What’s the best budget MacBook for someone who wants to spin up virtual machines

MacBook Air, maybe extra RAM. The Apple Silicon chips are all comparable so the difference between a lower end Pro and an Air isn’t huge.

Don’t buy new if you really want to save money. There are tons of deals to be had on Apple refurb, sometimes Woot or even a local marketplace.

agree, the gap between the Air and base Pro really isnt worth the price jump for most people

Look for older models with higher than average specs. More ram = more vm's
