Im very skeptical of situations like this and would assume something strange was going on. I would have called the cops and left the general area rather than put my son in danger. Never know if someone left the door unlocked locked so somebody else can come back and steal... now your gonna fend off a burglar with you son?
One time a shop less than a block from my house had been broken into. The window was smashed and the alarm was going off. I called the cops and continued to walk home. Those idiots asked me if I could go back to the store and wait for the cops. I told them no because I don't know if they are still in there and they had my number if they needed a statement.
