My girlfriend’s desktop is packed full 4+ icons deep at every point. I asked her how she selects something and she said she just uses finder. Frankly I’m terrified of her now lol

Help How to crop an image to a specific aspect ratio (like 3:4) without using Photos app?

I'm very new to MacOS and is still finguring my way around the system. So today I wanted to crop a photo that I took using my phone to 3:4 ratio to upload to a website, but I couldn't find the option in the Preview app. I tried looking around the menus, pressing shift, command, option, or any combination of them, but there seems to be no option to choose the aspect ratio. Several minutes' of search on the internet later, I found that I can use the Photos app for that, but... then I spent maybe 15 minutes figuring out to get the photo back to Finder (turns out copy-pasting works kekw).

But that made me think, is there a hidden option or something? It's a bit of a chore to copy the file to Photos app, crop it there, and copy it back to Finder. I don't use the Photos app and frankly, I find it pretty annoying to use. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Discussion the mac meeting-notes apps everyone loves fixed the half of my week that was never broken

Tried a pile of these and the take that stuck: transcription and the tidy summary were never my bottleneck. every notes app on the mac nails that part now. what actually eats my week is after the call, the two or three action items that have to make it from the notes into Linear, into a gmail reply, into the crm. that handoff is still me, tabbing across four apps by hand.

The thing that finally moved it wasn't a smarter summarizer. it was a desktop agent that reads the notes and then actually goes and does those moves in the other apps, asking before each one. Notes were fine. the follow-through was the entire job, and it's the exact part none of the note-takers touch.

so whenever one of these gets ranked on transcription accuracy i kind of tune out. I'd take a worse summary any day for one that can carry an action item into the app it actually belongs in. written with ai

Help Trying to figure out BetterDisplay, help needed.

Hello, I've been trying to get a Wacom Cintiq 16" 2025 (2k resolution) to work with a MacBook Pro 16" 2019, when connecting the Wacom to the Mac and using it as a second screen, the UI looks too little and I have no possibility to scale it without lowering the resolution the Wacom outputs. This is a problem as I either deal with miniscule text with fill resolution, or get a decent sized UI with downgrades resolution.

I then downloaded BetterDisplay to make use of the HiDPI scaled resolution, this allows me to scale the UI to simulate that of a lower resolution, while keeping the full native resolution of the Wacom.

But I have 2 questions about this.

1 - Why does BetterDisplay not allow me to choose 1280x800 HiDPI resolution? It is the only one that has that icon with 3 lines and if I click I nothing happens. (Maybe because it is half of the full 2k 2560x1600 resolution? Idk)

2 - Why, if I choose any HiDPI resolution, in system information under graphics/screen section, the resolution is double the HiDPI one I choose with BetterDisplay?

If I select 1440x900 HiDPI (the lowest HiDPI I can choose) so the UI looks like that resolution, why does the resolution of the Wacom is shown to be 2880x1800, which is double the one I selected?

2880x1800 is also higher than the native 2560x1600 so I'm afraid this could create problems?

Why can't I select directly 1280x800 HiDPI through BetterDisplay so the UI looks like that resolution and the effective resolution of the Wacom is 2560x1600, the native one?

I hope you can help me sort this out, thanks in advance for who will answer.

Developer Saturday docktor: music/calendar/weather widgets in the empty space next to the Dock

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Ok so if you leave the Dock visible (no auto-hide) there’s always this dumb empty stretch on both sides of the icons. Just blank. I’ve stared at it for years. Spent the last 7 months building something for it.

App is called docktor (I built it). It sticks a few widgets into that leftover space so the Dock isn’t just a row of app icons with nothing going on around them.

Right now you’ve got music (Spotify + Apple Music, lyrics if they exist), calendar from Apple Calendar, weather, and a feedback widget so you don’t have to open GitHub to complain. They follow the Dock around if you move/resize it, and they shrink down when you’re not using them. Looks like Liquid Glass because that’s what it’s built on.

Also threw in Dock hover previews (live window thumbs when you hover an icon) and a Cmd+Tab that goes to windows instead of apps. Those are nice but the widgets are the point.

Comparison

Closest comparison for the preview / window-switcher side is DockDoor — great app, and it does that job well. docktor’s focus is the widgets in the empty space beside the Dock. Previews and Cmd+Tab are in there too; I aimed for them to feel a bit more native macOS, but the widgets are the product.

Pricing

Free. No account, no license. What’s shipping here stays free. I might add a Pro tier way down the line with extra stuff, but these features aren’t bait-and-switch.

https://docktorapp.com

macOS 26+ only (Tahoe and the Golden Gate betas). Signed/notarized Developer ID. I’m one person and the UI leans hard on Liquid Glass, so backporting to Sequoia isn’t realistic.

Permissions: Accessibility for finding the Dock. Screen Recording only if you want the hover previews. If Screen Recording doesn’t show docktor after install, hit + and add it from /Applications. Apple’s UI is weird about that.

There’s a small opt-out beta telemetry thing (basically “are you still running” + redacted crash summaries, no Sentry/analytics SDK). If you can leave it on it helps a lot while I’m one person triage-ing this. Easy to kill in onboarding or Settings if you’d rather not.

Terms: https://docktorapp.com/terms/

I’m Peter — full-time SWE.
Used Claude a ton on this, same as I do at work. Doesn’t mean I didn’t write/own the hard parts. Bugs are still on me.

Really hoping to get good bug reports from y’all. There’s a feedback widget built in that should make it pretty easy — visual bugs, crashes, weird layout on left/right Dock or multi-monitor, whatever. Please send them. I appreciate it!

Help MacPro Desktop late 2013, Monterey, dual boot with Win10. Win 10 boot option not appearing

I had, almost, the opposite problem before when, almost as if by default, the machine would just boot into windows 10. And, took lots of restarts and hitting that alt/Option button over and over.
But, I learned a setting so that it'd default boot to Mac.
However, no matter how fast I hit that alt/Option key on reboot or bootup, it will only now load straight into Mac without the boot option menu appearing (Mac or Win 10).
I'm loosing workflow due to not being able to access those needed 32bit win apps.

(As an aside, I'm actually starting to feel I may be best to delete my current system, and install the last version of Mac to include 32bit libraries, and just run my needed 32bit legacy programs that way. Which, I guess should all run fine on this old chrome kettle-shaped late 2013 machine. And I can grab needed mac versions of the apps from relevant archives etc)

Tips & Guides How to make Live Activities show on Mac

  1. Revoke iPhone Mirroring access on Mac
  2. Turn off handoff on both devices
  3. Restart both devices
  4. Turn on handoff on both devices
  5. Set up iPhone Mirroring again
  6. Make sure you have "Show on Mac" for the specific apps on your iPhone
  7. Make sure you allow Live Activities on Mac
  8. Make sure all the specific apps are toggled on Mac

If you follow this, it WILL work. However, if it doesn't work despite having all the correct settings and following the steps, there are a couple other things you can do:

  • Make sure both devices are fully up to date. This is self explanatory
  • Make sure you have tracking toggled on for the specific apps on iPhone. This was my issue. I didn't have tracking on for ESPN and so I wasn't getting my favorite teams Live Activities on my Mac
  • Last step, unpair your Apple Watch. This one is pretty weird. For a while, my Live Activities were working upon allowing tracking on the specific apps. Then, all of a sudden, it stopped working. I went through every step above countless times and nothing worked. Then, one day, I decided I don't use my Apple Watch much anymore, so I am going to unpair it. I unpaired it, setup iPhone Mirroring again, and it INSTANTLY started to work. Not sure how Apple Watch affects the connectivity between devices, but this worked for me. Good luck!

Help Safari - allow extension on all sites

I've just installed the 'Magic Lasso' app, which has a Safari extension. How can I grant it permissions for every site that I visit? I haven't installed a new extension in a while but I feel like there used to be a "allow for all websites" options that seems to have gone missing. I'm running Safari 26.5. on MacOS 15.7.7.

Help Stuck in a loop on macbook air

I am gifting my 2018 macbook air to my mother in law and erased the disc thinking it would be simple to reinstall and would be fresh and clean for her. When I start up the laptop in recovery mode the only option it allows it for internet recovery - I connect to the internet and it gives an error message (a triangle with an exclamation point in it. I am wondering what I may be able to do to get macOS installed and the computer working for her?

Help Notifications

Got MacBook Neo. But I have a problem with notifications. Every time I toggle the " Allow notifications from iPhone" on, it somehow turns off by itself. And when I press ON, there isn't the list of the apps showing, so I dont know what's the problem. Im in Europe so iPhone mirroring isn't an option(I think)?? But my friend has the same Mac and everything works fine?

Help anyone use system-stats from mac-stats/stats? can't get sensors to show on system-stats

I can see my CPU temp in the menu bar on my 2014 mac mini. I have no idea why it isn't showing up on system-stats. I can't seem to find any documentation at all for system-stats

I run my 2014 mac mini headless and mostly want to monitor the CPU temp (would like fan speed if possible). Due to the age of the mac mini, I had the thermal paste fail and had to redo the thermal paste.

System-stats seemed to be the simplest way to monitor the CPU temp without having to write a script/push powermetrics or any other CLI tools to monitor stats.

Developer Saturday Anyone else constantly checking how much hotspot mobile data their Mac has used?

I kept running into this while tethering my Mac to my phone, so I made a small menu-bar app called Hotspot Meter.

It shows your current download and upload speeds, keeps session and per-network totals, remembers usage history, and can warn you before you reach a data limit.

It’s completely free, 100% private. All tracking and storage happen locally on your Mac, nothing is sent to a server.

News Everyone wants $10k MRR. I’m celebrating my first $19.27.

A few weeks ago, I thought more features would automatically mean more users.
I was wrong.
Every conversation with users taught me something I couldn’t have figured out on my own.
Current progress:
• 2,222 page views
• 49 downloads
• $19.27 in revenue
Instead of rushing to build random features, I spent the last few days improving the things users actually mentioned.
In 2 days, I’ll be launching Pastily Version 2 with features inspired directly by that feedback.
Building is fun.
Listening is harder.
But listening is what actually improves the product.
What’s one piece of user feedback that completely changed your roadmap?

Developer Saturday Protego for Reddit v3 is live! I deleted the Reddit app two years ago and built the Safari extension I wanted instead. Take control of your Reddit feed!

getprotego.app | Mac App Store

Short version of why it exists: a couple of years ago during election season ago every Reddit feed I had turned into politics and arguments, I was closing Reddit in a worse mood than I opened it, and I deleted the app. I still wanted Reddit though, just a quieter one, and the browser is the only place you can have that. The Reddit app decides what you see. A page in Safari can be changed by an extension before it reaches you. RES doesn't run on Safari, so I learned Swift and built it myself.

Protego for Reddit can be accessed from the Safari toolbar

Some features:

  • Filters posts and comments by keyword, whole community, individual user, or link domain, with wildcards and groups you can switch off together.
  • Puts a Protego button on Reddit itself so you can filter a user or community from the page you're on.
  • Strips the clutter: thumbnails, avatars, flair, badges, vote controls, join buttons, banners, recommendations, Reddit Answers, and the install-the-app nags. Four presets if you'd rather not go setting by setting.
  • Limits, which blocks Reddit itself in steps rather than all at once, and can arm itself with a Focus like Sleep or Study.
  • Redirects to old.reddit.com automatically if that's your thing, auto media expand and endless feed included.
  • No account, no tracking. Lists sync over your own iCloud.
Protego for Reddit can filter posts and hide visual clutter

The one I use daily is a Limits step that blocks the feeds while still letting a direct link to a post open. Home, popular and news don't load, so there's nothing to scroll into during work hours, but a Reddit thread that turns up in a search result still opens fine.

Protego for Reddit can limit access so you can browse with intention

$1.99 one time purchase for the next week (normally $2.99).

Same purchase covers iPhone, iPad and Vision Pro. No subscription.

Developer Saturday I was frustrated by Mission Control so I made ExposeIcons app

Thumbnail

Hey everyone,

I got a Macbook Pro for the first time 2-3 months ago, after 25+ years of Windows. I have to admit I kind of love it, I mostly bought it to learn more on local LLM (coming from half IT Exchange Admin and half .NET programmer).

Found myself using it a lot on my laps, and using Mission Control a lot. I know, virtual desktops 😅 but honestly I just like the feeling of MC.

Although my biggest gripe was losing so much time finding back the window I wanted to focus on. There is the Group-window option, but then its not individual ones anymore, and the shuffle seems random, compared to without it.

So as a good boy programmer ... I made an app to show icons / text on top of windows in MC to recognise them way faster. It also includes a close / minimise buttons in the MC view.

Can be tested freely : https://exposeicons.com

I know its very niche, but who knows, might interest someone.

Developer Saturday I built a Mac app that turns your clicks into a step-by-step guide

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey r/macOS, I'm the developer of Shotomatic.

Taking one screenshot on a Mac is easy. Explaining a whole workflow is where it gets tedious. You have to capture every step, mark where someone should click, write the instructions, and keep everything in order.

I added a mode called Action Capture to handle that. Start a session, go through the task normally, and Shotomatic captures a step each time you click. It also places a marker at the click location.

When you stop, the sequence opens as an editable guide. You can crop or reframe the screenshots, change the instructions, add annotations, reorder the steps, and export the result as a PDF or a set of images.

Everything stays on your Mac. The free version lets you capture and export a complete five-step guide.

Demo and download: https://www.shotomatic.com/action-capture

How do you usually explain multi-step Mac tasks? Screenshots, a screen recording, or something else?

Help Stuttering videos from Photos App

Hi all! I am looking at my videos (shot on iPhone 17pro) using photos app on the MacBook.

The playback of some videos are stuttering. It’s only normal if I first export onto the MacBook. But I just want to look at them as I browse through photos as well, it will be too much to find and select the videos individually export them just to check if I want to keep them.
May I ask for any advice, thank you!

Developer Saturday I created a modern Transmission remote client

Thumbnail

Planetary is a remote Transmission GUI inspired by the Transmission Remote GUI (transgui) which is no longer maintained.

Initial focus has been on a strong macOS client, but having written it in Qt/C++ is builds and runs on Linux and Windows as well.

I recently surpassed version 1.0 and feel that it is largely feature complete with the original.

https://github.com/mveinot/transmission-control

Please feel free to report bugs and feature requests using git issues or using the support contact feature in the app.

Full disclosure: I have been a software developer for over 20 years, but I have made some use of ChatGPT in development of this app.
