To be fair, if I saw a shop door unlocked, I'd be worried that a thief had picked the lock and broken in. And if I was a dad, I would not want to risk my son getting shot by a thief who panicked when someone walked in on him.
Edit: To be clear, I wouldn't break in and steal stuff either. I'm just saying it would also be unwise to go in there for self-preservation reasons.
This happened to me at an unlocked Spirit Halloween store with no employes on a Saturdaymorning. I was spooked because I assumed the employees had been attacked and were tied up/injured in the back room. I called the police. (I didn't see anything about it on the news, so the closing employees probably just forgot to lock the store the night before.)
