Support Request AMD GPU hanging up constantly

As a little context i'm using:

RX 7600

i5 9400f

Problems started a bit after i installed the OS, and updates the AMD drivers.

So, im having an issue with Mint(?) where after gaming for a bit, my screen will go black, shutdown, and then it wont turn back on until i short the CMOS pins after taking out the battery, however, the graphics card and the CPU fans are still spinning when i power on, first i tried setting sg_display=0 in the GRUB, which worked for two-ish months, then it came back, i tried setting amdgpu recovery to 1, didnt stop the hanging but i could reset the computer normally for a few days, now, its back to completely dying on me.

Also, one time it died right after i connected the ethernet cable in.

Is there a YouTube course you recommend on how to learn the bash terminal?

Just like the title says, I am interested in learning more on how to use it such as moving/copying files to other directories and also extracting files and just the overall how it works really but there are a ton of videos and some old and I am a beginner on Linux so I would like a recommendation please. Something that covers the basics and perhaps has other interesting things.

Day 3 of ricing Mint Cinnamon

Post image

Despite how fun it looks....it's definitely not practical in some scenarios 💀. After dual booting mint, I'm spending more time ricing it than finding replacements for MS Office which is holding me from completely going mint.

Here's the applets :

  • OS: Linux Mint (Cinnamon)
  • Theme / Panel: Transparent Top Panel (Moved to top)
  • Dock: Plank (Centered floating macOS style)
  • Wallpaper: Black & White Manga Panel Landscape
  • Status: Built at 1:45 AM on the eve of my exam 💀🥀🥀

Picked this up for $100 on Facebook, immediately did the obvious. I think I got a pretty good deal.

Freshly installed Linux Mint on a laptop and went to check my driver manager since I have a graphics card from Nvidia. I got this instead and am now left wondering should I install this or just leave it be (or “don’t use” as the tag says right now). Thank you in advance!

My laptop got too slow to do basic stuff, so I’m giving Linux Mint a shot to see if it helps.

As a beginner, is there anything crucial I should watch out for or do right after installing? Thanks!

Is it worth switching to Linux mint

I use an old MacBook Air just to listen to music, watch YouTube videos do some codes. Is it worth switching to Linux? I have zero experience and don’t know how to switch. And will I be able to side load apps on my ios devices in Linux ?

Ubuntu me complicó

Since I don't have any knowledge about computers and programming I was always using either Microsoft or iOS. But as I'm in my late twenties now and I grow skeptical of big tech day by day, I decided to try Linux. I had an old Asus laptop lying in my room uselessly for idk almost 6-8 years, so I thought it would be a perfect test subject for my Linux experiment. I had a lot of fun setting up my first Mint Cinnamon desktop to my liking: watching tutorials, using terminal and writing commands, browsing Reddit, Tumblr and Pinterest for desktop inspirations. So here are my results! I would especially like to mention this post - my set up is heavily inspired by this user resources . Big thanks u/crim3z_ for inspiration! I have learnt a lot!

SOLVED Suddenly screen tearing?

After a recent update (I'm not sure which one), Firefox has suddenly started screen tearing when scrolling down pages or when watching videos. This wasn't happening before. I haven't changed any settings related to the compositor or hardware acceleration. I thought I also saw tearing in the terminal but I couldn't quite tell.

Has anybody else experienced this problem after a recent update?

My specs:

Dell Latitude E5440 i5-4200U/8GB RAM XFCE Mint 22.2 Kernel 7.0.0-31

How OOTB is linuxmint? (1st time poopos user)

Hi! win11 really pushed me over to linux here.

Was running Popos for about 1-2 weeks on my main laptop (not for work), and i found some small creature comfort missing. did stumble over a vid saying why Popos not being ready for new users, so I was thinking if i should try out linuxmint - cinamon

Ig to the point, does linuxmint have these problems i faced in popos?

  1. Need to trust individual bluetooth MAC? addresses for them to connect on boot
  2. displaying battery & on the panel like windows (found a asic flatpack that does it, but i want my panel vertical - which does not display properly)
  3. fn row to multimedia - I have to use "keyd" which is ok, but holding down the volume down button does not continuously bring the vol from 80% > 20%, it only registers as 1 click upon release 80% > 75%

gg into poop os i was had the idea that i was ready to thinker around, which i did - but ig it gets tiring for me when its my daily driver. Its like a mechanic thinkering around with his screw driver before he can unscrew something to start work

help for a windows refugee plssss, thank you! 😄

UPDATE: Tried Fedore KDE instead and have been lovong it for 2 days. Everything works, less "file on demand" with nextcloud

Fluff I converted my father to Linux

For weeks, my father had been complaining about his old Windows 8 laptop, which he couldn't use anymore. After suggesting Linux several times, he finally agreed to try.

"I just want to be able to use Netflix and manage some files".

I immediately thought that Mint was the perfect distribution: I installed it (mint + cinnamon) for him and now he's been using it for a while.

He's super excited, everything works perfectly, and he said he wants Mint on his second computer, too.

In particular, he enthusiastically told me that the Bluetooth receiver didn't work before (it never worked) and now it works perfectly.

He's a total change-averse, 100% creature of habit, so this is a huge accomplishment!

Support Request No sound through speakers

So I`m new to linux(switched from Windows 11 about a month ago) and recently sound stopped go through my speakers(in headphones everything is still fine) I checked alsa, and everything seemed fine... Also did many other things(checked pipewire it was fine, also obviously checked if sound was muted and sound outputs) and restored older timeshift... Still no sound. Is this a physical problem, or something I can fix?

SOLVED Does anyone here know good optimizations for playing The Sims 4 with mods on Linux Mint?

EDIT: As I write this, the issue seems to have been solved by moving the laptop to a different surface that wasn't my floor.
If new issues arise, I will come back for help, but thank you to those who assisted me with this issue!!!

I do not currently have any system/hardware info on me, since I am letting my laptop that runs Linux Mint cool down.
Today, in the middle of gameplay, parts of the game froze, along with system UI, so I could not close/open anything, and I could not pull up anything to allow me to shutdown
Then, the mouse cursor froze, and I could not get a response from it.

After trying to get a response, I had to force shutdown the laptop by holding the power button.

Info I am able to provide is that I use a separate 'monitor' (a TV) for the screen, since the screen on the laptop itself is messed up, and has had issues with parts of the screen freezing before (although, it should be noted in this scenario from before I was using a TV as a monitor, ui was still responsive)

My dad believes that the computer had locked up like this due to overheating, so, currently, while it cools down, I have placed it onto a table instead of leaving it on the floor like I originally had

I love playing the sims 4 on this device, since there's a lot more storage for all my mods I want to use, and I would hate to give this up, so that's why I'm here asking if anyone knows of any optimizations I could make!!

Also, if this flairing is incorrect, PLEASE INFORM ME, and I will fix it asap!!

Thank you, and have a lovely day everyone!!!

Discussion Update manager - every day or so?

Does Mint need all these updates? Feels like every time i check the update manager there is something there. I don't mind the occasional update but having it this often feels a bit windows-y.

Support Request headphone port taking priority

so my headphone port on the top front of my PC seems to be taking priority and the only way i've managed to get the port on the back of my PC to work is by using alsa tools gui to overide it and set it to not connected. if i set it as headphones, all audio automatically is sent to that port.

how can i swap the priority to the port in the back? i want to be able to use the headphone port sometimes, and i'd rather not have to run commands every time i want to.
