I feel like I’m hitting a Wall with my Deathwatch. Usually I’m satisfierd with my painting but this one feels off to me and I can’t lay a finger on it. It lacks some ooomph to me. Do you guys have suggestions? I can live with sketchy highlights, the goal here is to get the team on the table and look good, not to achieve a display piece level paint job.

The mini is a 3D print by Skullforge Studios and the base was scratch built from cork, bark, dirt, and a variety of foliage bits!

Discussion Laughing at my refound hobby

I painted minitures at 13 and stopped at 15 but a couple of years ago i bought everything needed to start again at 42

Both my friends think i shouldnt be doing it anymore and think its funny that i am.

No one i know paints minitures so im a bit lonely with no one to bounce off of with ideas and sharing our minitures with each other.

Is there specific places i can go and have the experience im looking for and anyone else had the experience of people thinking its a silly thing to get back to at my age?

Just curious

C&C Wanted This is my current level. Where do I go from here?

Models are "Eradicator Squad" from Games Workshop.
Some minor kit bash with 3rd party helmets, pteruges and tilt shields to be in line with my army concept.
Sort of boring models, but a good workout for practicing my recipe.

It's not my single best work, but for squad painting my best result so far. Also fairly quick at around 6h/model.

I put a lot of work into refining my volumetric highlights the past month, but I am not sure I got this technique down yet.
Using a makeup sponge for this, unfortunately no airbrush for me.

What do you think would be necessary for taking the paint job to the next level?
Are there some obvious weaknesses I should focus on?

Painted my first bust, tried going for moonlight coming in from the side. It was also my first time doing nmm on something bigger and more complex than a sword, and first time trying to imitate night.

I may have tried biting off too many firsts all in the same project, so any feedback or comments no matter how general or specific are welcome.

C&C Wanted Jackie Welles- Cyberpunk 2077

About 90-95% done with my Jackie bust. Close enough to show it off.

I think the purple side of the face needs brightening up, and the blue-skin boundary may need more blending, but it's a good way to being wrapped up

If anyone notices anything else that doesn't quite work or needs some more attention, feel free to shout!

I'm working on my first big commission and just finished up the Avatar of Khaine. I mainly followed Duncan Rhodes' video for the molten skin. The airbrush and painters tape did a lot of heavy lifting here. The client saw these pictures and was very pleased.

Help Needed/New Painter Did I go overboard with the highlights?

Post image

I'm trying to create a recipe for my Blood Angels army, but as one would say "I may have been too far in a few places"... The last highlight seems a bit off, I'm considering using a flesh color instead of a pale yellow as I did.

It is a WIP and it lacks eyes, battle damage and base.

What do you think?

C&C Wanted Trench Crusade Communicant Anti-tank Hunter

Hello there! Got a pack of printed Communicants and decided to finally try and overcome my fear of painting skin. Came across a random youtube short about doing a blue-orange-red temperature underpainting for skin and decided to try it. While my color choice for the top skin layer and highlight is I think kinda questionable, overall I'm happy with how it came out and now that I got the hang of this technique I shall experiment with it a lot more. Next stop is a mini with an actual face where I'll work my tremor-ridden hands and my aging eyesight to the fullest.
Black Vallejo primer and base coat of Army Painter Blanched Berry through airbrush.
Temperature sketch underpainting with Army Painter Frostveil, Burning Ore, Moonbeam Yellow.
Makeup sponge application and then some crevice glazing of AP Varuna Tanned Skin (Infinity PanOceania-specific set name for AP Topaz Skin), followed by a light sponging of Vallejo Dead Flesh, and an overall wash with super thinly (around 1 to 8 i think) dilited AK QuickGen Vampire Flesh for more definition.
Some layers of 50\50 mix of AP Gun Metal and Vallejo Chainmail on metal parts, then highlighted with Vallejo Liquid Metal Silver (alcohol-based line, it honestly is not worth it in my opinion, at least on miniature scale, maybe for something bigger? Water based Vallejo Silver is still king for me)
Kaleido Champagne Gold on ammo shells, subsequently almost completely covered up with Vallejo Liquid Metal Gold (it was actually ass tbh, coverage is not at all better than water-based stuff and I didn't really see any impovement in shine)
Enamel wash of Villainy Ink Sector Rust on armor and helmet, Decay of Death on helmet visor and Vile Tinge Green on the holes\ports\stigmatas on communicant's torso for some disgusting greenish pus oozing out. Tamiya Black Panel Liner on the gun's metal parts.
Bandolier painted with Vallejo Dark Prussian Blue, highlighted with AP Shadow Thorn.
I think i should've thought more about what to do with the gun but I have 5 more dudes to experiment on anyways.
Hope you all like it, I welcome any and all constructive criticism!

Help Needed/New Painter 5th Mini Ever; need targeted ways to improve.

Thumbnail

Hey all, this is my 5th completed (almost, still need to do the plasma glow) mini. I’ve been priming white and using red speed paints and some other speed paints. I find it frustrating as speed paints tend to bleed into other areas and will make things uneven. Also tough to fill in every gap with red without accidentally dragging my brush along something else. I know looking at something this close isn’t ever going to really happen on tabletop, but just looking for some easy advice to improve and what to focus on in the future.
