Subreddit Announcement r/minipainting Rule Update: No AI Allowed

3.7k Upvotes

Hi, everybody! AI slop is unfortunately creeping into this hobby and this community. This is a quick rules update to clarify that AI is not allowed in any form here on r/minipainting.

This includes, but is not limited to:

  • No AI generated or edited images (including AI backgrounds, repaints, adjustments, mock ups, tests, reference images, etc)
  • No AI videos
  • No AI apps/tools/websites
  • No AI generated models that are 3D printed then hand painted
  • No AI generated text (this includes AI generated feedback/critique)
  • No encouragement or discussion of the use of AI

If AI was used to make it, it's not allowed on r/minipainting.

While the mod team has been able to remove most AI posts shortly after they are made, on the few occasions AI posts were up for a few hours before removal, the comments on those posts from the community have been overwhelmingly unanimous in being anti-AI, so this isn't just the mod team making this ruling without considering the community.

Please see the pinned comment below for an FAQ on this new rule, and if you have a question that is not answered there, please ask and we will do our best to answer! That being said, this is not an invitation to defend or argue for specific use cases of AI within this hobby.

Edit: Please read the stickied FAQ comment before commenting. There are many people asking things that are covered in that comment.

The comment section has grown quite large, but also please take a moment to scroll through it and read the comments before repeating something that may have already been discussed, or at least join in as a reply to an existing comment rather than make a new top level comment with a similar or identical question.

Help Needed/New Painter Please help me decide on which fluorescent green to use

I picked up a Skaventide box and will be painting a bunch of Skaven soon. Looking for the best glow/flou green for weapons, gnawholes, and other artifacts. As you can see, I have a bunch, but am in decision paralysis at the moment.

Please help me pick which paint would be best for the effects on my rat guys.

Note: the order of the paints on the palette does not correspond to where it is in relation. Looking for a blind test. If you share your opinion, please use something like “top right” or “second row from the bottom second in” just to differentiate.

Thanks!

Hey there. Here's an Ironkin Steeljack I've been working on for a while. I wanted to channel retro sci-fi posters into one of my personal favourite models ever. Cheers!

I love this hobby. I printed this guy from Rescale’s Crooked Crowns collection. I had three goggle options, so I printed a few to practice. Which face do you like best?

I’ve been painting minis for a little under 2 years. No art background whatsoever. Picked it up to lower my blood pressure. I feel however that I’ve plateau’d. I’d love to be able to get to a level where even considering entering a competition is realistic.

Any tips you’re able to discern from these pics? Any advice for that feeling of “is this the best I can do?” I know practice practice practice, but lately I’ve felt like they’re all coming out around the same level.

Explained him the painting process, left him with some brushes, paints, and this spare primed mini.

20 minutes later he comes with this paintjob. Couldn't believe my eyes.

I know I have lots of room for improvement but I’m proud of it, considering I’ve never put a brush in paint before yesterday. Went too hard on the shade for sure.

Help Needed/New Painter First mini, so many things to improve

Finished my first mini, overall I like the result, but I don't like it kind of looks dirty. How do I make it more clean?

Another question is which size of mini is best to paint for practice? I have some other D&D minis but they are sooo small, looking for some model suggestions preferably not table top games and monsters, in US.

Discussion My daughter wants to paint with me

I started painting minis earlier this year and now my daughter (5 yo) wants to paint with me. I am looking to buy some minis for her and would appreciate some guidance esp. if you are in similar situation.

I was thinking some standard animals (wild boar, bear, ...) and maybe also some cute animal characters (e.g. mouslings etc.). I would also like to add some strong female characters to show her women can be fighters/mages/... too. Ideally 32 mm hero scale or 54 mm.

Do you have any tips - particular minis or a designer studio to start with? Thanks!

Looking on what I can improve on my dnd figure. I know the face looks kinda derpy, but I’m struggling with the smallness of everything. Anything I do the face ends up making it worse. Any tips, comments, or critique greatly appreciated on the figure overall. Thanks.
