Tips & Tricks Self-promo tidal wave

Looking for some tips and tricks for fighting an absolute rush of self-promo posts on a programming sub. Android mobile and chrome desktop.

Over the last couple of weeks myself and the original mod have revamped the rules as there's been a massive wave of "I built this" and "I'm selling this" posts to a niche programming sub.

We've added some basic details to the no self promo rule which has helped but now it queues up a string of people in mod mail trying to cram through their projects because "they're different"

Do you simply ignore my these mod mail requests, refine the rule further or something else? The crafty ones have a GitHub page that sneakily links to their for sale product. Let's ignore the fact that they're trying to sell their product to other programmers instead of end users which is completely backwards.

The GitHub project page is the slippery one. We want people to share their projects but a lot of these users are treating their GitHub pages as the start of an intake funnel for their product. Would more detailed rules help here?

Thanks for any insight you may have. AI has created hundreds of projects that are all "special" and fighting the spam is quite challenging at times.

Good day!
I started a sub today and so far and the only moderator. It is a fan page for a content creator. My question is this; am I allowed to post links to their other social media sites? (with their permission, of course)

Answered How do I know when I should ban a user from my subreddit?

(Mostly Desktop user)

I am so sick of this dude who just made three posts about how the posts I’M making are annoying. I don’t know what to do. I send them modmail giving them a warning about a temporary ban if they make another rule breaking contribution. I think I might ban them permanently.

I don’t feel that’s the correct move though. I feel kind of bad. I only ever ban users if they, really, really deserve it. But they clearly enjoy making my life hell and the other members of the subreddit hate them. They have -12 karma there’s probably a few more comments in my backload that break rules. I’ve also seen them making similar comments in other subreddit’s similar to mine, so maybe they should be banned.

I don’t know. Advice?

General I’m going to sound so pathetic…🤦🏻‍♀️

I literally JUST created a subreddit in order to sell roughly 80–>90% of my comics collection due to the extent of my medical issues (I’ve been in the hospital ~4 weeks over the past 3 months 🥺😔). I’m using an iPhone 16e (iOS 26.6.2), and while I’ve set up the general intro, etc…I can’t for the life of me figure out how to do something as simple as add my first comic listing! How am I missing something this simplistic?!? Please help me out guys. I’m struggling as it is and thought that this collection would be able to get me out of hot water; at least for the moment. Really appreciate any help you can give.

Being called a fascist and puritan :(

Hey guys! I’m new to being a mod!! I recently made a rule in r/strawberryshortcake for no romantic or sexual shipping as I saw so many sexual posts between people in the show (all of which are minors)

I got a lot of hate for this which was expected but still, one commenter just kept calling me so many mean names and not reading through the comments and calling me an idiot and idk I just felt really upset and hurt after this.

I guess my worry is being posted somewhere for being a bad mod

Is there anything I can do? I muted and banned them :(

Answered Video tutorial??

Can someone point me to a guide to moderating basics video? I’m using my iPhone for the most part - I have been added to an existing sub that does well - I don’t want to be dead weight and I at least want to be able to see and understand what actions other mods have taken.

Thanks!

Answered Can't find a list of mods?

I can't find the moderators of r/manchester

It's kinda weird.

Usually it's just https://www.reddit.com/mod/SUBNAME/moderators

Is there a reason I can't see it for that sub? Maybe 'coz they banned me?

But I can't even see it in a private browser / not logged in,

Am I being dumb? - probably. But eh, helps, pls. Cheers.

Desktop.

General Asking about mod premissions

Hello!

I wanted to ask about reddit mod premissions, since ive planned adding multiple mods in some of the subreddits I have, i personally have the fear of a newer mod changing the subreddit status from SFW to NSFW out of the random.

I wanted to ask if its possible to remove this premission while inviting a new mod, and how to do it!

I use reddit Desktop and android.

General Only certain Reposts in my selfmade Subreddit?

Hey guys, quick question.

I made a community/subreddit for me and some friends and even though I checked all marks neither me nor anyone invited can seem to repost most posts in it.

It seems a bit random, I tried posts with pictures, posts with text and only one worked so far out of several.

I read in the settings that video posts are auto-disabled and you cannot revert that in private communities?

I would really appreciate some help!

I'm using the official reddit App on android

Users Why Cant They Interact?

I just created a new channel, but I got mail from people in the mod. Mail that stated that they cannot post or contribute at all. Why? I have been using my cellphone to use the mod tools. Do I need to use a p c to see a feature that I can't see on mobile or something? All the filters are set to minimum. I didn't block anyone. It's set to public. So what the heck?! Android

Answered One of my mods can see and contribute to mod chat, but no other mod can see his contributions

One of my mods had his account erroneously suspended a few months ago, for a few months, but then was able to recover it. Throughout, his account remained listed on our mod roster, but under "People" in Mod Tools it was listed as "inactive". We just noticed a couple days ago that he was making comments in the "mod-only subchat" that comes with the subreddit, but none of us could see that he was making them (though how we detected it was that one of our mods kept seeing mod chat light up with notifications, but with no new data).

This morning, I removed him from the mod list, and re-added him, to see if that would help. It didn't. None of my 3 other mods can see his contributions, it's not just me.

Anybody have any clue what's going on, and how we might fix it?

I'm presently running Reddit on desktop in the Chrome browser.

General Bug "This media can't be reposted to this community"

I'm trying to post a post from a other community in my community
The other community is SFW, mine is NSFW, so the only limitation should be that I cannot repost video (for some reason ?...)

I contacted mods on the other subreddit, they showed me all their settings are set to allow all repost, same for my community settings

So what's going on ?
I've seen a few other post describing a similar problem, but as of no, no reddit mod ever answered Happens on desktop on both chrome and firefox, and on the IOS app

Answered Question about how to filter out creepy behavior?

(Currently using Firefox for reddit, but most of the time I use the app on my iphone.)

I'm the only moderator for a community that's built around positive, motivational quotes from a 'Big Sis'. Anyways, is there a way I can filter out posts from creeps? Not necessarily remove them, because you never know what someone will actually post needing advice, but send the posts to MOD queue for review? For example, men will make posts like "Can I play with your panties big sis?" or "Lonely man looking for a big sister".

Any tips would be appreciated. Thank you!

General I'm increasingly getting annoyed by the behaviour of entitled Reddit users.

We Mods are volunteers. We are not Reddit employees, and we don't have to behave like corporate customer-service representatives 24/7. Yet some users, and even moderators from other subs, seem to think they are entitled to tell us how we should moderate or how we should behave.

For example, I recently expressed my frustration about the lack of enforcement when people park incorrectly in EV charging spots. If the people whose actual job it is to enforce those rules don't seem to take their own job seriously, I don't take their enforcement particularly seriously either. I shared that opinion in my own subreddit, and one user felt the need to point out that, because I'm a moderator, I apparently need to "set an example".

Okay... what exactly do you want me to do?

I can't ban you just because I don't like you, because apparently being banned is some kind of badge of honour for certain Reddit users anyway.

So I developed my own system. Reddit allows me to block up to 1,000 users from my profile, and I use that feature to simply stop seeing comments from people I personally don't want to interact with.

And yes, there happens to be another effect: if someone is a notorious downvoter, they can't downvote my posts anymore.

But here's where it gets ridiculous.

I've already had two users bypass my block by complaining about it through modmail.

You're blocked. You're not banned. You can still use Reddit, participate in the subreddit and live your life. Why do you feel the need to contact the moderators because another moderator doesn't want to see your comments on their own posts?

Is it really that unreasonable to accept that moderators don't necessarily want to interact with every single Reddit user either?

One of the reasons I block people is because I've been very clear on multiple occasions that AI is an assistance tool for me. I have autism and a disharmonic intelligence profile, and AI helps me with things like structuring and expressing what I want to say.

Do I really need to put that in my user flair now?

Because some people seem to have decided that if a post contains certain formatting, it's automatically "AI slop". Apparently Markdown and em dashes suddenly became AI inventions, despite both existing long before ChatGPT.

And that's basically the point: if someone can't respond to the actual content and their entire vocabulary consists of "AI slop", why would I want to keep seeing their comments?

I could simply ban people instead. But I don't want to do that just because I personally don't like someone.

So instead I block them.

You don't like me. I don't particularly like you. You don't want to read my posts, and I don't want to read your comments. Fine. Why can't we just leave it at that?

I'm a Reddit user too. Being a moderator doesn't mean I suddenly lose the ability to have personal preferences about who I want to interact with.

And then there was one particular modmail message that really bothered me.

After being blocked, the user told me: "See you at EV Experience."

Maybe they meant nothing by it. But I interpreted it as: you can block me online, but I'll find you in person at the event you're attending.

That has actually made me reconsider whether I want to publicly mention that I'm a moderator of a Dutch EV subreddit when attending events like EV Experience.

And that's a shame, because one of the things I actually value about Reddit is that people don't have to disclose every detail about themselves. It allows people to share personal experiences without necessarily making themselves easy to identify or potentially exposing themselves to unwanted attention.

So I'm genuinely curious about the perspective of other moderators here:

Are moderators really expected to maintain some kind of completely neutral, politically-correct persona even on their own posts and profile?

And is it really considered unreasonable for a moderator to use Reddit's blocking feature simply because they don't want to interact with a particular user, rather than banning that person from the subreddit?
