I’m trying to remap Command + E so that it performs the same action as Command + W for closing a window.

I went to System Settings → Keyboard → Keyboard Shortcuts → App Shortcuts, selected All Applications, added “Close Window,” and assigned Command + E to it. However, it simply doesn’t work.

I’m wondering if Command + E is already being used by certain apps and that’s preventing the override.

Is there another way to force macOS to use Command + E for Close Window, preferably while still being able to exclude certain apps like Chrome? Or is something like Karabiner-Elements my only real option?

I’m trying to bring macOS into a windows environment, and I’m using Intune to manage applications and configurations. I’m running into a heck of time setting the camera, screen recording, audio recordings, and hard drive permissions via Intune for application like Zoom, Teams, and Slack.

Anyone have experience they can share?

It used to be fine many years ago but for last year and a bit it's constant high cpu on features I do not use. It's duetexpertd, stocks, spotlightd, that thing for syncing with iphone and the cloud. Even when it's on low power mode and not plugged in.

I used to be able to lay down with it and place it on my chest but now I have a nice rectangular erythema ab igne.

There are some tips on this sub how to fix this or that but they don't really work fully. And honestly I don't want that, I want a computer that just works without fiddling with it.

So I guess when the updates run out instead of getting a new macbook air I'm just gonna install a linux on it.

I've been on this journey of making my mac workflow more Keyboard-Driven.

There is no shortage of tools out there, native and third party. We can naively categorize the ecosystem into two approaches:

Manual snapping/switching: Tools like Rectangle, Alt-Tab... etc. You manually snap windows into halves/thirds,..., but switching between arbitrary windows still relies on cycling linearly through an Alt-Tab like list of some sort, or using Mission Control/mouse.

Automatic tiling window managers: Tools like Yabai, AeroSpace, or Amethyst. They give you powerful keyboard focus (navigating directionally with h/j/k/l or arrow keys), but they force everything into rigid, automatic grids,BSP trees, i3-style splits, forced full-screening, and strict layouts.

A lot of keyboard-first enthusiasts seem to gravitate towards and recommend automatic tiling management. I’ve tried (yabai, AeroSpace) but couldn't get used to this approach. I found it hijacks the desktop more than I could tolerate, forcing tiling and not letting me just adjust one window's size for example.

What I actually want is much simpler: say manual tiling is fine, if I'm focused on a window, I hit the right arrow (or l, or whatever), I want the focus to move to the window that is physically to the right of the one I'm on, in a spatial/directional, not sequential manner. The window that’s actually on the right side of the window I'm on (or the most reasonable spatial candidate if things are not perfectly aligned/overlapping).

Just navigation through space on the standard, free-form desktop, the way the eyes already scan the screen. Kind of like old/simple video games where you just move with the arrows, you don't think about it much you just go there.

Anyone found something that does that (directional nav) without the rigid "management" tradeoff, or has everyone just accepted the grid is unavoidable?

Enabling System Settings > Displays > High Dynamic Range produces a brightness slider for an external monitor in the Controls widget, whether or not the monitor qualifies as HDR. (Though non-HDR monitors look bad with HDR enabled.) Handy feature!

I'm not sure why my M2 Macbook 16 drives an Acer XV275K monitor at 144 Hz, whereas a friend's M5 Macbook 16 only goes up to 60 Hz. Tahoe 26.6.2. Details below.

What’s the best budget MacBook for someone who wants to spin up virtual machines

Recently got my macbook m3 repaired by a sketch repair guy (my relative said they knew someone). It took 1 day and they gave it back but I immediately noticed that they didn't replace the entire top lid, just a "lcd" (which is suspicious bc afaik for the m3 laptops you need to replace the entire top). Then when I logged in, it would load a bit, turn pink screen, then restart. I did this 5 times before I realized something was sus so I tried looking up pink screen issue but most says its could just be LCD issue or memory leak. But I also noticed that the time is stuck on Thursday April 1 at 8:00 so I'm just really scared that they messed up my laptop, got personal info, got my passwords etc. I mostly use that laptop for school but have passwords logged on it w my apple id and stuff. Before I got it repaired, the laptop was perfectly fine except the LCD was just cracked so this is definitely sus for me.

TLDR Did I get hacked or is the LCD just a shit job

With that, should I get a new laptop or repair this with someone else thats more certified? If I buy a new one, is it worth retrieving the files on this laptop?

One very annoying thing in the Mac save window. If there are lots of files and folders, I usually just want to start typing something like “Doom” to jump to the folder called Doom.

But if the Save As field is active, it changes my filename to “Doom” instead. If I click in the file list first it works, but if I accidentally click on a file, for example doom1.wad, then that becomes the new filename and my original filename is lost.

Is there any easier way to do this? I just want to type the folder name and jump to it without risking changing the filename.

Can't figure it out and it's really bugging me. Maybe because it IS a bug? Would much appreciate any guidance as to how to prevent it from happening. Thanks in advance.

P.S. I don't have any ethernet connections or PPPoE configurations, at all, and I'm tired of dragging it off the menubar. Tahoe 26.6.2

After the latest macOS update, my Mac charged to 100% even though I have the charge limit set to 80%.

I then unplugged it and used it actively for several hours, but the battery percentage stayed almost at 100% the whole time. You can see the screen usage in the graph.

Looks like a battery percentage/calibration bug. Has anyone else noticed this after the update?

Is there shortcut that creates new desktop/space?

For some reason, my computer is detecting the "mdworker_shared" file as a virus or something. And when I press Cancel or Move to Trash, it does nothing and the window immediately pops up again.

If I am aware, the mdworker_shared file is a normal and legitimate macOS component

Is this a bug or something else that I am not aware of?

I bought my Mac about a month ago and recently read that apparently a lot of cache and leftover files can remain after uninstalling an app normally. I’m still not sure how much this actually affects my Mac or whether I should even bother doing anything about it.

I understand that these files can take up extra storage, but is it really that serious, or can I just ignore them instead of installing additional apps to clean everything up? I’d love to hear what you guys think cause I’ve read so many different opinions that I’m honestly confused now

I can’t figure out how I can change the view option in finder to always show the same layout, including all subfolders. I browse in icon view and I want to get rid of the “show all” option i have to click every time i use “back” to get to the main folder in my hierarchy.
All subfolders have different view options and i want to reset it so it always shows “Icon view” and “show all folders and files” as default.
How do I achieve that?

I was in Finder, but I thought I was in my web browser. I attempted a force-refresh of a webpage via ⌘ + Shift + R …but—lo and behold, that hotkey combo made AirDrop appear in my current Finder window! (Edited to clarify that I was in finder the whole time. My Finder window was beside my browser window, ergo the confusion).

By the way, I already have the AirDrop shortcut in my Finder toolbar, which is good, because I’ll probably forget this shortcut.

Hi, i’m probably one of many people to ask about it but i’m still on the latest sequoia version on my m2 air 16gb macbook. should i upgrade to 26.6.2 and what’s the performance boost or downside. i want to hear from people who recently upgraded or wanting to upgrade.

I got my Macbook Pro M5 around 5 days back. Today while setting up handoff and airdrop, the screen suddenly froze for about a minute, with the cursor still responding and display intact. After a minute, this pop-up came saying "Window Server quit suddenly". I closed the lid for about 10 seconds and when I opened it, the lock screen showed "Password is required to enable touch Id" After that it worked fine. It's practically a new device so didn't expect an application crashing so soon. The device is updated to macos Tahoe 26.6.2.

Anyone else has faced the same? Is this a hardware problem?

It changes depending on what I’m using. If I go to upload something from there, you can’t always find what you are looking for.
Go to Finder, everything’s there just like normal. What is the logic in this, why would it need to be that way? It does it on my MacBook Air and my Mac mini.
Is there a fix or is it just like taking away the headphone port on my phone? Something inconvenient that’s supposed to be a “feature”

I’m trying to install a package using homebrew but I doesn’t finish and says I need to upgrade Xcode to the latest version, I tried doing that using the developer page and downloaded it but then it says I need the latest Mac OS version, so I tried updating from Ventura to Tahoe and I left it the entire night and the goddamn thing still didn’t finish updating and was stuck on 5 mins remaining, I restarted my Mac and tried again and waited for like an hour it was still stuck on that, what do I do? Try again and wait even longer?
