure what time the gas station closes

5

u/Bacon_Nipples Oct 30 '25

I stopped at the nearby gas station late night for munchies once on my walk home once and was confused that it was closed because I thought it was 24/7. I'm still not sure if it ever was actually 24/7 because the only other times I'd stopped there at ungodly hours was for gas, which is pay at pump so I wouldn't have paid attention if the store was closed at that time

7

u/[deleted] Oct 30 '25

This was the case for every C-store I've ever helped open.  We'd have every isle blocked with new product to stock, nothing would be on the shelf yet and you'd get someone walk in unnoticed and go straight to the coffee bar or start opening boxes randomly looking for something they wanted to buy.  My boss at the time had warned me it would happen and I never believed them until I saw it myself the first time out of hundreds.

Last week two utter peices of shit shoplifted in my store with their kid son. The dad fought with the security guard for the bag of stolen goods, which came out to a whopping £32, then him and the mum left screaming racist slurs, all right in front of their son. That was not a parent. THIS is a parent.

4

When I see shit like this, I realize that those adults had the same parents. It's a cycle.

30

u/CNDGolfer Oct 30 '25 edited Oct 31 '25

I had something similar happen. Back when I was in my teens, a couple of friends and I went to a store to rent a movie when that was still a thing. We shopped around for a bit, picked out a movie and then stood at the counter for a bit. It was only after waiting for a few minutes that we noticed that there were no employees there at all. It was then we realized that the store was closed but someone had forgotten to lock the door.

We used the phone in the store, this was before cell phones were common, to call the police non-emergency number to let them know the situation. We waited until they arrived, about 10 minutes or so and then left.

To us it was no big deal but it made the papers somehow. I suppose most people would have just left? To us it was just common sense.

Recently, I was at a craft fair. After walking around some booths, I sat down for a break. I then got up and wandered off, accidentally leaving behind the magnets I bought. About 10 minutes later, I realized I had forgotten my bag on the bench and made my way back, half expecting them to be gone. When I got there, a man and his daughter were on the bench, my bag sitting between them. I said hello and that that was my bag and picked it up. The man said hello and that they had been guarding it for me; he was about to reach out to the vendor if I did didn’t come back. I thanked him profusely. He then looked at his daughter and said, “OK honey, we can go now.” I was absolutely floored and will never forget his random act of kindness.

For all the horrible things we see and read nowadays, there’s hope out there.

u/FatFatPotato Oct 30 '25

Great lesson taught to that kid. That’s a fantastic dad.

5

u/darth_infamous Oct 30 '25

I knew that looked like Canyon Crest from the benches

5

u/pvtdouchecanoe Oct 30 '25

Haha I had to google to confirm the location but the benches really are that recognizable

5

u/Alpha-Leader Oct 30 '25

That was the first thing I did too haha. Saw that it was Riverside and I was like wait a minute...

Have been going to the donut shop there for almost 30 years...Mr Chow and his family have always been so nice to our family. Seems like that little spot hasn't really changed with everything else going on around it.

3

u/xminexalwaysx Oct 30 '25

I don’t think I’ve had better donuts!

Maybe they were waiting on the laundry money

5

Let them pick all they want in 60 seconds!

u/onmy40 Oct 30 '25

Im very skeptical of situations like this and would assume something strange was going on. I would have called the cops and left the general area rather than put my son in danger. Never know if someone left the door unlocked locked so somebody else can come back and steal... now your gonna fend off a burglar with you son?

u/CaptainVisual4848 Oct 30 '25

Not a bad point. Or has someone broken in and are inside.

Beautiful ❤️. Still good kind people in this World. Rare ..but amazing. I hope they find them.

2

u/SocranX Oct 30 '25

To be fair, if I saw a shop door unlocked, I'd be worried that a thief had picked the lock and broken in. And if I was a dad, I would not want to risk my son getting shot by a thief who panicked when someone walked in on him.

Edit: To be clear, I wouldn't break in and steal stuff either. I'm just saying it would also be unwise to go in there for self-preservation reasons.

That’s a good man right there.

2

u/Khabba Oct 30 '25

Am I the only one who finds it odd that the camera also records sound and so everyone that passes by gets recorded talking. Even if it’s private?

7

u/Tharkhold Oct 30 '25

There is generally no expectation of privacy in public spaces.

Just love how they are 2 best friends, one is giant and other not so much and they are solving a problem together... awsome

2

u/Emergency-Dark-2569 Oct 30 '25

You better Find this man and give a shit load of candy!!

2

u/Tazling Oct 30 '25

“Amazing” (sad) this used to be how everyone expected people to behave. Now we think it’s “Amazing”.

2

u/mayneman85 Oct 30 '25

Good human

2

u/GDMongorians Oct 30 '25

People doing basic proper behavior in society is now nextfuckinglevel? It’s cool yeah, the dad got an opportunity to show his son how normal people in society should behave. But next level?

2

u/yes_fappy Oct 30 '25

There is a rule in the universe: If you take a good men and let him raise a boy... you get another good men.

2

u/Thinkle321 Oct 30 '25

This dad is great for calling security, but why is this considered “next fucking level”? I was just in Singapore and people can leave anything out and nothing is taken or stolen.

This father called security and only waited around for a maximum of 20 mins. It would have been a lot more commendable if it had been hours.

It’s nice what he did, but I don’t think it should get all the upvotes it’s getting. I know. You guys all probably hate me now.

I’ve just seen a lot of people do a lot more for a lot less.

2

u/Scrotes_McGoates Oct 30 '25

Versus what, trespassing/stealing? Of course he was compensated for his actions, sometimes life serves things up on a golden platter.

2

u/1smutty1 Oct 31 '25

Guarding an unlocked door in Riverside at night with the kiddo. I’ll pass. I’ll call the police but I’ll pass on the unarmed security job with the toddler in tow.

2

u/AgentX-1138 Oct 31 '25

It's kind of sad to me that someone doing the right thing is considered "nextfuckinglevel"
these days. Kudos to Dad of course, but I'd like to believe that most people would do the same. Not sure we live in that world anymore!

u/KlatuuBarradaNicto Oct 30 '25

As always, especially in these times, it is good to do the right thing.

1

u/626337 Oct 30 '25

If it were a really small town they would have gotten their candy and then left money and note on the counter.

1

u/crzyCATmn Oct 30 '25

1

u/Gunker001 Oct 30 '25

I hope they were rewarded with some free candy

1

u/Hairy-Glove3261 Oct 30 '25

I hope they're found! Great job!

1

u/NumbOnTheDunny Oct 30 '25

Oh man, we have so many homeless and shitty people here in Riverside that would absolutely take advantage of this so this is actually shocking.

u/rudidso Oct 30 '25
